Center and Franchise
This is a pretty darn good team on paper, but I see three issues that might hinder it's competitiveness:
1. No cap space for extra hands. You need to carry at least 22 players all the time during the season for minor injuries and cold streaks, there's no way to get an extra player up without putting someone on LTIR. Ideally the Flames would shed another $1.5M-$2M.
2. Even with a $4M increase to the salary cap in 2024/25, you'd still lose a quality player or two with all the expiring contracts. Losing Backlund to free agency might not be a huge hit with some of the young forwards the Flames have coming up, but the entire bottom 4 defense group is expiring as well. Nylander, Zadorov, Pelletier, and Ruzicka will certainly be getting raises. Kylington might if he returns to form, as could Kahkonen and Wolf with good seasons.
3. Defence and goaltending is pretty suspect. Kylington is a real wild card, he has one standout season under his belt and no guarantee to return to that level after a year away. Tanev's body is falling apart, and I don't think Oesterle should be an every game guy. After that your next best Dman is Gilbert, who also doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. It's tough to say what you'd get from Kahkonen, Vladar, and Wolf. If all three prove they're not ready to be NHL starters, you're hooped.
All in all a pretty fun team, and certainly different than most posts around.

i'd prefer something like liljegren + robertson for dube and zadorov instead tbh, or even coleman + zadorov for liljegren since calgary presumably wants out from coleman's contract?</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Erbas1915</b></div><div>No that's not enough for them. The only reason we'd trade Dube is to upgrade with Willy, I'd be happy to sign Dube long-term otherwise. And Coleman is the least of our worries, maybe a tad overpaid but not by much. Plus he's one of the few players who actually loves Calgary, I'd say you'd have to give up actual assets for him</div></div>
In regards to Coleman, he plays a unique role for the Flames as the only guy who can drag the team into the mud. He plays with a ton of grit but rarely hurts the team playing that way, and he's a good PKer. Tkachuk was great for that kind of stuff too, but here we are.

Assuming Timmins is on the team I'd target a left shot 3rd pairing guy. Some UFAs still available are Caleb Jones, Libor Hajek, Simon Benoit, and Patrick Nemeth. No real difference makers there but more depth is never a bad thing, and no one will cost over $1M.

I don't see the same value in your Lindholm trade as Vancouver got for Horvat. Aatu Raty was one year removed from a PPG season in a professional mens league when he was traded, and Beauvilier is a couple years yonger than Horvat. They held more value than Grzelcyk and Harrison do in this situation. On top of that I believe Lindholm is more valuable than Horvat because of his two-way play. He's first over the boards against top competition and on the PK, and gets Selke votes every year.
Also Forbort is a cap dump and you'd have to pay to move him.
Edit: forgot to mention I'm pretty sure the Bruins can't trade their 2025 1st since it's tied to the Bertuzzi trade.

As a couple other guys said, the Hurricanes don't have the cap space for Backlund, even at 50% retained.
Besides that, I find this group of defenceman to be pretty suspect. Hanifin out and Timmins in is a pretty big drop in ability, and Oesterle shouldn't be an everyday guy. The Suter money would be better spent on a defenceman in this case, then you give Ruzicka, Corronato, and maybe Ben Jones a bigger shot.

I'm not saying that this proposed Lindholm trade is close, but I think looking at the Bo Horvat trade is probably more appropriate.</div></div>
That's why I suggested to ignore Alex Tuch. Essentially I believe Lindholm's value to be in the range of a top prospect and two first round picks. The Horvat trade was a good prospect, one first, and a cap dump (albeit a decent player). Horvat is a great scorer, but Lindholm is a textbook high end two-way centre, so I think he has more value.

If I'm Sweeney, I'm not adding DeBrusk in a trade for Lindholm since you'd be plugging one hole but opening another, and I don't think Lysell is replacing DeBrusk's production this season. If the Bruins are trading for Lindholm, they should be going all in and hording NHL talent. I suppose I didn't address the Bruins cap in the counter-offer though, so one of Grzelcyk or Forbort would need to go to the Flames.

Sure is a lot of undervaluing Elias Lindholm today. Look at the Jack Eichel trade, ignore Alex Tuch, and work from there.

