Not a good signing, he had a career year at 31, probably won't replicate and the contract is to long

Sometimes players sign less than the QO because they get and one-way deal and the QO is a two-way

You don't need to pay the signing bonus, on the 1st day of the contract. Kovalchuk had 2 payments of "signing bonus" in year 2 on his contract with L.A. They can make that payment on a day that they negotiate (most often July 1st) but not always

(PIT/MTL) - Matheson for Petry, Poehling
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Koskinen_The_Great</b></div><div>People on twitter were asking for the moon. Because those ppl are supposed to present the rationale folks here.
I saw maybe 1 person on here overvalue Petry. Most Habs fans here got this right.
He wasnt a cap dump, there was no money retained and they got a cheap asset to flip down the line.
I argued for weeks here that Petry had value when ppl were attaching picks to dump him and saying they wouldnt want his contract as it would be an anchor.
Hughes somehow got value when Petry demanded a trade and in a tight cap market where the Sharks retained 30% salary on Burns.
Habs fans here, once again, take the W on capfriendly.</div></div>
Yeah sometimes a few people sounds like the majority, but on the radio and podcast most people knew he was a cap dump

Carolina Hurricanes signed Jesperi Kotkaniemi (8 Years / $4,820,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ColonelX</b></div><div>Carolina's trying to save their face after that whole mess of an offersheet. KK didn't play like he deserved the length, the money and certainly not a 10 team NTC but he had them by the balls with his 6M$ qualifying offer. Oh and it's backloaded making it basically buyout and trade away proof.
Dundon should certainly consider this whole mess when going to the table for his next contract negotiation.
As per puckmedia that's the money rollout:
Yr 1 4M
Yr 2 4.5M
Yr 3 4.82M
Yr 4 4.82M
Yr 5 4.82M
Yr 6 5.2M
Yr 7 5.2M
Yr 8 5.2M
All salary, 10 team No Trade List in UFA Years</div></div>
Teams save more money on buyout when the deal is backloaded. This is why players prefer frontloaded contracts.
