Oilers - Defense Fix

I understand your perspective regarding AA, but if you remember the negotiations from last year they didn't exactly go smoothly so there were signs he may not be happy in Detroit. The caveat to this would be that Holland may have had something to do with it, so that would change things.
In regards to Shattenkirk, I know Edmonton wasn't on his list previously....but it's clear that NYR are moving on and his options are basically to accept a trade and reinvigorate his career OR get bought out and see what happens from there....either way it's fairly clear he'll probably be playing elsewhere next season.

I don’t necessarily agree with all these moves...but this is EXACTLY what the Oilers SHOULD be doing this offseason. Using higher picks as currency and adding these picks to deals to rid the team of poor contracts. Good players can be found everywhere with enough work...bad contracts don’t just go away.

Fixing Oiltown
Again, with respect, you don't understand the game if you truly believe secondary scoring is the team's biggest weakness.
In the NHL today, offence is created through the breakout and quick transition from the back end. The Oilers don't have that and those components greatly affect a teams ability to score, and more specifically, it affects "average" players who need to receive the puck in positive positions in order to make plays. 97, 93 & 29 are exceptions to this rule...not to mention that having these three players should be enough in itself for offense, if your team doesn't allow <strong>271 Goals Against</strong> your probably close to a playoff team.

Fixing Oiltown
With all due respect, this is basically the same Oilers defence that allowed 271 goals against in 18-19....I don’t think this “fixes” the Oilers at all.
People need to figure out that adding more forwards WILL NOT make a significant change to the Oilers unless impactful change is made on defence as well.

What does George McPhee/Kelly McCrimmon get for Eakin and Haula when the team is over the Salary Cap by $4MM and needs to sign William Karlsson AND become compliant before the start of next season?
That's the key....

Who plays defense for this team? This lineup has 3 rookies on a defense that allowed the 6th most goals in the NHL.....
The Oilers can add all the forwards they want....they won't improve until they fix their defense.

Ive taken over for an idiot
In 2018-19 the Edmonton Oilers allowed 271 goals against (tied for 6th worst in the NHL)....the team above would probably allow 290.
Anyone who thinks adding forwards to the Oilers will fix their problems clearly doesn't understand what the team's biggest issue has been for the past 13 years (with the outlier being 16/17).
This defense on this roster would get overwhelmed when healthy....and that's before Klefbom gets hurt for his regular 20% of the season. Not only would the defense get overwhelmed, but every one of the armchair GM's out there would complain that Bear and Bouchard were "rushed" and talk about how over-rated they are as prospects, when in reality it's the same organizational failure that happens EVERY YEAR for the Oilers....failing to ice an NHL-level defense and placing young players in a position to fail with little to no experience and/or mentor-ship.

Which trade favours Edmonton?
Buffalo trade saves them HUGE capspace and helps them sign Skinner and unloads Bogosian
Boston has Heinen, McAvoy and Carlo to sign this summer....with Chara and Debrusk next year. They will need unload a D. Lucic is more serviceable than Backes and the 2nd Round pick makes up for the extra years on Lucic's deal until you consider buying him out. And that doesn't even take into account the salary retained.
A.A. isn't re-signinng with Detroit as it's already been reported that there were issues during contract negotiations. The salaries even out and Gagner is off the books as Detroit continues to rebuild.
Winnipeg needs to move someone to sign Connors, Laine and Myers....plus they get Laine's good buddy and 1st Rounder next year.
Carolina gets Kassian on a one year tryout to replace Ferland.
I don't see where any one trade favours either team

Unhappy McDavid

In what world do you think Hart is a "non-starter" for CONNOR MCDAVID.
If, HUGE IF, McDavid were ever available it would take AT LEAST the package involving Hart and Couturier.....and to be honest, that might not even do it.
You must be a goalie, because having the BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD typically trumps what you perceive as the most important position in hockey. Not to mention, that while a goaltender is important, you don't need the best in the world to win.

Lucic might not help them get faster, but the 2 2nd round draft picks that come with the deal sure will.

EDM Next Year Improved top 6
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>EthanBearForVezina</b></div><div>It’s not an excuse bud, the oilers have legitimate prospects now. Jones and bear are both good puck movers and have two years of AHL experience under their belt.</div></div>
I understand where you're coming from....but you saw first hand how big the jump to the NHL was for both Bear (GP 18, G 1, A 3, -18) and C. Jones (GP 17, G 1, A 5, -9).
One of the biggest issues with the Oilers over the past 13 years has been their assumption that players with little to no NHL experience can survive/succeed at the NHL level. We've seen this with depth forwards, young draft picks and European players at all positions.
It's great that the Oilers have some legitimate prospects at the AHL level, and that's a big reason why I believe they can afford to use their 2019 Draft picks as assets to acquire NHL-level talent and/or include in packages to clear cap space. Especially since the Oilers won't have any type of cohesive management structure and/or vision in place by the draft. The Oilers need to continue to let the Oilers prospects over-develop in the AHL, and have legitimate NHL-calibre players to teach them and help them grow whenever they are called up.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MTLFAN27</b></div><div>Would you consider trading Klefbom or Nurse?</div></div>
I would be EXTREMELY hesitant to trade Nurse or Klefbom.
I love Klef but you can pretty much count on him being hurt for 15-25% of the season. If another defenceman comes along who costs about the same and is the same age, I consider the move...but I don't actively shop him.
Nurse is interesting. The Oilers NEED to sign him as soon as their able to a long-term, team friendly deal (think Klefbom/Larsson). If he wants more than I think you explore a trade.....hopefully if it gets to this (which I don't think it would) the Oilers have already brought in enough defensive help to give you options on what you look for in a trade.
Klefbom and Nurse are the only current Oilers defenseman with any experience in the NHL who can move the puck....and they are mediocre at that. The only way you move them is for an upgrade in player/term/salary.

The Oilers CANNOT go into next season expecting players with little to no NHL experience to succeed, especially on defence. That’s what they’ve done the past 12 years with little success. The time is now for the Oilers... they can’t keep using development as an excuse.

If the Oilers go into next year without adding any actual puck-moving defenceman (as shown above) then it really doesn’t matter how many new forwards they add.
The Oilers will NEVER succeed with their current defence hard-wrapping the puck or firing it high off the glass.
As much as people want to believe the forwards are the issue with the Oilers....the fact that they can’t transition the puck and allow 270+ goals a year is the real problem.

Oilers 19-20
Who would lose their job? The Oilers don’t currently have a GM and although Keith Gretzky and staff are probably preparing the draft, they still don’t have a proper management structure or vision in place based on the new GM (unless it’s Keith Gretzky).
Every player that’s added in this scenario is a player the Oilers would WANT THAT pick to become:
1st = Subban
2nd = Toffoli
3rd = Burakovsky
4th = Pelech
All these players have some term and the Oilers use ONE draft year to clear out a few more expensive contracts.

How is it horribly bad for LA?
Kovalchuck for Lucic is negative value for LAK because Kovalchuck makes more money and can’t be bought out.
The Kings also get 2 2nd Rounders to help with their rebuild for a player who severely underperformed his contract last year.
