Oilers 2021-22 Varlamov-Rakell-Getzlaf

why resign barrie when you have bouchard</div></div>
Barrie is consistently top 5 scoring D... how many times has Bouchard done it? I think he'll be great someday but not yet. Oilers need to be a contender now. Nurse took 5 years to become top pairing guy and he was a #7 overall pick. People who think Bouchard will immediately become a top pairing D need to do better research.

He did play well last year... struggled this year, but improving. You gonna bet on 40 year old Smith duplicating his amazing run again next year in a full 82 game sched? I'm not. IMO they have to be contenders next year, for that they need to flip Koski for top level goalie, and to do that they'll need to give up something from a position of strength. RHD.

Barrie is easily the best puck moving D on the team. Not even close. I like Bear but he's not a top-pairing D and never will be. Second pairing at best. I agree the Oilers will likely have to package Bear to move either Koski or Neal salary. Barrie-Larsson-Bouchard is better combo to win next year.

Possibilities for 2022
Hitching your wagon to a goalie who's only played an average of 11 games per season over the past 6 years and is .905? Not good enough if they want to be a legit contender. And sadly, you'd have to give up more in that trade to get it. No thanks.
Also think it will take more to get Getzlaf... likely 4M.

I like Ethan Bear, but he is not a top pairing defenceman. Never will be. Barrie is by far the best puck mover in the group. He has to be top pair to play with McDavid/Drai until Bouchard is ready... which may not be for 2-3 years. It took Darnell 5 years to get to top pairing and he was a #7 overall draft pick with better wheels. Oilers window opens next year... gotta win.

Don't think there's any chance they get Ullmark for 4M. Buffalo can & will overpay to keep him... likely 5 for 5. Too risky for Edm to do that.

Both too small. Oilers already have too many smurfs in top 9. I think they'll like for someone a bit bigger.

I agree, but there are other teams that will offer more. Guarantee the Oilers would offer 6M/4yrs. I suspect Grubauer will be willing to take a slight haircut to stay in Colorado... unless they win the cup.

Overpay for Rakell.. maybe remove Lavoie. Underpay for Buffalo to take Koskinen, and I doubt they want Stalock unless it's for the farm. Most importantly there's no taxi squad next year, so you're way over the cap.

Excellent post. Probably the most realistic numbers I've seen. Even with the farm team close, I can't imagine them carrying less than 2 in the press box. You also need some cash for injuries. Need to find a couple million in there somewhere. Agree with people suggesting they'll have to find a way to trade a middle 6 forward... or leave one unprotected for the expansion draft. It's the only way to make the numbers work.
If the Avs win the cup this year, there's no way all the free agents take a hometown discount. But at least they'd have a cup.

I don't think the Avs will only carry 20 players... need to add 3 more to fill the normal roster. No taxi squad next year. That'll cost 2-3M. Not sure where they'll find that money cause I think your salaries are pretty accurate to what they'll command. Might be able to get Makar for 8M. Be lucky to get Landeskog for 7M.
If they have to pick one position to sacrifice, I wonder if it's Grubauer? If Francouz is healthy and Dubnyk plays well down the stretch, maybe that's where they save their money. If they win the cup this year, there's no way they'll be able to sign all 3.

No taxi squads next year. Unless the Avs are going to carry less than the standard 23 players you're going to have to find a couple million somewhere for 3 more players. Gonna be tight. Grubauer might take 5.5 to stay with a cup contender, but he'll get offers from other teams for more. Landeskog might stay for 7.5 which would save you a mil, and maybe they get Makar for a hair over 8?? Just to beat what Chabot got in Ottawa. Still tough to fit.
But if they win the cup this year, they'll lose one of those guys... likely Grubauer.

Missed a spot... of course they protect Puljujarvi, still have space to protect he AND Archie. F: Nuge, McDavid, Puljujarvi, Rakell, Draisaitl, Yamo, Archie. D: Nurse, Klefbom, Barrie. G: Grubauer

The Avs are over the cap when Erik Johnson comes of LTIR and have to pay Landeskog and Makar next year and only have the 5M they're paying Saad to do it. May not have the space to pay Grubauer too. They really like Francouz @ 2M and have Dubnyk @ 2M. Welcome to flat cap world.

They need a backup when Miller retires, and they get a top 4 defender in Bear, and Marody would make their roster next year. #rebuild

Decent plan
Not a bad plan overall. Plausible. I like Kuemper and I think he may be on the market because I don't think he'll re-sign in Arizona and they'll want some return. Probably have to give up a 1st rounder or a player that will make their roster though to include Koski. I'd also prefer to spend an asset or 2 to move Neal's contract rather than a buyout that will hurt for many years. IMO Tatar's not a top line guy. Maybe 2nd line. He plays 3LW in Montreal. Little expensive for a small guy, but he can score. Oilers already have too many small guys. Not sure it's much of an upgrade over Kahun for 5x the price. Don't mind Bozak, though I'd prefer a guy like Getzlaf. Overall it would be an improved lineup over this year.

I think Lagesson would be close for them taking Neal. He's at least a 3rd pairing guy who can play PK on ANA. Rakell only has 1 year left... 1st round picks are highly valuable in a flat cap world. Might have to throw in another pick or prospect.

Summertime
Lost me at Rittich. Not the answer in goal. Won't get rid of Koskinen that easily either. Holloway not ready for top line. No way Tippett goes with 3 rookies in top 9 (Benson, McLeod). Don't think your lineup is better than the current one... might be good in 2022-23 though. Might be a little light in your salary expectations for UFAs Nuge and Larsson... a little heavy for RFA Yamo. And as RFA, Benson would be due a slight raise to qualify. Don't think there's any way the Oilers will have 10M in cap space nextr year. Not a bad post though.
