Necas to Chicago
Agree on Carolina. Despite the reports, which Lebrun, Freidge and others have stated, I am not sure what we can offer for Necas they would accept. Imagine you're trading for Ullmark or Hronek if I am Tulksy. For Necas, I get the chance I want to be a star top line winger with Bedard. It meets his desire and there is no one really pushing him out of that spot near future. Chicago gets a budding top 6 maybe top line winger.

Getting in Laine
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dopplsan</b></div><div>100% - CHI should *not* be giving up 1sts for Laine. Issue is just there really isn't anything on CHI's roster right now (that is available) that they would want, and the high(er) end prospects CHI has probably aren't available, at least not in a trade just for Laine. Just not good trade partners right now.
As for "full value," I don't think any CBJ fan is saying he's worth a top-10 pick or anything; just not the pennies on the dollar some of these trades turn out to be, particularly where those same people call him **** then slot him in as LW1.

Most of the reporting I have seen imply that CBJ will need to eat salary or add a sweetener for the deal.

Kane Comes Back
I agree. I said so as much in the start of the build that i don't think he will, but figured i would run down the rabbit hole of how one might build a team based on his return. I personally like Stephenson more than Monahan, but if you bring back Kane you probably want a larger bodied center to create space for Kane compared to Stephenson.

If you notice, I mentioned in the description that it was mentioned as an idea in 32 thoughts today. If i were Toronto i wouldn't do it. I would personally look at trading for Clayton Keller or Cole Perfetti and draft picks. I took an interesting trade mentioned and made it part of the assumed roster construction.

I actually like Jones as a player. He is overpaid by a $1-2million with more term than he deserved, but he is here. The contract isn't great given that so i would rather upgrade in quality of player especially given the strength of our defensive prospects.

A.) We're not trying to trade Seth Jones. You call him whatever name you want. We're not trying to trade him.
B.) We're not winning the cup next year. With or without Marner. So, why?
C.) We're not falling into another Seth Jones 2.0. My position on that trade is VERY clear. Link below if you want to search my comments. My position has less to do with Seth Jones as a player and more about Stan Bowman's awful asset management.
https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/491022
This is a standard lose-lose situation. The Hawks shouldn't be sending assets away. We need to continue our development. Sign UFAs or make genuine hockey trades if an opportunity presents itself. Don't fall into the same Seth Jones trade where we don't end up getting any contract discount anyway. Just sign the UFA if that's the route you want to go.</div></div>
This would be considered a hockey trade for starters. Hawks have an abundance of picks to use as assets this way and the point is to make sure Bedard develops into his best version. I truly don't like signing as many defenseman as I did but if you can get away it for now go for it. In terms of Marner, you only make the trade if you know you can sign him and you like the term. I cannot project that, but assume given the Vlasic deal it is part of the conversation.

Agreed and you are not trading for Marner to win next year. You're trading for Marner to give Bedard actual help in the forward group. If Toronto comes around with that trade i would take a second rounder which we have multiple and make it every day of the week to ensure we develop Bedard to his fullest by supporting him now so he can dominate when the window opens.

If you were to do that much for a short term deal, I would rather try Monahan for a $7 million plus contract as he is a more natural center. Fair point on needing to add more for Stephenson though.

If i had my way, I would package the 19th overall pick and a second rounder to move up to pick up Ryan Leonard. He is the engine on the NTDP's top line. Strong two way payer looks like a top 6 winger who plays at both ends of the ice.

Don't mind the trade at all, but I would try signing him after that trade to a prove it deal of 2 years $3.5 million. If I am Davidson, i would be saving cap space to kick tires on AM34 or Debrincat if either get to free agency in summer of 24.
Wouldn't be shocked to see Domi back either this year.

It was a worry, but what free agent are you bringing in this class to help with it? The only one besides Domi I like and i don't think the Hawks would commit to him would be Zucker. My thought process if Davidson and this is my team is I kick the tires on AM34 when he hits free agency while still adding probably a top 5 talent next year.

Interesting concept to trade for Lafreniere. Don't think NYR fires Gallant to trade him though as i would assume you fire the coach to try getting someone to develop that asset. If you acquired him, i would not sign him to a long-term deal as given his production $5.5 million is steep.

Not all trades in this situation happen at the same time. The second trade is a deadline trade and NJ will not want to pay $7 million where Phil is looking to dump the whole cap. Comparatively, NJ has made it clear they want to push for a playoff spot and they lack wingers. They easily could make that deal at the deadline and again Flyers get the full cap dump minus the cap hit of a young player coming back.

Fixing Bowmans Mess
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lenny7</b></div><div>Just re: Vegas-They can't even afford to tender a contract to Kubalik this offseason. Don't see how that works.
A quick run through though (Just my personal opinions):
-I'd be 50/50 as the Leafs...
-I'd decline if I was the Oilers. I love MAF, but everyone is blaming this on goaltending when there's a heck of a lot more wrong in Edmonton than that (Bottom 6, lack of defence). MAF might raise the ceiling a bit, but even getting into the playoffs is a long shot at this point.
-I'd accept if I was Boston. DeBrusk's QO is outrageous...he's a non-tender candidate, regardless of what wild trades people make involving him.
-Sure for Florida. Why not? De Haan wouldn't be a bad option for their left side either...
-"Meh" on Gustafsson...he's no better than he was last year, when the Flyers got a 7th for him (with 50% retention!).</div></div>
On Vegas, they're so focused on winning the cup that they take the help for this year and pay the price for shedding a contract which they have to shed just to ice their roster this year. They will have to make extra difficult choices in the offseason whether thats trading McNabb, Karlsson, or one of their top scorers like Max.
Fair point on Edmonton both of you. The pick would have to be protected on their side and they have issues with depth scoring and need another defender. You could argue they could use pretty much of any of the big three MAF, Kubliak or DeHaan. It depends if Holland feels like this season has to be saved or if they're better keeping their draft capital.
Even better point on Gustaffsson, I forgot he went for a 7th last year. You could argue his season is better this year than last, but given the trade last year, hard to get that much of a jump in value without something closer to his 60 point season.

Perhaps. Pius i i think is priced right given the weird nature of when and where he scored. Ryan Suter i think you can convince to take a discount given that he is still getting paid alot of money by the Wild to not play for him. Maybe with the rest of these pieces he takes that discount, but that is certainly not a given.

Large overpay for Hamilton
What happens next year when the Hawks only have $6.5M in cap space space with Kubalik, Dach, BoQ, Lankinen, Kurashev, Murphy, Kalynuk all needing new contracts? MAF falls off which begs the question why would you pick him up and give up a very good player in Suter?</div></div>
Hamilton is looking for and will get Pietranglo money. His analytics support it as well. On MAF you're getting him for one year to determine if Lankinen can be a #1 to either Commasseo or one of the two goalies in this draft are ready to play. Plus Suter scored most of his goals/points against weaker teams and only scored once on the road.
In terms of next year you have almost $27 million to pay those players with Dach likely getting a bridge deal and Boquist getting a modest pay bump to no more than $3. Kalynukk and Kurashev haven't proven anything yet to make themselves expenses resigning. Murphy and Kubliak could take more, but you have plenty of money and other options like buying out Connelly.
