How are the Kings in a better position after this trade?

Besides the fact of how good Carter is, he has the experiace and veteran leadership qualities too. He's won two Stanley Cups with the Kings. And not only that, Kempe isn't ready to take the second center position. He did well filing in for Carter, but he hasn't put up the numbers Carter can and will.</div></div>
Well, not to worry. Carter is not going anywhere, but if they don't do something this year in the playoffs, I think you'll start to see some guys moved next off season....Carter maybe being one of them.

Well. Trading Carter is not the problem with it. It's trading Carter to Vegas and then only getting Tatar for him.

This team is in cap hell
Even worse trouble if we are giving Fantenberg $1.5 mil for 2 years. :-)
In my opinion, the Kovi signing was an effort to to show Doughty they are serious about going for it, which I think they are in earnest, but our window has probably closed. There were no other options there without moving Kempe, Vilardi or 1st rd picks. You can always maneuver around the cap next year. Goal is make the playoffs. Once in, ANYTHING can happen.

All we need. Pt 2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>Hey if you are okay with that then all the power too you. They did win two cups and I won't take anything away from those teams, they were really good. Watching Willie Mitchell hoist the cup was really awesome.
That being said, its going to be a long dark road when you're spending years waiting for those former greats to retire. Within 2 months of Doughty's extension kicking in you'll have something like 58 million tied to players over the age of 30. And many of those will be for more than 4 years.
Its not a good thing.</div></div>
In a hard cap world, every team that is successful are/is/will be in the same boat. Capitals, Kings, Penguins and Blackhawks (last 4 cup winners). Winnipeg and Toronto will be joining them in the next few years. It's not the salary or players. It's the cap. Would you have suggested the Kings said to all these players "Thanks for the cup, now don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out"? How do you sell that to a fan base? Three of those players are HOFers. Kopitar, Doughty and Quick. Brown is a guy with 1000 games played in a Kings uniform. Those 4 make up 32.6 million of it.
I HATE the inability of teams to get out of a bad contract under the HARD cap without the painful buyout process with affects on the cap. Let a team buy out (1) contract a year that can erase the hit against the cap?

All we need. Pt 2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>If players just stayed great as they aged, Gretzky would still be dominating the league. The game is getting faster every year and LA is getting older and slower, they are a doomed team. They may make the playoffs again once or twice but if they get caught in a matchup against a fast teal they are done. Just like when Vegas completely overwhelmed them in the playoffs. Made Kopitar look like a pylon. The Kings are done and there is absolutely no way to change that either since the contracts they have are so bad.</div></div>
Ok. Every team is done at some point. I'll take the 2 cups and reward the core that brought them to us. And so you know...Vegas did not overwhelm us. All 4 games were VERY close.

Trade for Panarin..Just spit balling.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tkecanuck341</b></div><div>Not going to happen. The Kings would be hugely over the cap next season, and they'd be getting rid of their only NHL-ready forward prospect that would be able to fill a roster spot with a six-figure contract.
The Kings would include a 1st or Vilardi, but not both. They might include both if Columbus was willing to take back Phaneuf's contract.</div></div>
You could move Muzzin in an additional deal to say Toronto, Philadelphia or Montreal for their 1st? Again just throwing out ideas. Reality is we are probably done.

God I'd love Panarin, but as Logan said above. Kings would be hard pressed to afford him on a resign.
It would cost them
Toffoli
Vilardi
1st
and we would have to move out a defenceman (Muzzin/Martinez or Phaneuf)
Just too much to give up unless CBJ took back Phaneuf as part of the deal.

That is tempting to get rid of Phaneuf's contract. He actually played very well for the Kings when he came over, but who knows if he can sustain it. I love Clague. He is a solid top 4 D-Man. Maybe a top 2 pairing. You never really know until they do it, but that is what my eyes and gut tell me.
Clague, Phanuef for Patches and a 3rd. If we resign Patches. You keep the pick.
I'd think long and hard about that, however I think the Kings are done right now. Maybe a small move here and there.

What would JT look like
If we landed JT. You couldn't pay him more than 10mil. You have to convince Doughty and JT to the 10Mil/year range. I don't know if they would do that or not. If not, you move on. If you can do that, then you have to move a few contracts, which for me means a combination of any of the following: Toffoli, Pearson, AMart, Muzzin or Phaneuf. If JT wants to come to LA, You make the numbers work.

They will qualify him and either not match a higher offer (get a 2nd round pick) or do a sign and trade for a pick or cheaper asset.
