Fixing The Defense

FTS man, they refused to trade him for Horvat and Landy in the past.
You think they are going to downgrade for Jarnkrok. :laugh
Plus…NTC</div></div>
Liljegren is a cheaper and younger defenceman, with potential to grow, he's the centerpiece of the trade going to Boston.

I dont understand the Domi move
I agree, there is a logjam in the top 6 and an identity crisis in the bottom six. I guess they expect Kampf to produce more offensively? That would be a mistake because it's clear he is a defensive specialist. Neither Knies nor Domi will fit in well on a line with Kampf, and the presence of Reaves on the 4th line negates that line from being an effective shutdown line.
I don't think Treliving and Keefe were on the same page at the start of free agency.
The only way I could see it working is with a Nylander trade that brings in a top 2 defenceman, which means there is room for both Knies and Domi in the top six.

Nylander is younger. And I think talent wise Nylander is more gifted. So that's why a 2nd was added.

Leafs Get Beefier
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JK74</b></div><div>At the risk of sounding like a broken record, once again the Hawks decline. They're not flipping draft assets for a player they don't need. As it is, they're already going to be waiving forwards heading into the season. This is not a year where they're playoff hopefuls, so why would they spend a 3rd round pick on a veteran?</div></div>
Jarnkrok is a proven NHLer who can stay on past the trade deadline because he has three years left at a cheap cap hit. The hawks can easily recoup picks by trading Hall, Perry, etc at the trade deadline.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HShockey</b></div><div>The defence is elite, but besides AM and JT the offence is Swiss cheese</div></div>
Marner and Nylander last year = 186 points.
Necas and Dube = 116 points.
That's only a 70 point drop off, and in exchange you get Hanifin and Pesce, two top four defencemen, not to mention Marner and Nylander will cost 22+ million to keep around.

Nylander To Buffalo
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>C'mon, that's such a silly argument you presented. If Bertuzzi, Domi and Samsonov could be resigned.....why aren't they?
What else would Bertuzzi say, "I have no intention to remain a Leaf past this season.." Don't be so gullible to believe what a player, coach or GM says in front of a microphone..
But why do you think Nylander can get such a haul? Teams trying to make the playoffs, aren't giving up great futures for a rental .
Still the point is, the Leafs who hope to go on a Cup run, are better off with Nylander than without him. Look at the Leafs cap next season. They could certainly afford to match any offer from any other team, but should they? I don't think so.</div></div>
Bertuzzi and Domi are waiting for the cap to go up before they extend with the Leafs. They're just making a wise business decision, like Matthews just did, which means that's the culture of the current Leafs unfortunately. Follow the leader.
As for Nylander and Leafs playoff hopes, this team isn't good enough to go on a long playoff run WITH or WITHOUT Nylander. So the smart long-term approach would be to trade the guy for picks and prospects and load up in 2025 when JT comes off the books and the cap rises by 8-10 million. Treliving will have 25-30 million to reshape the roster and build a whole new blueline.

Nylander To Buffalo
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>As any knowledgable hockey would know, the Horvat and Nylander situations were completely different. NEVER (proof me wrong) has a top contending team allowed a star player to negotiate a contract with another team one full year from his contract expiring. Canucks were out of the playoff race, and he traded at TDL.
I'm surprised you didn't trade Bertuzzi, Domi, Klingberg, and Samsonov. They are all upcoming UFAs and would collect assets at TDL
Playoff contending teams often trade for upcoming UFA to make them strong for playoff push knowing they have no chance of resigning them. Why are so many obsessed with Nylander, thinking is in such a unique situation. He isn't. Besides it's a lousy trade for the Sabres giving up a possible lottery pick and more in the hope of signing Nylander.</div></div>
Bertuzzi, Domi, and Samsonov can all be re-signed. Bertuzzi has said he wants a long term deal with the Leafs. As for Klingberg, his play will dictate what happens.
Nylander is a different case because he is demanding too much money and he can get back a haul, especially from a playoff bubble team like Buffalo that wants to make the playoffs.
Leafs can still go far in the playoffs without Nylander in their lineup. That's the luxury of having a talented roster.

Nylander To Buffalo
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>More silliness, trying to get value for a UFA. Leafs never had to pay high picks to acquire Bertuzzi, Domi, Klingberg, Samsonov and others. But somehow you want the Sabres to pay a premium.
Sorry these are just silly scenarios. By the way the Leafs will keep Nylander for this season's Cup run. Whether or not he resigns with the Leafs, meaningless at this time. And if he doesn't resign, the Leafs will just spend that cap on other players.</div></div>
Teams trade for UFAs to subsequently sign all the time. Islanders gave the Canucks a 1st and a good forward to get Horvat last year.
It's a mistake to hold onto Nylander. I think Treliving learned from his recent experiences in Calgary. He's either getting re-signed or traded before the deadline.

Wow, I just thought they were cheap depth pieces. The core of this trade for the Leafs is the prospect and the 1st.

But hey, let's not forget how fast you abandoned the treliving draft stuff</div></div>
He stood out when I watched Vegas so I assumed he was a top 4 defenceman.
As for Treliving's drafting, it's surprising he didn't draft a quality big defenceman in Calgary, but then again, he signed and traded for those guys so he didn't feel the need to.
