Remember when Leafs fans riticuled me for saying Marner wont make under 10M
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CBJ4CUP</b></div><div>I dont think anyone believed marner was worth more than 10... it was more just reading the situation and looking at the matthews and nylander contracts and realizing that marner would get what he wants</div></div>
Bang on. It was hard explaining this to leafs fans. But those contract forced them into this situation with Marner.
It drove me crazy how quick they were to turn on him when he was holding out. It's not his fault the GM gifted crazy contracts to his teammates. He deserved to be paid accordingly.
If Marner signed his contract before Matthew's and Matthew's was the last one who had to hold out it would have been the other way around.

Dubas the dummy

Different teams and management have there own philosophies on how to manage their team. An athletic article about Tampa bay specifically recently came out showing how they usually sign young guys to a cheap 3 year bridge deal and then they sign them long term afterwards.
Johnson, killorn, palat, kucherov, vasilevsky, etc.
The highest cap hit of any of those players on 3 year deals so far, Kucherov $4.766M. A lot better than paying $11M for your RFA's.
Brisebois is currently offering Point less than $6M on a 3 year deal. Tampa Bay has taxes going for them, but even with that they are doing way better than Toronto at getting players to buy in.
Honestly I have no idea what Toronto was thinking when it came to Matthews.
I have no idea why Nylander wasn't traded after pulling the stunt he did.

Signing Point
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Johnjohn</b></div><div>Marner was paid fairly for Toronto because dubas set the bar
Other teams don’t have to be stupid like dubas
That being said I feel 7 million for 3 or maybe 8 million on a 5 or 6 year deal
Again my opinion. I might be wrong but I can’t see Tampa going over 8 million for his team comparison and cap space</div></div>
I think if Point decides to bet on himself and takes a three year deal, it's probably going to be in the area of $6.5m and no more than $7m. The advantage for Point is that the last year salary would be like $9m or $10m or even more, meaning his next QO will be that massive.

Dubas the dummy
TORONTO is the NHLs version of the Dallas Cowboys of NFL .. overpay a few people and NEVER win .. quiz of day .. last year either team even MADE it to a conference final?

Boy you are a piece of work huh?</div></div>
Fairly paid to play in Toronto in comparison to Matthews. Marner doesn't get that in TB.

Someone please offer sheet Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>blowing_the_zone</b></div><div>Nah. We don't have to pay him the crazy money he's asking for. The Isles can do that and we'll take the 4 firsts. I hear he's really good and worth Mcjesus money AND 4 firsts ! What could possibly go wrong?</div></div>
Islanders don’t want to give 4 1st rd picks for him. Dubas will continue to play this game of chicken with marner (just like he did with nylander and eventually gave in to his commands) and he’ll get what he wants because the leafs are a win now team and can’t afford to have him sit out for long.

Marners camp has lost its mind
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Johnjohn</b></div><div>He will make 3x 9.5 million. I will bet anyone this is what he will get. I still don’t get why leafs fans are thinking he will take less because of some home town discount . Pay up Toronto. He will be gone in 4 years and be one of the highest paid players in the nhl.</div></div>
They’re Hating on a hard working kid because he’s trying to maximize his earning potential
