50Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 5 - TDL additions (Go Big or Go Small)

Does that make me right just because I added "it's simple"?
Also...the inconsistencies on the power play pre-date Boucher...so we can keep going back and blame the assistant running special teams or...at some point...you need to look to the guy who's accountable for the staff and holding the players responsible, too.
I'm not hollering for him to be fired immediately...but I'm not glossing over his glaring shortcomings, either.</div></div>
It's my way of writing... My bad on that part... It's obviously not simple...
But the inconsistencies were there with Babcock, no? And before him as well when they stank

See the Canes gave up two break away goals to the Leafs. If the Leafs have given up two break away goals, ALL.six Dmen would have been traded on CapFriendly Leafs fans by the of the second period intermission.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>I think we just need to be realistic about the expectations.
Assuming he signs...I think it's a terrific trade for what it was. We used a 6th to get a 4th round caliber d-man who's already had a few years to develop. He may or may not ever make it to the NHL level..just like any 4th round pick... but they have the advantage of more information and they obviously liked what they saw. Compared to what a late 6th round pick would likely yield? It's probably the best use of draft picks the leafs deployed this deadline.</div></div>
Ding ding ding
I'm not expecting a sure fire top 4 defender, but betting on a guy that the organization clearly likes with those sort of traits is fine by me. To me, the Webber trade makes complete sense for all parties involved

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>I think everyone acknowledges the shortcomings when it comes to top 4 RHD. Brodie has been one of those spots but took a big step back this year. Previously, there hasn't been a whole lot of wiggle room to add another big d-man that is also a right shot.
I also don't think it's fair to assume that, because Tre didn't address a top 4 RHD at this deadline that it isn't an issue for him that he wants to fix. We know he's been in the D market since the moment he got here.
They tried to re-sign Schenn but it didn't work out
He tried to sign Gudas
Tried to trade for Zadorov and Tanev
My estimation is that he simply wasn't willing to give up the few assets we have to make a more substantial acquisition this year. I'd like to assume he just didn't want to pay the prices and is hoping to do the bulk of his remodeling this off-season.
I still hold that there wasn't anything that was traded at this deadline that would have been worth the price paid AND would have made a significant impact on a playoff run. I'd like to hope Tre was just as frustrated as we were to not be able to add to that position. Whether or not he's capable of actually landing the right player(s) remains to be seen....but I'm not going to fuss about it not happening inside of his first year.</div></div>
This is the offseason where you are going to see the blue line get massively retooled. So many good defenseman that fit with the Leafs like Montour, Roy, Walker, DeMelo, Pesce, Hakanpaa, Desharnais, etc.
Expecting Brad to fix our blue line within a single season of taking over is just ridiculous. Look at how long it took Dubas to rid the roster of Lou and finally get his guys. Curious to see what next seasons roster looks like

Remember when they traded Hoffman to the Sharks specifically so he wouldn't be in the Atlantic, only for the Sharks to immediately flip him to Florida? Good times
They even had a condition in the EK65 trade that said "Sens receive a 1st round pick from the Sharks (no later than 2022) if Karlsson is on an Eastern Conference roster (reserve list) during the 2018-19 season."
Quite the 180 from those days with two of their best players now suiting up for divisional rivals

He will only play in 55 games. Which mean he is on a 97 (ish) point pace.
Which ****ing pisses me off because I was very loud in saying he'd hit 100 points this year lmao. He needs 17 points in 8 games to do it. Not impossible but... ehh

Cowan could play for the Leafs but only after the London Knights are eliminated from the playoffs. I good assumption would be the Knights are going to have a longer playoff run than the Leafs.

