TDL - Karlsson Toews Lafferty
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Shibbal18</b></div><div>The Sabres aren't getting involved</div></div>
That's the cheapest way to weaponize $2M of unused cap space you'll get. Think about it... even if you accepted a league minimum contract that would be UFA at the end of the season from another team for a 4th round pick (plausible, right?) you'd be paying $750K of real cash for that pick. In this case, Buffalo would only be paying $220K for the same pick.
Think it through a little further. Could you now package that 4th RD pick to move the Vinnie Hinostroza contract to a team like Arizona (or another basement team) at the deadline? There is over $550K real cash owing on that contract, so BUF would actually save over $300K profit on the transaction. Just an example.

Karlsson 2023-24
Very plausible trade based on what some of the most plugged-in journalists in hockey are reporting, including Elliott Friedman, Frank Seravalli, Bob Stauffer, Jason Gregor, Darren Dreger, and others. Definitely more plugged in than the Sharks fans commenting. Bouchard is the key piece and Bourgault is a blue-chip prospect. Both could be the foundation of the rebuild in SJ.
"At age 23, Erik Karlsson had 37 5v5 points in 1621 TOI (1.37 P/60). That's a very high production rate for a defender at that age. At age 21, Evan Bouchard had 31 5v5 points in 1308 TOI (1.42 P/60)." - @NHL_Sid
Could substitute Yamamoto for Puljujarvi if SJ feels they can trade him next year for a pick as he has a year left. My guess is they would prefer to gain the cap space for nothing after this season, or sign Puljujarvi as a project at a lower AAV.

Huge overpay for Chychrun. And I don't think they'd play him on his off wing. Maybe switch Ceci with Kulak and remove at least one first rounder. IMO that would still be an overpay. Don't think Chychrun is that much better than Kulak or Ceci. Not enough of an upgrade for all the assets.

That defense is way worse than what they have now. They'd get shredded in the playoffs. The Oilers will not trade Nurse. Full stop. Anything after that is irrelevant.

That's a little rich for Toews for the Oilers... It's been reported the Oilers have an offer in the can to Chicago that includes Puljujarvi, Foegele, a 1st round pick and a prospect not named Broberg or Holloway for Patrick Kane.
For Toews I think you'd have to replace the 1st with a 4th or 5th, or a prospect. The Oilers would still have to have a 3rd team pickup half the $5.25M to make the money work.

Dont wasted

Cause they get the Superstar Defender every SC-Team had (Makar, Hedman, Carlson), a reliable defense Anchor in McCabe, the Center for the 3rd Line and a Winger for the 2nd (Bonino and Domi) and Depth for the 3rd or 4th Line (Lafferty). Yes for Picks and some Talents. But nobody knows what Kind of Player they will be. And the Oilers wasted so many years of McD and Drai. At some Point you have to show your Superstars, that you as a Franchise do everythink for Succes. Idmf you don't, they're gone. Sooner than later.</div></div>
The money doesn't work and you don't even have a full roster. Won't win in playoffs like that. Bonino is too old and slow, and Domi is overrated. Holloway will be better next year than Domi at 1/3rd the cost. Switch Bouchard with Ceci in the Karlsson deal and kill your Chicago deal. Just get Lafferty for a 2nd rounder. Better depth and better for the future.

Not at 18% retained. He'll have to retain more to get that return. Great player, but he's still the biggest salary dump in in the league.

Oilers pass. That's an overpay for Garland, who's not worth the salary. Also think there's no chance LA and Edm make a trade while they're battling for a playoff spot in the same division.

Or are you just saying the retention on EK is too much?, It's easily the biggest hurtle for a EK trade with basically ANY team...the only way a contending team could aquire him is if there's huge retention. I've read 3-4mil needing to be held for oilers to aquire him, so I went with that..</div></div>
You're almost 5 million over the cap.

Ceci and Barrie are not cap dumps. Both have term and would generate a return in any trade, and are potential flips if SJ wants to trade them for picks down the road. Puljujarvi is obviously a dump as is Benning... Benning wouldn't make the Oilers starting D even after this trade... he'd be the 7th D behind Desharnais. The Sharks will have to absorb some level of retention and take contracts back to make the money work for any contender. As great as Karlsson is, at $11.5M he's still at least a $1.5 to $2M overpay. And only that low because he's having a stellar year. Average his performance over the past 3 years and the overpay is even higher. That affects the trade value.

