2020 offseason
I probably like mid round picks more than the next guy, but now wing goes from our deepest position to our weakest. If we trade a winger it should be for a Dman. Trading 3 wingers for 1 and picks doesn't represent the competitive position the leafs are in.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>You're right Seattle is going to have choice of few equally valued players. Why protect one by sending assets when Seattle is just going to draft another one. I remember the angst shown by Leafs fans for the Vegas draft. The fear of losing either Leivo or Leispiec. Pretty sure you guys are on the same side. Leafs probably wont have to lose one of those guys anyway. itll look something like
7 Forwards: Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander, Kerfoot, Johnsson, Kapanen
3 D: Rielly, Dermott, signee?
G: ??
so more likely we lose one of hyman or engvall (pending a trade)

Vatanen
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>But isn't that rub. If Vatanen is THAT good, the Devils get a good return in trade from another rfor him and his expiring contract The Leafs would have match that and then add even more for the difference Ceci' contract. So now the Leafs are really overpaying for an expiring contract, and questionable how much better than are with Vatanan...who now how to learn the Leafs than Ceci.
Why pick on Ceci? He hasn't been the Leafs worse Dman this season.</div></div>
Not sure Vatanen is a stay at home dman (as mentioned in the posts description) but I think he could work well in this new leafs system. I'd even be interested in resigning him if it were around 4 mil.
Ceci has without a doubt been the leafs worst Dman of the 6 regulars. I think your explanation makes it seem as if every team is trying to get Vatanen. how many teams are interested in a rental RHD and have cap space? out of those, how many think Vatanen is their guy? so yeah maybe the leafs have to out-bit a team or 2 for NJ to take Ceci.

Lol i guess my fingers got a little trigger happy. Khudobin is a very good backup, but still trading 3 old ufas for young talent would be a good move.
if your concern is for dallas' goalie situation is that serious, maybe its just not a good trade for either team

Bracco and the pick, IMO are NHL meaningless. As Leafs I wouldn't want to get into a Nurse RFA contract negotiation seeing the past record of Dubas and friends. Cap certainty with Kapanen and Liljegren might be more prudent and the Leafs think Liljegren is the real deal.
Vatanen for five years....rather not. Woll isn't NHL ready next year.</div></div>

Trade For Marner
Theres a reason they say the team who gets the best player wins the trade. not to paint marner as a god or discredit any of murray, schultz or a 1st, but sometimes the value of the package isn't the sum of all the parts. This is a trade a rebuilding team makes.

Unless the Leafs go big game hunting on a Barrie or Pietrangelo, Holl and Liljegren should be a bottom pairing battle. More of a reason they shouldnt sign the former. Also DeMelo shouldn't be your best RHD

Apparently he declined a pietrangelo for Nylander trade before willy was signed, so I don’t think this is a crazy statement. Dumba is younger and a great offensive threat, but he hasn’t had the greatest defensive numbers on a good defensive team.

They spent a 2nd and 5th on Miller. Maybe if Buffalo is willing to trade him, they'd be happy getting their money back.
At the end of the day, Toronto could have done that trade this summer (with Vegas) but didn't. So its unlikely

I think Dubas could have done a similar deal (with Kapanen) by now. Don't think they will trade him.
Maybe Colin Miller is the guy to try and get from Buffalo. would surely cost less
