Thread:
Should MTL move down between 8 and 10
If Kent Hughes and Nick Bobrov don't want Michkov, MTL should trade down and draft one of Reinbacher/Dvorsky with a lower top 10 pick and add a late 1st/high 2nd.
Would WSH, DET or STL want to move up to draft the player they really want? WSH is interested in Michkov, and DET/STL have their eyes on Moore.
What would they give for MTL 5th overall pick?

I agree not drafting Smith or Michkov at 5 would be disappointing. If Smith is gone and MTL pass on Michkov, they better trade down a few positions. I wouldn't mind drafting one of Dvorsky or Reinbacher between 8-10 and add another late 1st/high 2nd.

I agree with Beck and Hutson, Beck could even go higher if he keep carrying his OHL team to the Memorial Cup. I even agree with Mesar too, but he's going to be better next season.
I think Slafkovsky should still be 3rd behind Cooley and Nemec. I knew from the start he wasn't going to be the best player in the draft, and it's fine because he'll be a monster on the ice.

The Athletics post lottery mock draft
According to NHL scouts :
Benson at 7 is too high.
Moore too high at 10.
Perreault will likely be drafted before Moore.
Barlow should go higher.
Honzek will probably go top 16.

SHARKIE'S TOP 64 2023 MOCK DRAFT - May Edition
If OTT wins the lottery, they keep the pick because it's top 5 protected.
I wouldn't mind Dvorsky at 6, but i could see MTL draft Michkov if Bobrov is 100% sure he's coming to the NHL in the next 3 years.
I agree STL would pick Moore over Reinbacher, but DET would probably pick Moore over ASP, even though my guess is they go for a sniper like Barlow or Sale.
MTL isn't drafting 17 anymore. They'll probably just pick Hrabal or Augustine with the late 1st.
Just because of size, i can't see But, Halttunen or Ritchie of 1st round. For the same reason, Brindley and Perron are probably falling even if they're more skilled.
Can't wait for the lottery tomorrow. It could change everything.

I would say he's more like Pacioretty, but with 25 goals seasons. Big streaky player not using his size enough.

If 12 win the first lottery, they can only climb 10 spots, getting the 2nd overall.
Then, if another team between 3 and 11 win the second lottery, they get 3rd because they can't pass the first winner.
Anaheim would stay first.

Lets attempt a mock with trades
Caufield is right handed, but play left wing. With him, Slaf, RHP and Farrell, MTL are set at LW.
With Suzuki and possibly Dubois at center, Dach would play RW, but MTL need another. I think that's one of the reason why MTL is reportedly interested in Yager.
If Smith is gone at 5, i could see MTL trading down with DET or STL. Detroit could secure Moore at 5, and MTL get 2 of Reinbacher/Wood/Leonard/Yager at 9 and 18.

I can promise you that between now and the Draft NO TEAM will trade a Top 10 Pick in the Bedard Draft for anything.
Finally I can assure you the trade as proposed in the OP makes ZERO sense for Washington and they will not do it or anything like it.</div></div>
So i'm a liar because i think 27 + 34 + 45 for 11 is value wise close to 17 + 37 + 69 for 8?

If the trade happens on the Draft floor it doesn’t matter if it’s not a Lottery pick any more, Top 10 picks are almost never traded in the modern NHL and when they are the price is much higher than you are suggesting.
As of 2018 only eight (8) trades involving a Top 10 pick had happened in the NHL since the adoption of the Salary Cap (no Top 10 picks have been traded since 2018 for picks alone and the trades that have happened have involved Star Players; Matt Duchene, Erik Karlsson, Alex DeBrincat, Oliver Ekman-Larson, etc. Certainly not Joel Edmundson - LOL).

No pick as low as the 8th pick (which the Capitals have in 2023) has been traded for any pick worse than 12th overall. And there is a huge difference between 12th and 17th overall. The last time such a trade happened was 2005 and the trade was 8th for 12th+49th+207th. It hasn’t happened since 2005 and it’s certainly not going to happen in THIS Draft.
You don’t have to like it but I’m not going to let you lie about it.</div></div>

I'd rather have Durzi than 3 years of Matheson while MTL is still rebuilding. Durzi is only 24, he would look really good with Guhle. His connection with Suzuki makes him more appealing than another equal player.
Matheson is the only MTL defenseman who ended up with a positive +/-. I hate that stat, but it still shows he's not only an offensive minded D. I think he would be really good with LA, and at 29 years old and 2.5M for the next 3 seasons, he fits their cup window perfectly.

Trade happens at the draft so it's not a lottery pick anymore. And if you're so sure a high pick is "much more" valuable, why did SJ trade 11 for 27, 34 and 45 in 2022? 2023 being a better draft is not an excuse because picks coming back would also be 2023. Would WSH do it? I don't know. But value wise, this trade make as much sense as the SJ trade in 2022.
Again, insulting people you don't know only shows how well you were raised. Kids these days...

LA need win now LHD, not a young develloping prospect.
Matheson 50% retained for Durzi makes more sense for both teams IMO.
LA only add 800K on their cap, and get the 2LD they need to win. MTL get a young top 4 RD who played 4 years with Suzuki in the OHL.

Schneider was fighting for 1G with Luongo, playing 30 games a season.
Hellebyuck is 1 year older, but he's a top 5 goalie in the league for the last few seasons. With an extension, his value would be close to Saros.
Kuemper won the Stanley Cup with Colorado the year after he was traded.
Saros didn't carry the Preds that much since they missed playoffs for the last 2 seasons. He's probably more top 10 than top 5 IMO. I wouldn't put him in the same category as Vasilevsky/Sorokin/Hellebyuck/Oettinger/Shesterkin. And teams will consider he's only 5'11.

Maybe you're right, but goalies usually don't get traded for much.
Schneider was considered a future talented 1G and was traded for a 9th overall pick in a weaker draft.
Kuemper was traded for a late 1st and 3rd, and had stats similar to Saros the 3 seasons before the trade.
Hellebyuck is going to be traded this summer. We'll see what a 1G is worth in 2023.
