Honestly, my approach here is the Canes desperation to find a goalie. I figured with their Defense actually being decently good, Sammy might actually play better when there's less high scoring chances to face him. It's a one year deal so they're not tied down with him, and they get Bert and his style to help in the playoffs. Abruzzee is a decent Centre prospect. Will he oan out to be another KK, perhaps not but the combination of all the pieces I thought would warrant a conversation and a basis to a potential deal.

This should be fun
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mikearky</b></div><div>Tavares as a kid had Leaf sheets and was coming home. So explain why he waives for Columbus?</div></div>
Because the Leafs were beginning to get tired of their Tavares sheets taking up space in their closet when their were nice, newer sheets that they could use.
So Tavares does them a solid (I think his contract is set up as mostly signing bonus. If true, the Leafs pay him and he heads to Columbus to help boost that team with Johnny Hockey). Laine isn't highly thought of by the coach so a change of scenery is made. In this case they take back a player who can immediately hop into their Top 6.
With Nylander picking up the pace heading into his Prime, Laine should pick up more goals with the Leafs. If it's not Nylander setting him up it'll be Marner. The result is two deadly snipers in Laine and Matthews on two separate lines. On the PP, the shot could come from either side of the ice instead of predictably Matthews. I think Laine would find himself again.
OR.... It's all make believe and I had fun passing the time making this.

I wasn't impressed with either player up until recently
It seems that Domi has found himself a bit more on the third line with Robertson and Jankrok. I have noticed him more in a good way since they've settled in and developed some chemistry.

Without a 1st line center (Lindholm) Nylander certainly wouldn't be extending in Calgary. In addition Calgary would have absolutely no interest in swapping Vladar for a more expensive goalie you want to dump.
As I've said many times before you Leafies need to think about the other team's needs too. Trades have to work for both teams not just your Leafs.</div></div>
Vladar is 4.4M as his contract is two years. Sammy's is 3.7M and the. They can resign or move on. So technically I'd argue that the Flames are saving 700K on the deal.
I'm sure form something like this to take place there would be talks of an extension. Perhaps Nylander coming in allows Hanifin to resign long term etc.

Honestly, I haven't been that impressed with him as I had thought I would be. Robertson (while healthy) is proving to have a similar style and I think could put up as many or more points on a second line.
Trenin would be a great addition to the third line with Domi and Jankrok who seem to have good chemistry already. Jankrok is also more diverse in terms of being defensive and capable of putting a few in the back of the net up and down the lineup and on special teams. Plus the lower cap hit and longer term is the reason for Bert being moved over Jankrok.

Changing things up
Thought process here is that Nylander is doing well and a name that has been mentioned several times with trade talk. Dubas likes Willy and Willy, Dubas. The Leafs finally understand after advancing to round two last season that they need more than just 4-5 skilled forwards to win in the playoffs. Accari played very well for them and is a consistent physical force by racking up the hits each game. Smith isn't as young as Nylander nor as skilled but can still produce and at 5M for 2 years I think it's a fair contract and easy to part with next year. It also still fills Willy's offensive void somewhat. Not to mention Smith's playoff experience (And Accari's).
I like Brodie and what he brings. It's just an unfortunate cap situation and again a need for toughening up that back end. Hakanpaa adds size and the much needed shutdown D-Man role (replaced what Schenn brought to the table). Hakanpaa can also eat big minutes if required. Dallas gets a little more Mobile on the backend which is the enticement for them (not too mention the retained salary makes it easier.for.them.to.do this deal).
As you also mentioned, the Leafs also restock some of their draft stock as they're shelves are beginning to look a little bare in some places.
While I don't think they are as good (on paper) as a Regular Season team (compared to keeping Nylander) I think they become a more complete team come playoff time.

