GM OF THE YEAR
The problem with the Leafs has always been and will forever be depth and supplemental scoring. This mock up provides neither.
Bad free agency signings and ill use of the cap will destroy this team. Graves, Bunting and ROR at those cap hits scream trouble.
If available the leafs should target Soucy (max 3.5) and Bertuzzi (max 6) stabilize the team and address a lot of problems that plagued them this run.
Look for players that have low trade value and use that to your advantage. How much is Garland going to cost at most a 3rd if money is retained?
Move Murray for the Mrazek package and use that 2nd and your 1st next year with your prospects to make a splash at center. PLD seems like a longshot because the Jets want to compete but that package for Henrique half retained would be great especially if they can take the Muzzin LTIR as well.
Lastly take a chance on players with low value but high upside if they work in the given system, Monahan or Drouin would be solid at contracts no more than 2M
The leafs approach should be Depth with flexibility and the ability to roll different line combinations. Not throwing insane money at players that will not move that needle.

Breaking up the core 4
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OilersRule</b></div><div>To the point A - I think Leafs management should talk to Matthews and see what destinations he's interested in, allow the teams and his agent to talk and come to a contract before the trade occurs.
To the point B - Not having to overpay in free agency as a bidding war can be an advantage, and deal with existing contracts (like Calgary having to pay to ship Monahan) could be a positive for both teams, I still think LA would be a good fit, with guys like Durzi-Byfield-Clarke-Turcotte etc... and some picks. Doesn't really affect LA's core, but they get better by trading away futures.
Definitely could be interesting.</div></div>
If you are trading Matthews for guys like Durzi, Byfield, Clarke and Turcotte and some picks or a similar package your window to "win now" has undoubtedly closed with no true foresight on how long it will take to contend again. Turcotte and Clark are effectively nothing right now, Durzi has struggled and does not look like more than a fringe top 4 and Byfield has been solid but he's not Auston Matthews. If this is the return for a guy at his worst is an 85 point two way center you might as well prep for the tank again and move off Marner and Nylander as well

Breaking up the core 4
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hckeydude123</b></div><div>The Kings biggest problem right now is cap space. Trading away Kempe and Roy frees up about 9m in cap but getting Marner and Robertson is 13m in cap so they are basically taking on another 4m in cap. They only have about 7m in cap to sign a top 4 LHD and a starting goaltender so if you cut that down to only 4m to do so they would basically only get one or the other not both not to mention Roy leaving would leave big hole on the right side as well. Basically the defense would crumble apart taking on that much cap while creating another problem. So Kings would pass on this trade</div></div>
I think the kings look to offload that Petersen contract somehow. Maybe through picks or even taking on a ltir contract but that should work to alleviate any cap discrepancy to sign a goalie and d man

I think Roy is a very big piece in LA but you have to think with 1 year left and money tied up in the d core and the young guys coming in if management sees it that way. On the front of Vilardi and Kempe I completely agree the contract framework for both those guys is unreal. I was exploring a somewhat reasonable deal for a player of marners calibre. You cannot trade the guy for peanuts like most of the fanbase is

I definitely think a young RFA with a 60+ point ceiling, a bonafide top 4 defenceman and a 30 goalscorer signed through the next 3 seasons on a very team friendly deal garners a first round pick regardless of Marner being the other piece in the return

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OilersRule</b></div><div>I don't think Marner should be the guy that gets moved.
Matthews as an unknown for re-signing is more of a risk, imagine trading away Marner, and pissing off Matthews and he leaves for nothing, two superstars gone for the price of one.
Marner at least is controlled for 2 years, success with a new grouping could encourage him to stay.</div></div>
The prospect of Matthews leaving if Marner is traded is definitely one to consider and raises a lot of concern. To your point of shopping Matthews, you would be hard pressed to find a destination in which A. Matthews signs long term and B. That destination having a package to equal the value of a guy like Matthews. Nylander will be undervalued and won't be a player you could trade comfortably and walk away thinking you won that deal. Marner is the only viable option in terms of value he could possibly bring in. The situation here in Toronto is definitely not pretty

interesting trade
Let me get this straight. The Leafs trade away a 24 year old 60 point player who just hit his stride this past season along with a solid 3c option in kerfoot for a defensive liability in Subban and a older and lesser player in gusev. Subban at 4.5 is still 2 million too much. The Leafs at this point in time on paper are the best roster this city has seen in easily 15-20 years. Why trade away pieces from a cup contender to make make them much worse. You lose offense and gain further liability on defense all for a pick that probably won't be lottery if you look at how much better the Devils are because of the move LMFAO. This is some of the worst stuff I've seen on this site and I frequent Buffalo and MTL threads. This takes the cake easily

Buddy is still amped about a finals loss in 07 ??. It's hilarious to think a sens fan can even comment. The whole front office a joke. The Mentality in Ottawa is to be utter garbage, get a bunch of draft talent and by the time the team becomes somewhat competitive the pieces are traded because the org is so cap stingy and the cycle just repeats, it Should also be mentioned that this cycle involves bringing in a bunch of salary dumps to further prevent them from signing this young talent. But, on the other hand, they gave up a bunch for a decent second line center in Duchene, so who really knows wtf they're doing anymore ??

Signing Marner Short Term
Spurgeon is easily their best dman. They are not taking a 2nd/3rd line center an awfully contracted d man and a prospect that hasn't done anything in the NHL for him while also giving up a decent winger. Also signing Marner to that much of a short term deal is something they would never do

Vegas wouldn't want to bring on any salary. Would move Miller though. The Calgary trade is awful, really high on MT and will get him for less than Mitch and long term at that. No point giving up a first and to swap d men especially when hamonic is better than zaitsev. Also MT not signing for 7 in Toronto if he wasn't signing for that much in Calgary, will get more easily

It looks like priority is being put towards adding "quick fix" players instead of riding out a rebuild and locking down the young core. Bridging Brock is not smart especially if his numbers are going to be inflated playing with Pettersson. You would also have to sign Hughes, Boeser and Pettersson the same offseason