I think we should just be pseudo-buyers, there are some glaring positional needs that we need to address, and too few sellers to actually address said needs. Please don't be dumb Brad

50Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 5 - TDL additions (Go Big or Go Small)
Here are some of my takeaways from the Lyubushkin trade:
- The double retention is strange, probably indicates a larger move will happen where we needed to save ~100k to make it work
- Losing that 3rd and 6th likely indicates that Robertson will be included in any significant trade as supplementary value. He and Timmins are the most likely bargaining chips
- We might not be adding another defenseman? Getting double retention on a guy only for him to be a scratch would be weird. I think the defense group is largely set, maybe we are adding a forward? Another center perhaps?
- Management does not give a rat's ass about analytics and its all about physicality / intangibles (see Ryan Reaves signing for further proof)
This trade will be much easier to evaluate next Friday when we know what the real purpose of this deal was

I mean Rielly Boosh was a thing and it was pretty good, plus it leaves the door open for more potential moves. And we really didn’t pay that much for him (not nothing but not huge either). So I’ll say why not

2. What is the plan on D? I know there has been lots of debate here about who to pickup. Personally I think that Carrier is going to be the biggest steal of the deadline. He put up 30 points and was elite in his rookie season playing with Ekholm, since then his offence is gone but he's among the league leaders in hits and plays a really solid defensive game. He's small which is the biggest knock but his and Rielly's analytics profiles look like together they would be an elite #1 pair. I think the worst move we can make is Rasmus Andersson, he's essentially a bigger, bad version of Rielly. He is top 5 among defenseman for D zone turnovers and has less hits than Carrier despite Carrier being 5'11.
I see two paths on D; (i) We leave Brodie-Lili, Benoit-McCabe and focus on finding a partner for Rielly. (ii) Tre tries to significantly redo the D by finding a partner for Rielly AND upgrading either Brodie or Lili.
Thoughts?</div></div>
I remember people saying too much is being made of RD vs LD (I remember <a href="/users/palhal" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@palhal</a> definitely being one person) and well...tonight kind of showed what happens when you play guys out of their natural side.
Before the last 6-7 game stretch, Brodie looked horrible out there but during this stretch of 6-7 games he's been solid...so what changed? He was playing on naturally stronger side.
I don't know about the TDL but RD definitely needs to be addressed in the off season whether it's a trade or signing Matt Roy or someone who can bring stability to that side of D.

I think everyone gets hung up on rookie fever even though this draft isn't supposed to be nearly as deep as last year. Tanev is worth the late 1st, especially retained.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>So...it's a weak draft...and a late first shouldn't be take as similar value to, say, a late first last year.
Do I want to give up a first for Tanev? No. But I can see it happening. This package is too rich...but maybe Tanev + some depth piece.
Or something like a 1st + 4th + ahl player for Tanev + 3rd
Hopefully treliving has a solid understanding of what Tanev wants on an extension...if that's not something he wants to commit to, I don't think he should give up a first for a rental.</div></div>
Flames should add a bottom 6 forward (Rooney, Duehr, etc) and Leafs should remove the 3rd and 5th

I've been a Liljegren supporter since he's been drafted but I'm just not seeing him take that step. For me, it would depend on how extension talks have gone...but he's not someone that has earned $3m+ to me...maybe worth the risk if that's a long term deal...but I've just been seeing a lot of mental errors recently.
From calgary's end...they obviously get a younger guy that can step right into the lineup with control vs a typical draft pick.
TIme to cut bait or hold the line?</div></div>
I wouldn't like it, but I could see them possibly doing it. I just think with Tanev's injury past and age, if anything happens it would look like a pretty bad move when Liljegren is still an RFA

Totally understand why you're asking this question and we'll.. it's a difficult one for sure. The biggest problem is Tanev's age and yeah, probably won't get more than 2 good years out of trading for him and signing him to probably a 3-4 year deal.
I was really hoping Lillijegren would figure it out and become at least a rock solid second pair D but right now he's only a steady third pair.
I suppose the real question is what to do when Tanev does start declining because this team as is may still be trying to win.

But I would only want to do it if we know Tanevs going to resign here. If it’s just a rental, keep Lili