Change of Scenery
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JaredOfLondon</b></div><div>Garbage nylander trade, not even a secondary peice in actual value</div></div>
How? From Habs perspective or the Leafs?
Leafs fans believe Nylander should fetch an out to lunch return while other non leafs fans are the other way and figure he's a dime a dozen.
Habs get a good scoring player in his prime to work alongside their young superstars. The Leafs get some manageable grit and size with Anderson, a presence on the blue line who won't shy away from conflict, will stick up for team mates, not cost an arm and a leg and is young. Plus they refill some holes in their draft picks. Personally I believe it's a pick or prospect shy of being even or a little in the Leafs favor, but I know if I had added another 2nd or 3rd someone would complain. So it's a alight edge to the Habs but both teams get what they need/want and are happy.

Taking from another trade
Unless Philly's doctors are miracle workers, I highly doubt Muzzin puts on a pair of skates let alone play top 4 minutes.
This also adds to the Leafs cap space conundrum by adding a player to their roster. Muzzin doesn't apply to the Leafs cap hit thanks to LTIR. If not for this, I could see the Leafs trading for an older player. It fits their style...

Can't recall what outlet (Gloves Off Hockey, Hockey Feed, etc.) But one post claimed the Ducks are currently only offering 3-4M per year. I figured a 3 year 5.5M "Prove you're a consistent star" contract would be sufficient on both sides. Over those three years he'll be top 6 on the Leafs. Bunting even looked impressive and got a pay raise out of it. I guess 6M would look better but would leave less wiggle room to work with in terms of cap for any injuries that may arise throughout the year.

Cap Compliant
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>soft_dump_in_the_corner</b></div><div>Dear lord that Columbus trade is awful.
You're trading:
a 27-year-old point-per-game 40-goal scorer
a 4/5D
for:
a 30-year-old 40-point 3C,
a 4D (yes he played higher...but that was on last year's 31st-place team)
and a 2nd round pick <em>next year</em>
Let alone the whole "Jenner defending Babs" thing, I'm sure that'd go over great with Marner et al.</div></div>
Jenner brings grit to the table and is very well like in Columbus hence the slight overpayment you pointed out. Whether he was asked by management to back Babcock as his coach at the time or he chose to defend him on his own will is irrelevant to on ice performance.
Peeke brings a shutdown style role to their Defense. Adding some much needed Hits to their lineup. I only slotted him with Reilly as Reilly enjoys jumping up in the rush and Peeke would essentially remain at home to cover.
With regards to the 2nd being next year... Currently the Leafs earliest pick next year is a 4th round. So this just adds some draft capital for next year's draft.
As for Nylander, I would suspect he'd resign, perhaps a 5 year deal for 9 maybe 9.5M and play alongside Johnny G. Being in a market like Columbus, the expectations would be lessened and the harsh media that he faces in TO would be drastically lessened allowing him to relax a little. Lilly is added as a younger RHD to replace Peeke in the exchange.

Off season moves
I thought Arizona would be paying Weber's contract. Hence the idea to move him and save them much needed money.
Douglas is a big boy. 6'9 245lbs with potential. To me that is someone the Leafs could and should work with. Even if he only amounts to a 4th line C, standing him in front of the net would screen any goalie in the league and cause frustration for the other team to try and move him.
I could see Rlbertson getting the chance for more ice time with AZ which should better showcase his skill set. Der-A would also have a better chance at cracking the lineup or even seeing some NHL time due to injuries. Both have good scoring potential.
What would you deem to be a fair trade for McBain?

The 2nd is conditional. If he remains healthy he's a solid D Man and worth the 2nd. If he gets bit with the injury bug again and fails to play in 70 games the deal is a 4th and 7th. Sens want to get better. They have the cap space, can extend Nylander next season if they want, and Nylander is still young to be a part of their core. DJ Smith is familiar with him and he'll get top line or second line minutes every night instead of his current situation of up and down between second and third.
Leafs get what they need out ofnit: cap relief, draft picks, back up goalie with experience, and a Mikheyev replacement that's younger and RFA. Plus personally since I believe Nylander is soft, Leafs shouldn't have trouble playing against him.
