Next year
Defense: Addition by subtraction on D as Edvinsson and Johansson are improvements over Holl and Petry.
Forwards:
Larkin and Raymond continue to develop and Berggren has 20+ goal potential. Offense wasn’t really the problem this year.
Goalies:
I’d love to add a legit #1 but they’re aren’t any available in free agency and I don’t see Yzerman trading high picks just yet. Run it back with Lyon and a healthy Husso and maybe Cossa is ready to come up at some point and take the job.
13M in cap space would become available in the summer of 2025 with at least some of Cossa, Wallinder, Mazur, Kasper, Danielson, ASP, Soderblom… ready to come up.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NoVaSpartan</b></div><div>Crazy underpays for both players. Oilers would get far better offers than a 1st and spare parts, and Nashville would get far better offers than a 2nd rounder and a downgrade in net.</div></div>

Value is probably low, though a 1st is a good start. Oilers need depth in a bad way and this would give them 2/3 of a really good middle 6 line and a reliable D-man, a position they desperately need. They likely get better offers but this makes the Oilers a tougher team to play against.

I agree the value is low but 1) I’m not sure how much leverage Nashville has with teams knowing Askarov is coming and Saros only a 1 year least after this season. 2) Goalies don’t usually net great returns. Personally, I rank Johansson as Detroit’s 2nd best D prospect(behind Edvinsson).

I get it and i have my own concerns about him, but Yzerman seems to believe he’s recovered and ready to go. At least according to his press conference.

I wonder if there is a deal the Habs can do to get him though. Maybe a deal involving Harris and a future prospect like Mesar or Farrell. Someone who definitely has an NHL future.
What do you all think. What is a deal that is an overpayment today but is not completely a fire-able offense for a GM if he doesn't work out (you all know he's a risk).</div></div>

With his combination of size and skill, I doubt Detroit trades him. But IF they did I’d imagine it’d be a package of Soderblom and picks for a top line guy.
Soderblom definitely has the opportunity to earn a top 6 spot but i see him settling in on the 3rd line(maybe 2nd) in a couple of years while getting PP1 time.

People MASSIVELY overreact to his contract and act like it was 8x10. Realistically, it should have been 1m less per and 1 year less. Is it ideal? No, not by any means, but it's fine.
He still adds some badly needed heaviness on the back end, can skate well and has some sneaky offensive ability. He just needs to be insulated by a stay at home partner, that can read when he goes roaming. After the deadline last season when he was paired with Maata, he was pretty good actually and that was when he was flipped around to his off hand.
Don't get me wrong. I'd like him replaced, but not at the cost of paying to move him. It just doesn't make any sense.</div></div>
Personally, I like the idea of a Chiarot-Holl 3rd pair

Toronto media/fans always overhype or over hate a player. Holl is probably paid too much but with the cap going up next year it doesn’t really hurt Detroit. But if Detroit plays him in the bottom 6 he is a good option. If he’s playing top D pair minutes, then he gets exposed. I see the D pairings as:
Walman-Seider
Maatta-Gostisbehere
Chiarot-Holl

Just because Soderblom isn’t penciled into the opening night lineup doesn’t mean the Wings don’t have big plans for him. He likely spends this year in GR and gets some injury call up or post TDL NHL time, then next year is on the roster full time with Perron and Sprong being free agents after this season. The only way I see Detroit trading him is in a package for a top line player with term.

It would be funny. But IDK if Kane is the best presence to have in the locker room with so many young guys. Great player but I’ve always thought he had an attitude issue.

Didn’t think we’d get Kasper or Edvinsson (anyone suggesting Seider or Raymond is ridiculous). All in all, not great, not terrible just kind of a meh return. If Ottawa can sign Tarasenko or Tatar now I’d feel better heading into next year!</div></div>
Agreed that most Sens fans didn’t say it would be Seider or Raymond, but those few were annoying(kind of how this post is annoying so apologies there).

You’re going to get Pennie’s regardless. If you keep him until the TDL and the team you trade him to knows he won’t resign with them, you’re not going to get a big offer. Or you keep him for the season, miss the playoffs by 3 points and lose him for nothing.
