This is 100% incorrect. If San Jose retains Kane's right they will need to trade him for pennies on the dollar or be stick with a $7MM AAV for a player who will never play for their organization again.

There is ZERO chance the Devils would get Bear PLUS a pick.
Subban's market value is probably STILL below the $6MM that this trade would bring him to, so he has negative value.
Bear is an upcoming 2-way defenseman who has positive results again elite competition.

Oilers - Injury Adjustment
Probably because they are currently paying over $17MM on their right defence alone.
With Subban and Severson above Vatanen on the right side depth chart as well as Vatanen's contract expiring at the end of the year....it makes a lot of sense.
Just because New Jersey isn't up against the cap, doesn't mean they're happy spending over $4MM on a third pairing defenseman.
That's why......

Oiler perspective
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mrpoopybuthole</b></div><div>I don't c him resigning tho :(</div></div>
It's pretty impossible to know this.....if he's a good fit then it's very realistic that he could be resigned as the Oilers have quite a bit of money available next year.
If it doesn't work, the Oilers could easily move him at the deadline and recoup that 2nd round pick (albeit lower) from a contending team.
The Oilers should worry less about rookies coming into the NHL and filling roster spots and worry more about adding bonafide NHL defenceman to a roster who's defence ranked 5th worst in the NHL last season.
But maybe they haven't learned anything over the past 13 years?

Faulk is in the last year of his deal and could get the opportunity to play on the powerplay with Connor McDavid and boost his value on his next deal.
Realistically, a 2nd round pick and Puljujarvi ISN'T poor asset management because of the number of 1-year contracts the Oilers already have this season. If they are out of the playoff picture come trade deadline, they could easily move someone (including Faulk) to a contender and recoup the pick if needed. Not to mention that the Oilers haven't exactly been experts in drafting in past years so a 2nd round pick isn't that valuable.
The Oilers NEED to acquire a bonafide NHL player for Puljujarvi.....anything less and the trade will be considered a loss. If acquiring said player means adding pick(s) to a Puljujarvi trade then I'm all in

Edmonton had the 5th worst defence in the league last year and haven't done ANYTHING to address it. Regardless of what Holland says they NEED defence.....not to mention that I doubt Holland would ever go out and state that he was looking for D because it would (a) drive the price up and (b) show little support for his current players if no deal can be made.
Gardiner also hadn't signed in Carolina at the time those comments were made.

Marner's holding out and threatening to play in Europe for $8,750,000? Marner should get over $10MM as he's Toronto's best player who can actually play over 65 games in a season.
Maybe Marner will be the first of the Leafs young stars to prove that he actually wants to play in Toronto and sign a long-term deal.....my article on this at the Globe and Mail later today.

Oilers draft picks
This would be great if was the 1980's....but scoring A LOT of goals in today's NHL isn't that relevant. Only five Stanley Cup winning teams have finished in the top 5 for goals for over the last 10 years.
The key to the list above is that the Oilers haven't drafted a single TOP PAIRING defenseman over the course of the last 15 years. The only way the Oilers will be better is if they significantly improve their defense by bringing in Top 4 talent OR developing some of their more recent draft picks.

Please I just want the Oilers to be good again
I think if you are signing Hall you keep Nuge and Larsson and stay away from Rust, Buchnevich and Faulk. With the maturation of players like Yamamoto and Benson I don't think you need to add mid-range players like Rust/Buchnevich.
I'm the biggest critic of the Oilers defense (currently one of the worst in the league of which they've literally done nothing to fix) but I think by next year we will begin to see substantial improvement through the likes of Jones and Bouchard.
And to the people who claim that the "Oilers won't be good for a while".....a team that can ice two 100-point players will always be a threat once they're able to strengthen team defense.
Just my thoughts...

Hoffman and the Oilers
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kosterjr</b></div><div>Easy no from the Cats, they would want a top end defensive prospect to start for Hoffman. They have no reason to trade him unless they get what they want in return.</div></div>
I don't disagree that they don't have to trade him, I can understand why you would say that they would want a defensive prospect.....but it's 1-year of Hoffman for a first round pick, that in itself is a fairly solid trade (especially based on where Edmonton is predicted to finish).
The Oilers are loaded on defensive players/prospects (particularly on the left side) so that could be an option....but to say it's an "EASY NO" from the Cats is just wrong.
Finally, the Panthers aren't getting a "high end" prospect (think Bouchard or Broberg) from ANY team for 1-year of Mike Hoffman & a 2020 1st Round Pick.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ccc</b></div><div>Yes but we’re assuming Hoffman has the potential to resign like anybody right, and I wouldn’t used JP draft number as his value anymore. And I just feel Florida would rather a cup run than this return as Gagner yes slots in to the roster but they’d rather get a cup chance I’d think</div></div>
Okay, just so I understand.....Florida has a chance to win the cup this season with 10 forwards signed and $2.4MM in cap space. The Panthers also just signed a 30-year goalie to a $10MM/year contract who has never played more than 65 games (which is a lot for a goalie, but you don't win every game you play) in a season while also having him backed up by a guy with 11 games of NHL experience and a 3.05 GAA.
I really like the top end players in Florida on forward and defense, but if anything I think it would be more hard-pressed to get Edmonton to approve this deal than Florida. The Panthers jump at the chance to add a 2020 1st Round draft pick and a potential high-end, cost controlled prospect EVERY time in this deal.
Just my thoughts....

Just a note....if this trade were to happen, Hoffman would probably have to waive his NTC to come to Edmonton indicating that it would probably be easier to resign him (if desired) than you suggest.
Manning simply isn't going the other way....Florida only has 10 forwards on their current roster and very few NHL-ready prospects. IF something were to happen I'm guessing player(s) like Gagner and Puljujarvi would be going to Florida.

Oilers Moves
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>bigguycom</b></div><div>Do not include a 1st in a Risto trade, have you seen this years draft class? Likely a lotto pick for the Oilers.</div></div>
With this lineup the Oilers are contending for a playoff spot, you could protect the pick Top 3 but that's whatever. At this point, Oilers fans should stop worrying about drafting players and start worrying about acquiring bonafide NHL players, specifically right-shot defenceman who can move the puck.
And the 2020 draft class is great, but at some point the Oilers need to start developing a winning culture. If the season goes off the rails, you have Frolik on an expiring contract to deal for additional picks, as well as a number of other forwards on 1-year deals.
The Calgary trade also allows the Flames to consider moving Brodie (again)....which could gain them almost $1MM in cap space between Frolik and Brodie.

The Oilers would be better off to try and acquire Shattenkirk from the Rangers (provided he waives his NMC)....their need for a puck-moving right shot defenceman FAR outweighs their need at forward as a puck-moving defenceman who plays 20 minutes/night would have a positive influence on the entire forward group.

You know what else “doesn’t really tell how well a player is at all”? YOU and your insane justification that Barkov (who is a GREAT player) is somehow more valuable than Connor McDavid?!?!?
You know that McDavid has more points that Barkov playing 126 games less...or are points not a good way to tell how good a player is?
You know that McDavid has won the Ted Lindsay Award 2 times right? Or is an award voted on by the NHLPA not a good way to tell how good a player is?
Man, I respect that you’re probably one of the 7 people who actually buys a ticket to attend Florida Panthers games....but you are officially nominated for “WORST TAKE OF THE YEAR” after the gem you just presented above.
Btw....ANY team in the league would take Connor McDavid and his contract because at $12.5 MILLION as he’s still underpaid and by far the best player in the league.
