Kakko injury
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jimbo1119</b></div><div>Question I have is if Kakko goes LTIR...do they even need OTT to retain salary?
NYR Cap situation pretty confusing- Fox getting back off LTIR...maybe KK goes to LTIR...Chytil on IR- maybe LTIR retroactively?</div></div>
From my understanding....
Kakko just placed on LTIR and is expected to be gone "long term" but not for the entire season. So once he gets back, his 2.1m resumes and we lose that extra space. Just like when Fox is back tmrw, we are going to lose his extra 9.5m that we had when he was out. Chytil is also placed on LTIR now (but is eligible to come back whenever, since he was hurt the same day Fox was and the LTIR is back-dated to then) so until he comes back, we have his 4.4m as well in addition to Kakko's.
However, imo, if Kakko is only going to be 100% as of March 30th (or something similarly that close to playoffs), just keep him out and on LTIR until the playoffs actually start, because you don't have to be compliant in the playoffs (like Vegas and Tampa)
With Senko specifically.... he's at 5m right now so the Rangers would have to clear at least 2.9m of cap space in other areas IF Kakko is going to be back before playoffs (probably by trading someone else like Goodrow). But if Ottawa retains 50% they only have to clear like 400k in space which might be easier

I get he shows up more in the playoffs, but we need more consistency in the regular season too. He just seems lost to me out there, and for most of the games was playing first line minutes. Even his goal against Dallas the other night was a lucky goal - got swiped in by the defender. I just feel like he's not going to work in NY, as much as I like him, he doesn't contribute a lot on the ice at the moment. What would you see as a realistic scenery change trade for Kakko?</div></div>
Kakko is imo elite defensively and had 40 points last year. He's not going to live up to 2nd OA but he's still a very useful middle 6 guy

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jimbo1119</b></div><div>If Drury trades Kakko for a rental he wont be long for NYR.
Kakko does a lot of things well that do not show up on the scoresheet- yet the good teams (those with a realistic shot of going deep) really crave. For now- Kakko will work with Muse and the rest of the coaching staff, and we'll see what happens once Chytil returns.
If NYR decide to move on from Kakko, examples of players to target would include Morgan Frost, Shane Pinto, and Shane Wright. Who knows what the trade package would look like- with additional picks, prospects, and/or depth players included on either side of any deal. But a rental? Absolutely not!</div></div>
Exactly this. Kakko is an elite defensive forward, plays below the hashes really well and his lines absolutely dominate puck posesssion. He has 3 points because he played with an absolutely snakebitten mika and Kreider. They couldn't score at 5v5 at all. Kakko was feeding them prime chances. He's now playing with Cuylle and Bonino, and Bonino is terrible offensively. Chytil comes back it'll fix the 3rd line and likely generates far more offense.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jimbo1119</b></div><div>I guess Wheeler can be given a shot....just don't see him with anywhere near the speed he'll need to play with the required pace, and get back on D (as required of centers). Sure Brodz played 4th line...but given the circumstances, I think he'd be the best fit at 3C- to bring speed and tenacity there which (hopefully) gives Cuylle a chance to produce, and gets Kakko going.
As for Gourde...definitely the type style player worth targeting- if Seattle is willing to trade on a reasonable deal. The problem is the elevated cost due to the retention and/or inclusion of Goodrow in a deal like this. At least he is signed beyond this year. Rentals are the guys I'd look to stay away from. Type of player I would most like to target would be Morgan Frost. Because retention wouldn't be an issue, the cost to acquire might be in same range-maybe even cheaper. Yet for the assets expended, NYR would have another player they could build longer term on.</div></div>
Yeah Frost would be another solid option to consider. In an ideal world Chytil gets and stays healthy, but if not then we should definitely consider exploring our options.

A shakeup
I'll gladly answer with another name no one has mentioned: Dylan Garand.
As said here, as long as Benoit Allaire is in the employ of the Rangers, I'll never worry about goaltending. Garand is the quietest 3-1-1 in the organization, who is 21 years old. He has something each of the seven current goalies in the organization (save one, Jon Quick) doesn't have: championship experience. Garand also has an entry-level contract with term left beyond this season; meaning, you get Quickie's and Louie's replacement for very nearly the same amount (something you have as leverage in a trade, not needing a first for giving up Igor, an elite goalie).
On the flip side, why Draisitil? Because <strong>YOU ARE</strong> giving up an elite goalie and (when healthy) a top 10 player in the world, for another.
Why else? Artemi Panarin, who is playing like the franchise left winger he's paid to be, along with Alexis Lafreniere, who is finally coming into his own. This deal grabs a true number one center to pivot between them, who is one of the purest goal scorers in the league and in its history.
Drury and Holland are giving neither chump change; each gives each other both the short-term and long-term fixes, at the exact same ages (27), that permits each team to balance both of the cap and the players needed to go forward.
Edmonton needs a stabilizing force in net, that breaks down the noticable lapses and puts the team in better shape to win. New York needs a high-caliber center that finishes scoring chances, as well as letting Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider transition to the latter levels of their careers.
The whole center position deepens for the Rangers over the next few seasons, while the Oilers settle the goaltending for the present and foreseeable future.
Win-win.

