Reshaping The Defence
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>If you are moving out Brodie to improve your D core, that tells me Brodie is not a 5 million defenseman.
If Brodie's contract is under water, he's worth a late round pick tops.
His 7.5 million real salary also is a downer that needs to be paid for.</div></div>
Brodie is still a good top 4 defenceman, but Treliving likes bigger bodies who can throw hits. There must be some team out there that has a need for a Brodie in their top 4.

Brodie will be fine to start the season. As for the price, a 2nd or 3rd is good value, especially for teams looking for a veteran defenceman to help make the playoffs. That's probably not Anaheim.

Young, cheap, on good deals, cost controlled. Both have size. That's gonna cost quite a bit.

Treliving Deals
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>How is he going to sign long-term in Anaheim? WE aren't offering him $9 million. And if we thought that we'd like to pay him that, we could just wait until next summer to offer it to him. There's no rush to pay a high price for a rental even if he's going to sign a new contract with us -- what's he going to do, help us finish in 25th place instead of 28th? Seriously, do you really think that the value of having Nylander one season early is worth our best RW, never mind the draft picks?!?!?</div></div>
If any team desires to sign Nylander long-term it would be advantageous to bring him in a year early. And with the cap going up in a few years paying someone with the talent and productivity of Nylander is worth it. 9.5 million a year for Nylander will be a great contract in 2025.
Smart and ambitious teams make these types of bets all the time. Is Anaheim smart and ambitious? I don't know. But acquiring draft picks year after year and tanking year after year doesn't lead a team to the playoffs. The moment will come to trade those picks for established young stars.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>I would consider trading 7 or 8 years of Troy Terry for 7 or 8 years of William Nylander, depending on their respective cap hits, but I'm not entertaining for one minute exchanging Troy Terry with 7 or 8 years of team control for 2 years of Nylander, never mind the hilarious seconds. And adding them IS hilarious.</div></div>
The basis of the trade is that Nylander signs long term in Anaheim. The two 2nds are thrown in because Nylander is the better player, and he's almost the same age.

The Trade Is One For One
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rage44</b></div><div>Sure there are players that can continue at a high level late in their career. But many drop off just the same.
Notable difference in Pavelski's game is it was NEVER based on great speed. FWD vs D is also a big difference.</div></div>
Josi is similar in many ways. He is not like Erik Karlsson. He uses his head more than his feet to get points. He has no injury history. He's a big body defender, really a unicorn in the league. I don't see Nashville trading him soon, but the point of the trade is to show what the leafs would look like with a number 1 defenceman.

Josi is fantastic. But paying him until he turns 38 seems like poor cap management.</div></div>
Age doesn't effect the great players as much as people think. Look at what Pavelski did at age 38 this year.

Nothing is a guarantee in sports. What I know from reading some articles is that Matthews wants to stay a Leaf, at short-term but a high cap hit. I think a deal gets done. But if talks break down he'll most likely would want to be traded to California.

If he's being traded, which is highly unlikely, it would be to one of the California teams.

Too much term and $$$$ for Josi. Rather just have Marner for two years.</div></div>
Without a true number 1 defenceman the Leafs are never winning anything. Josi is that.

I've looked at the Flames cap situation and they can afford it. Both Backlund and Zadorov are UFAs at the end of next season. That's 9 million off the books. And if Wolf turns out to be a star they can move on from Markstrom's 6 million cap hit.
And there are other options as well. The Flames don't have a bad contract on their books apart from Coleman.

Incredibly debatable take. If you think your player was so much better you wouldn't be trading him</div></div>
Nylander wants and deserves a big raise. And the Leafs can't afford it. Simple as that. If JT's contract wasn't on the books for two more years then the team would look to bring him back.

Dunn is RFA. Also, Marner is young, and Seattle has cap space so they can sign him to an extension next year very easily. So they'll likely have him for ten years.

Connor has 3 years left on his deal at a great cap hit. He has way more value than Nylander.
Again, in this trade, the Jets are trading for a rental.