TWO firsts?</div></div>
Grzelcyk only fits if the Flames are trading Hanifin as well, but otherwise I like the guy. I still see promise in Lysell despite his poor World Juniors and overall season. I'd put him in a similar class as Pelletier, Zary, and Corronato among Flames prospects. Mason Lohrei would be a good add for the Flames too since they're lacking in D prospects. The Bruins' 2025 first rounder is tied to the Bertuzzi trade, so I don't think they can trade it. My counter-offer for Lindholm with $2M retained would be Lysell, Poitras, 2026 1st and 2nd.

Not sure you're getting that kind of return for Grzelcyk, let alone any return for Forbort. The Bruins would probably have to pay to move him.
Any package acquiring Lindholm and Hanifin starts with Lysell and Lohrei plus a couple first round picks.

Elias Lindholm is one of the most qualified players in the NHL to replace Patrice Bergeron, and certainly the only one who is available. If you want him with $2M retained, you're looking at the equivalent a top prospect and two first round picks, not dissimilar to the Eichel return minus Alex Tuch. The Bruins don't really have a top tier prospect, although Lysell, Lohrei, and Poitras are intriguing. Jeremy Swayman is the Bruins best trade chip, but he wouldn't have a lot of value to the Flames with Dustin Wolf in the pipeline.

I don't think the Bruins would be giving up such important roster players if they're acquiring both Lindholm and Hanifin. They certainly can't sign both past this season, so they'd be going all in trying to win and DeBrusk and Carlo help them do that. One of Matt Grzelcyk or Derek Forbort would be the defenceman coming back, and probably Trent Frederick for a forward since he's still unsigned. I'd also much prefer Matthew Poitras over John Beecher, and I don't think that's an unreasonable ask. Lysell might be tough to get since he's a cheap call-up for the Bruins, but the Bs haven't got much else to offer.

Post Bergeron Bruins
The fit is certainly right for Lindholm and the Bruins, the trouble is the Bs don't really have the goods the Flames would be looking for. The big asset is obviously Swayman, but with Dustin Wolf in the pipeline he's not nearly as attractive to the Flames as he might be elsewhere. On top of that the 2026 1st rounder isn't a huge chip for a Flames team that is still trying to compete. Without Swayman I think the Bruins would need to add one of Lysell or Lohrei, plus the 2025 1st.

Not enough value for Hanifin in the trade, and that extension is a million more than he should get. I think the Zadorov trade is lateral at best.

This trade doesn't make sense for the Flames. Zadorov brings a unique aspect to the Flames' D with his physical presence, and Backlund has been their primary shutdown forward for a decade. Girard is a good defenceman but doesn't add anything the Flames don't already have in Hanifin or Kylington. On top of all that they need to add a 2nd round pick? No sir.

But who is going to play LD this year? Someone's got to be out there when Fowler is on the bench, and I wouldn't be thrilled if it was always Hagg or White. And is it worth hanging onto all of those prospects when it is such a strong group? Hanifin is the guy right now you want your prospects to turn into, and he'll still be a quality player when the Ducks get really good. I'm not stuck on Zellweger having to be the guy coming back to Calgary, but it's nice that he's a local kid.

Calgary Now
Jakob Pelletier, Matt Coronato, and Walker Duehr will most likely take the 3 remaining forward spots. Connor Zary could earn a spot with a good camp, and Ben Jones could be a dark horse for 4th line C. Hopefully Kevin Rooney gets his game back to NHL quality to at least be a 13th or 14th forward, but he was valuable for the Wranglers as well. Cole Schwindt and Dryden Hunt could also play spot duty when injuries at forward arise. For all of those reasons I don't think the Flames need to add another forward, at least not without shipping someone out.
Oliver Kylington is said to be returning to the team this year, so he should be a regular over Jordan Oesterle, which would send Dennis Gilbert back to the AHL. If the Flames manage to move Hanifin before the season starts I think they need an NHL caliber D-man coming back since the organization is pretty lean otherwise. Ilya Solovyov and Jeremie Poirier look promising but probably won't factor into this coming season.
In goal, Dustin Wolf needs to get NHL games in for sure, but I don't think trading Dan Vladar is necessary at this point. With the Wranglers also being in Calgary and Wolf still being waivers exempt it should be easy to move him up and down often enough to play 10-15 games this season. Of course, that all depends on how things flesh out in training camp. Other than that the Flames are pretty much tied to Markstrom for better or worse.
Thank you for coming to my Flames talk.

I don't think Duehr brings anything other than good speed and work ethic, so he's better suited for 4th line duties. He's certainly not a scorer, and with how Coleman's been playing lately I wouldn't take him off the 3rd line.
