Trading A Couple of 1sts Plus Other Smart Trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Marner has never been a 100 point winger. And likely he won't be close to his points playing without Matthews, Nylander and Tavares on the leagues top 3 PP.
OK, the Leafs don't have to give heim away......just like the other 190 upcoming UFAs in July 2025, but there is NO reason for teams to pay for so much for Marner especially when Marner doesn't even play to his current contract.</div></div>
100 point Selke nominated wingers aged 27 and under aren't available via trades or free agency very often, if at all. Teams have all the reason in the world to trade for him. And Marner does play up to his current contract in the regular season.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Well Marner and Tavares aren't long term Leafs. I'm surprised that Leafs did sign Nylander mid seasons especially to an eight year contract.
I'll agree with it might be best for the Leafs to trade Marner instead of keeping him as their "own UFA". Of course are "going for it" again in 24/25.
But the point is 99% of the Marner trades are so one sided in favour of the Leafs.</div></div>
Marner is a 100 point winger in his prime. The Leafs aren't just going to give him away for free.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>And Guentz l is going to be about 2 million cheaper AAV.
Between Goal scoring, showing up in the playoffs, and leaving enough cap room for a good bottom 6 player as well as costing nothing to acquire, I'm taking Guentzel 8 days a week.</div></div>
Yes, but there are 32 teams, some with lots of cap space and big ambitions, and adding a player like Marner after missing out on Guentzel and Reinhart is a good compensation prize.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Sorry, I disagree, Guentzel is just as good defensively and almost matches Marner PPG.
If Marner is so superior why are so intent are trading him? Remember there are 190 potential UFA in summer of 2025. Teams aren't racing to trade these guys, but it seems like so many Leaf fans think they are entitled to UFA compensation.(yes one year away.</div></div>
Leafs already are paying big contracts to two forwards in Matthews and Nylander long-term, so it makes no sense to hold onto Marner when they have other areas in the roster to fill. But a team like Utah can use a player of his calibre. And Marner will waive in a trade to get that 8th year which he won't be able to get if he walks to UFA next year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Guntzel and Stamkos are two others for free..</div></div>
Stamkos is much older, and Guentzel doesn't have the 100 point ceiling that Marner has. Guentzel is a great goal scorer and playoff performer but Marner is a better playmaker and better defensively.

Like Knies? They already have a younger version of Crouse...
The numbers reported by LeBrun? Those were random guesses...
Bert's going to get 4.5 to 5.25 and Domi 3-4... Which I'm fine paying for what those 2 bring</div></div>
Knies is great, but why not have two big scoring power forwards?
And I just find a lot of flaws in Bertuzzi and Domi. Bertuzzi can hardly skate. And Domi had 9 goals last year. You want to pay 4 million a year for the next five years for that? Plus they don't kill penalties. And they are just not big enough. If the Leafs are going to succeed playing Berube's North-South hockey then they need big wingers who can deliver crushing hits and be a menace along the boards.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Currently Marner is 9th highest player in the league. Hard pressed to think he is the 9th best WINGER in the league. Again, why do Leaf fans think other teams are trading cheap assets for Marner when in this case Utah just keeps it's cheap assets and sign a just as good UFA as Marner.
Even by your post the Leafs have signed 5 UFAs...and didn't give up anything to obtain them. But somehow the Leafs get assets for an upcoming UFA in Marner</div></div>
Marner and Reinhart are the best available wingers this offseason, one is available via free agency, the other via trade. A team like Utah with an ambitious new owner may want to land a big fish.

Marner is worth that in the regular season, and with the cap jumping multiple times in upcoming seasons it is by no means an awful overpay.

An the Shea Weber isn't needed to have as the NHL pays for his contract, not Utah</div></div>
I doubt Pesce will sign with the Leafs or any U.S. free agent for that matter. Some other team will overpay him.
Crouse is what the Leafs need, a big power forward who can score.
And I don't want Bertuzzi and Domi back, especially since they're asking for a long term contract at crazy money. No thanks.

Dallas can make additional trades in the offseason to make the cap work. That's my understanding anyways.

I don't know why people think Devils window is closing.
In 2022-23, we were youngest 100-point team in 14 years. And youngest to reach second round.
Our core guys are still here, all 20-27 years old.
Our GM has said many times, he will not be buying expensive rentals. They are building something to last years to come.
Neither of these deals make any sense for NJD.</div></div>
Marner isn't a rental. Any team acquiring him this summer will only do so if an extension is agreed beforehand.
But I agree the Devils don't make sense for a Marner trade. I think he's going to a Western team.
