If the Caps want a Yamamoto-type player, they can just re-sign Conor Sheary. IMO they've got too many middle-six wingers already.

The Caps GM said they want him to be a Cap for life, Wilson's said he wants to be a Cap for life, the most connected local writer Tarik El-Bashir has said he expects him to re-sign, and Friedmann said on his podcast today that he reached out about Wilson and was told emphatically that the Caps view him as a core part of the team and won't be moving him. There's been about as much confirmation that Wilson's not on the block as you could possibly get. What else do you want us to say? Proposals with him in them are a waste of time, but they make up probably 1/3 to 1/2 of the Caps trades proposed by non-Caps fans on this site, and have for years now. It gets pretty obnoxious.

Yes of course, what do a bunch of professional hockey referees and the IIHF Disciplinary Panel know about the rules of hockey? So sorry to have impugned the character of your son, Mr or Mrs Eyssimont.
This is the most ridiculous hockey argument I think I’ve ever seen someone make, so congratulations on that.

Another Idea
I haven't heard any credible buyout rumors about Mantha, pretty sure that's just people extrapolating from the Caps talking to teams about him. The only media in DC that has any actual connections with the team is Tarik El-Bashir with the Athletic, and he wrote this in a mailbag last week:
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quote:</div>Is the ticket price to offload Anthony Mantha (paying a good chunk of his salary and adding a sweetener) steeper than just keeping him, hoping the new coach turns out to be an Anthony Whisperer and, at worst, a depth guy who covers for injuries and rest? I.e., are we stuck with Mantha? — Scott P.
I suspect the Caps are going to make an attempt to move Mantha this offseason. But, like Kuznetsov, I don’t see MacLellan making a deal just to dump his salary. (I also don’t see them buying him out, for what it’s worth.)</div>
In another article the week before that, he wrote this:
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quote:</div>There’s been some buzz about the Caps possibly using a buyout to create some cap space. A source tells me, however, that there are no plans to buy out anyone this offseason.</div>
People thinking the Caps will buy Mantha out, or pay/retain to get rid of him are going to be disappointed.

Ideally the 4th from the Caps and the 3rd from the Avs would go to a 3rd team that does the retention. The Caps are still trying to compete and they'll likely need every dollar of cap space they can use to do that.

And if you'd watched the play, you'd have seen he moved his knee out to catch Sandin's knee when he dodged out of the way. <a href="https://scoutingtherefs.com/2023/05/39863/iihf-usa-eyssimont-ejected-kneeing-sweden-sandin/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">That's why after review, the refs gave Eyssimont a 5 minute major for kneeing and ejected him from the game.</a>

EK65 to WSH the weaponize Cap space
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Iggyfenton</b></div><div>Sharks get rid of Karlsson get a #8 pick. The $4mil retention is meaningless as they won’t compete until 2026-27 anyway.
Might as well get something now for Karlsson because his value is at an all time high. EK65 also has a NMC so you need to deal him somewhere he wants to go.
I think Washington is one of the only places that would roll the dice on EK staying healthy.</div></div>
Did you forget the Caps already have their own high-end offensive defenseman, who's coincidentally also named Carlson? They've got no need for EK, certainly not at the cost of the 8th OA pick when they've got much bigger needs and limited resources to meet them.
Also, since I've decided to make this my white whale, Jensen and TVR were both signed to extensions a couple months ago, and teams don't extend guys and then trade them before the extensions kick in.

Wilson's 29 and he's scored at a 54 point pace over the last five years, so I guess you must be confusing him with somebody else. That would explain the ridiculous offer.

The recency bias is strong here. He tore his ACL in a knee-on-knee collision at the end of last season, then missed 7 games with a hairline fracture in his foot from blocking a shot this season. Those are his only significant injuries since 2014. The injury-prone label is premature.
