I don't think you understood the point of my post. It's not about the return. Letting a UFA like Stecher walk and go where he wants to go instead of shipping him off to somewhere he doesn't want to go builds good will with free agents and makes Detroit a place they want to go to. That good will is worth more than a 7th rd pick.

Why would they take on over 11mil over the next few seasons,

Poolman is a 3rd pair defenseman who has NO trade value whatsoever to us
You’re gonna have to pay us WAY MORE than a 5th to get these Cap hits off your books</div></div>
Ferland is LTIR, not dead money, and Poolman isn't completely devoid of trade value, he could get a late round pick

No they don't, Stecher has been consistently getting scratched when he's been healthy, he has little to no value

If you want Vancouver to retain salary and take Ritchie's contract, you'll have to make a much better offer.

Different Direction
They can most likely get Stecher for free. I don't think anyone is going to give up much for him and he's a UFA. I'm pretty sure he wants to back to the west coast where he is from and if a 7th is the best Yzerman gets he might just let him go where he wants at the end of the season.

Oh, if not a 1st, then probably a 2nd and a mid-tier prospect, maybe a 2nd and a 3rd, or maybe two 2nds. I'm not entirely sure, just know he isn't having an okay season

Not even close on Vancouver. Best piece they are getting is what looks like would be a late 1st.

Olen Zellweger (ANA)
Donovan Sebrango (DET)
Daemon Hunt (MIN)
Jordan Spence (LAK)
Heck, the Nucks could even call Columbus about Jake Bean, sounds like he's having an underwhelming season

OMG, do you realize how poorly Dermott has played for the Leafs? What makes you think he would be any better for Vancouver? Yes, the Canucks need one more top for D-man that can play the right side, but in no way is Dermott the answer

What should this team do Buy or Sell
If the goal is to win the Stanley Cup I would say they should sell, as long as the deals being offered are fair market value or above.
The team currently has two groups of core players if you categorize them by age. The problem with not selling off their assets now is that Vancouver has a terrible prospect pool and are right at the cap ceiling. If they don't trade for assets it's likely their older core group will age out of their prime before the team is truly competitive as they wont have any impact players graduating to the NHL and they wont be able to afford key players in free agency. If they trade the players that are in the older group now for young assets, those assets should be solid supporting pieces right when the current younger core group are hitting their prime, since some of these players will be on ECL's they will also likely have cap space to add to their roster when they are competitive.

Redoing the offseason
That OEL trade really hurts long-term for the team. Would've been a lot easier in hindsight (and honestly even without) to bite the bullet on those contracts for the year and have cap space for play this offseason. At least Garland is a player though.
Dermott for Schenn + pick might still be a play for the Leafs if they can't find a good fit for a top 4 guy that could work for canucks in the longer run.

Seravalli just said it's gonna be more than a 1st and a high-end prospect and that's not taking into account if the Canucks retain too
