Arpon Basu vision for Cole Caufield
It appears he is becoming more of a complete player. His plus/minus (for what it is worth) has improved each year and he is now more of a threat as a playmaker than he was in the past, which means teams have to play him differently (not just as a pure shooter). I think he is doing fine and will continue to get better.

Positive offseason
I know that Marchessault is 33 and probably cannot command a really long deal, but I would be surprised if he signed for just 3 years, especially given the year he is having this year. This ie likely to be his last contract, so he probably wants one that takes him to 38 or 39 years old.
I think Pittsburgh would want more than that to give up the #9 pick (but I could be worng...it is Dubas after all).
I would trade Matheson somewhere else, such as a team that really needs an offensive minded D-man (Winnipeg has Morrissey already). This would maximize his trade value.

The real question is why would we ever do that Sharks trade</div></div>
Caufield’s plus/minus has improved each year. He is -7 this year. Mercer is -20
Mercer has half the points that Caufield does this year.

Caufield with Jack Hughes
Montreal finally has a 1st line that plays well together (and Caufield and Suzuki are good friends) and they have Caufield locked up long term but the plan would be to break up the first line in the hope that (1) Mercer fits in as well as Caufield does on that line and (2) that Mercer gets signed to a long term contract and (3) that Mercer rediscovers his scoring touch (Mercer has half the points that Caufield does this year)?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Shibbal18</b></div><div>Don't see that Sabre trade making sense for anyone, including MTL</div></div>
Why?
It gets 3 draft prospects in Buffalo's system a year earlier than the 2025 pick so that those picks can help the Sabres sooner. Buffalo has to think that next year's team will be better than this year. so their pick next year would be at best in the teens (while still getting 3 draft picks plus possibly Harris and or Farrell from Montreal for a possible total of 5 players). There is some risk involved on both sides, but that is what GMs do in their jobs.

Whereas Dickinson is almost always top 5, because he's a far better skater (and Parekh certainly is not below average, so that's saying a lot) and really has no holes in his game.
I can definitely see how a Montreal fan would favor Parekh more than a Blues fan would, but I'm struggling to connect with underselling Dickinson. He might actually be the most high floor sure thing in the whole draft.</div></div>
For what it is worth, Craig Button recently did a mock draft on TSN trade deadline day and he had Parekh at #2 overall. To be fair, though, i think that it is the only time I have seen anyone put Parekh that high. His right handedness certainly favours him over some of the lefties, but I am not sure by how much in the NHL teams' minds.

Giving VAN a discount
I do not think Montreal can expect to get that much for Savard in the offseason/next year. Maybe a first round pick with some retention closer to next year's trade deadline if he is playing well and is healthy. I cannot see a second round pick being added by Vancouver in any case.

Playoff push
Montreal gives up too much young depth on defence without getting guaranteed NHL players back in the first 2 deals and Meier and is a very good but not necessarily elite forward to add. Plus, as the Devils fan already said, it may not be a trade that New Jersey makes either.

New Jersey trades for an expring Kahkonen contract too. It seems that they have no plan for goaltending next year (Allen is not a starter and what they have in house is obviously not working). Are they going after Markstrom in the offseason or do they just not know what they want to do at all??

I do not love the trade, but to be fair, with Montreal getting back their 2nd round pick this year, it is pretty close to getting a late first round pick. I would like to see Winnipeg throw in a B or a C prospect rather than Tony Granato, who I am pretty sure is retired.... :).

One For One
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LeafsForLife</b></div><div>You make good points. Both are rookies, and while Nemec (as far as I know) has been playing sheltered minutes, Knies has played with seemingly everyone on every line this season. I understand your point about the draft picks, and the optics wouldn't be great, but Knies (the 2021 #57 pick) has scored at the same pace as Beniers (the 2021 #2 pick)</div></div>
Knies has scored at the same rate as Beniers this year (which is a worse year for Seattle than last year). But let's not forget that Beniers won the Calder last year by putting up pretty good numbers (24G and 33A) on a team that does not have Matthews, Marner or Nylnader to pad the stats. If Knies puts up number like Beniers' rookie year stats then <strong>maybe</strong> a Nemec for Knies trade is more reasonable. Until then it would not be a good trade one for one in my opinion.

One For One
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LeafsForLife</b></div><div>What am I missing here?
Knies is playing on the Leafs first line, Nemec has been a healthy scratch (with Dougie on LTIR).
Nemec has up to 3.25 million in performance bonuses in his contract.
Given the circumstances, I fail to see why Nemec would be more valuable than Knies.
I'm not trying to be insulting, can someone explain to me what you all know that I don't?</div></div>
Nemec plays RD, which is a valuable position and was a high draft pick. This year Nemec is averaging 0.40 points per game as a rookie defenceman. Knies is averaging 0.45 points per game playing on the 1st line with Matthews.
If you look at the numbers of Knies over the years he has not really lit it up at any level in his career (his best years in the minors (college and USHL) has been a point per game player, which is good but not phenomenal). So given his history and less than a half point per game playing on the Matthews line this year it actually seems kind of weird to me that some people think he is highly valuable. I really do not see how people could think he would be worth a RHD that was drafted 2nd overall.
I know that Knies was drafted 1 year earlier, but he was drafted at #57 while Nemec was #2 overall. Think about how you would feel if you were the fan of the team that traded their #2 overall pick straight up for a guy who was #57 overall the year before (and the guy at #57 has not put up great numbers)?

Mock Draft with Analysis
If Catton falls outside the top 10 I would hope Montreal does everything possible to move up in the draft and select him. Take the Winnipeg pick + a young defenceman and another prospect to get him.
Catton + Dach + Lindstrom could be a great 2nd line for Montreal for a long time in my opinion.

The whole Kotkaniemi offer sheet situation has worked out poorly for everyone involved. Carolina got a bust in Kotkaniemi and Montreal tried to compensate by getting Dvorak (which I mistakenly thought at the time was not a bad acquisition) and he turned into a bust as well. Looks like Arizona might be the only team coming out of it with a decent return.

I had a brief back and forth with some Hurricanes fans that believe Kotkaniemi is a "play driver" and although his offensive numbers are low, he gets a lot of "tertiary assists" that do not show up on the score sheet ...........
You cannot just find a center who averages 0.35 points per game just anywhere y'know!

ALLEN TO PHILLY PLUS OFFSEASON ZEGRAS TRADE
I think the general consensus is that the 2025 draft is supposed to be a bit deeper than this year's draft, so I would not want Montreal trading their first round pick next year (and the Wiinipeg pick this year as well) to get #11 in this year's draft. There is a decent chance that Montreal's 2025 pick position is better than #11, so the trade could backfire on Montreal (trading a potential top 10 pick in a deeper draft in 2025 for a #11 pick in this year's draft).
I know Montreal should be better next year, but there is no guarantee (see Ottawa and Buffalo expectations for this year compared to what actually happened).
I also think Montreal might be able to get more for Savard.

Draft day dream
As you said, trading the first overall pick is extremely rare. I doubt Chicago’s does it.
I would not be 100% sure Montreal does this trade either. If they had #4 there is a pretty good chance that Demidov or Lindstrom would be available (as Levshunov is likely a top 3 pick) and I am curious as to whether they think the difference between either of them and Celebrini is still Roy + Struble + Winnipeg’s first. It’s an interesting question though.