A shakeup
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jimbo1119</b></div><div>For most NYR fans the thought of trading Igor is sacrilegious. I actually wouldn't be against moving him- but in the right deal. The main reason to trade him would be to get back serious value, while avoiding his next contract. Thing is though, they'd have probably a bigger problem (contract wise) in extending Drais- who goes UFA the same year as Igor. Drais does solve NYR C depth concerns for years to come (assuming they do extend him). But I don't look forward to the 7 or 8 year deal he'll inevitably start at essentially 30 years old. So I'd pass on this deal. If I'm moving Igor I'd want back a C, max 25 yo, with top line upside.</div></div>
You actually put the right reasons for why to move him for this particular one, Draisitil. If Igor was moved [for instance] for Petterson, it's double the price to acquire, plus a contract extension immediately ranging just over Matthews'. In this deal, Draisitil has two years, which in preparation for the two years of cap elevation leaves the window open with Panarin, while the growth of The Kids, Schneider, Cuylle and the eventual ascension of Othmann and Garand will begin to impact the future cap. Drury and company are spared a ballooned cap hit on one player; instead, several will share the pie and a full team can be nurtured.
At the expense of the few, the team grows full components and a winning culture.

Moving Kakko

I mean its easy to say "come on guys, shoot the puck"...but its another thing to either take high % shots, or for guys to get open in the midst of the defensive chaos (during the cycling) to be able to take high % shots. Neither of these seem to be happening- and I don't think its the case of a player (or players) playing poorly- but more so a function of the unit on the ice continuing to gain cohesion as well as each examining footage after the game to determine where they can improve positioning. Takes patience.</div></div>
Well Panarin finally has a shoot first mentality and it’s paying off
For the first line, Kreider has always been net front so I don’t expect him to shoot. Kakko and Mika need to start letting the pucks fly. Puck possession means nothing if you’re not shooting or creating chances

I just want to see Kakko get going. It’s a bit depressing seem him not stand out while Laffy has been looking good with Panarin

For all you Wheeler haters
I was happy when they signed Wheeler because his contract is cheap and he fits a need at RW. However, watching him play 9 games so far, he does look rather old and slow in a game that is getting younger and faster every year. With that said, 9 games is not a big enough sample size to judge the man, but he does need to start chipping in sooner rather than later. He has been a great player for a lot of years so I am rooting for him to succeed, but if he doesn't pick it up by mid season, it may be time for Othmann to be called up, because a line of Cuylee/Trocheck/Othmann seems pretty good.

Canes fans when asked to give up anything of value.
You're getting a 90 point 2 way C at a CHEAPER cap hit than KK, who btw is -3 and has already taken 4 minor penalties.

What the penguins NEED TO DO

But he has underwhelmed for a 1OA. For now I want LaF in the lineup over Cuylle and Othmann. LaF needs a long look under Lav in whatever role Lav has for him. Then mid season to TDL NYR can assess their options with LaF going forward. Any decision regarding Cuylle or Othmann is independent of any decision involving LaF. And don't want to rush either to the NHL.</div></div>
Two things,
If Laf at his lowest is a 3rd line, I agree...but...his height may be a decent 2LW? Maybe? He hasn't really shown that either. While it is true the Rangers are under no rush to trade him, so they should take top dollar, there is the other side of the trade.
PIT's 2026 pick could be AWESOME, let alone if it was lottery protected as it won't get any better.
PIT is built on old legs of amazing players...but in two more years those wheels are falling off. PIT got Karlsson for maybe the next two years of the team being good, but 38 year old Crosby by then? 39 year old Malkin?
If Laf ain't it, this would be a steal for NYR in futures, and just make Cuylle your 3rd line winger as Laf is not top 6 on this squad.

I'd rather go with a rotation in which Gustafsson, Schneider, and Jones would all get 60ish games. I'd siphon a few games here and there from Miller and Lindy to make this math work.</div></div>
Fair. Another option could also be to run 11-7 and have Bonino sit.

No, he's not. And your statement about Trochek is even more delusional. He's literally a high end 2C and his contract is fine. The only reason Ranger fans want him potentially moved is to make room for Chytil. But Trochek has done nothing wrong and it's not his fault that the GM constructed the roster terribly and didn't trust Chytil to be 2C. But Trochek is great. And so is Lafreniere.

Of course these guys wouldn't come cheap- but NYR do have several chips that maybe could get some interest in a deal like this.</div></div>
IMO, Mika, Troch and Chytil are sufficient 1, 2 and 3 C's, so no reason to give up assets to chase another young center. Moving Trocheck to RW fills a need but also creates a hole at center, so no reason to do that. Drury will find another RW, either Kane in November or possibly Laffy or Othmann depending how camp goes.