Trade Deadline - Karlsson Toews Lafferty
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HockeyIsMyPassion61</b></div><div>Detroit's not retaining 2.125M on Toews for a lousy 2023 5th round pick, We only have 2 retention slots open. And Bertuzzi gets one and someone else perhaps Maatta the other.
And Mile Grier already said he's only retaining 18% on EK65. And Edmonton is the very last team that should be spending those kind of assets on an extremely expensive Dman like Karlsson.</div></div>
Fair point regarding Toews retention, there are many other non-playoff teams that would love to take a nearly free pick. The cap space is irrelevant to Detroit, or Anaheim, or Arizona, etc because it's only for the remainder of this season. More importantly, there is only about $220,000 of real cash owed on the contract... which obviously is far less than the over 2M of cap.
Regarding Karlsson, it's a buyers market... what the GM wants isn't necessarily what he will get. No teams can afford an $11M dman... or even a $9.5M one. They won't disrespect him by trading him to a bottom feeder. Edmonton is EXACTLY the kind of team that should pickup Karlsson. Adding him would make them a stronger contender for the cup.

Don't think the Sharks get a better offer than this from a legit contender. Zero cap dumps genius. All 3 players make your team right now. Ceci is a value contract with multi-year term and becomes your 1RD. Barrie is one of the best PP QBs in the league... not much of a downgrade from Karlsson in that regard, and is your 2RD all day. He's currently playing 2RD on a GOOD team. Once Meier is gone, Foegele likely plays ahead of Bonino as 2LW. Then 3 first round picks on-top for only 40% retention. That is a good return for a guy who wants out of SJ (specifically to a contender) and has a 10-team no-trade clause kicking in this summer.

Easily the most realistic posting I've seen so far. Love the Kastelic acquisition, though I think you'd have to add a 2nd rounder. The 4th pays for them taking Foegle's salary, 2nd rounder pays for Kastelic. I'd still make the deal.

Yep. That's why they may trade him at the deadline, less $$ impact for Seattle, they still get a good backup for Grubauer. Driedger won't want to stay long-term as a backup. Seattle gets a legit, young top-6 hometown winger.

I honestly don’t think either one of them will have much luck cracking the lineup. The fact that Klefbom is still even in question is not a good thing. He can’t ever say he’s finished playing, he’s obligated to try because of his contract. He did say his surgeon thinks there’s a good chance he never plays again and if he did have a shoulder replacement it would be stupid to try.</div></div>
According to Klefbom, his doctor said the surgery was very successful, and there's a reasonable chance he could play again but he couldn't tell him definitively yet. By July they will have a much better idea of how the shoulder has healed as he will be at the point of beginning serious rehab. Don't forget this quote from Klefbom in April, "I’m just going to do everything I can in my power to be ready when the puck drops. If it’s in Seattle or Edmonton, that’s not really up to me.” He'll make the right decision based on all the best medical info, but make no mistake, he wants to play.
Holland has to plan for the worst while hoping for the best, but he's been getting weekly updates from Klefbom's camp. I will assume he plays until Klefbom says otherwise.

We can only wait and see about Klef, but "likely" is premature. Why would Seattle take a winger who's played 7 NHL games (and none since those 7) with 0 goals and is a question mark to make the NHL over a puck-moving D with 93 NHL games? I think you are overestimating Benson's value. I think the Oilers would be happy if Seattle picked Benson. Much more trade value with Jones.

Not a horrible lineup... you just need to bury Turris in the minors, add a legit right-handed 3C, and get rid of Koskinen for an upgrade in net. Saad will likely cost more than 5M, especially for only 3 years.

Love that lineup. Would be awesome if they could pull it off, but I think it's a bit of wishful thinking. I think you got a smokin deal on just about every UFA you plugged in. Also think you significantly underpaid for Rakell. Anaheim will get more than that if they move him. Add a roster player or at least a blue-chip prospect... like Bear or Broberg.
Overall I think that line-up would cost you at least $2M more than you allocated and a good player/prospect. BUT... if Holland could find a way to move Koskinen, it just might be possible.
