Can Canucks fanbase admit to being too toxic?
Maple Leafs fans and Flyers fans get a lot of attention for this criticism.
Main reasons for toxicity: Stanly Cup drought and bandwagon fans
Maple Leafs, Flyers, and Canucks are all going through the top 4 current Stanly Cup droughts
Last time the Vancouver Canucks won the Stanly Cup: never
(49 seasons)
Last time the Maple Leafs won the Stanly Cup: 1967
(52 seasons)
Last time the Philadelphia Flyers won the Stanly Cup: 1975
(44 seasons)
Maple Leafs, Flyers, and Canucks are all in the top 10 highest valued NHL markets.
They have enough success to keep bandwagon fans coming for more.
It's not like the Sabres or Coyotes where a losing culture is established.
Sabres and Coyotes are part of the top 5 lowest valued NHL markets.
Change my mind.

Nothing wrong with signing a depth d-man on a two-way contract at the league minimum. Either fills in the depth role in the NHL or play in the AHL to and continue mentoring prospects in Utica.

True, but if the Canucks have over 31 million dollars to work with next season, then they'll be set to re-sign their core young players and sign a good supporting cast.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>yztnuK</b></div><div>no way jim benning signs Hoffman at any price or term</div></div>

Sutter's trade is to make room for the free agent signings. This is a scenario in which Canucks decide to go for the Cup this upcoming season.

You re-signed a lot of RFAs as if the Canucks young players, not name EP/QH/TD, didn't put up any points or had little impact on the team.
Tanner Pearson's agent will be fired if that's the best he can do for a top 6 winger and Jake Virtanen is not worth a straight up 2nd round pick.

That's going to be a hard no from the Canucks. You'd have to ask someone in EA to say yes to that trade, if you're lucky.

With Schmidt
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>He's a 2-3 dman. A complementary top pairing dman or good second pairing. Just like Myers, Muzzin, whomever.
The Vegas move was dumb and they got themselves screwed as capspace is super expensive today when 2 weeks ago it was much cheaper (see Staal to Detroit)
But honestly Vegas will likely regret this. They had a good enough team for a cup but the bounces didn't go. So they convinced themselves they had to go big fish hunting instead of accepting sometimes it doesn't go your way.
They're over tinkering.</div></div>
I just felt like Schmidt's numbers were inflated by playing for VGK. I'll be rooting for Schmidt nonetheless. Hopefully the Canucks and Golden Knights get what they envisioned next season.

He's a good top pairing or excellent second pairing defenseman who can play both sides signed for non star first pairing money.
He's better than Myers for example.
The problem with the Nucks cap is there one big mistake (Ericksson) and there numerous examples of way overpaying 3rd and fourth liners (Sutter, Roussel, Beagle and Baertschi.) Paying a 29 year old top 2-3 dman fairly isn't the issue.</div></div>
I guess I don't see him as highly as others. If he is a legitimate top 2 d-man, I'm surprised VGK would let him go in favour for AP's hefty contract.

Is Schmidt really worth 5.95 million for another 4 years? This 20/23 roster is really counting on the younger players to step up. Looks like the safety net is low here.

That's fair... Edler still plays like he's still got a few more season left, but Schmidt is an alternative I guess.
Central division is by far the tougher division in the West, so if the Jets make it into the playoffs the they'll be sure to can make a good run. Vezina caliber goaltending always helps.

He's a top 4 d-man the Canucks were looking to add, but this is isn't the kind of contract they should be adding either.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>yztnuK</b></div><div>1. Draft picks are expandable assets that should be used to supplement EP/QH with age relevant NHL players. not wasting waiting for years of development on a draft pick.EP/QH need help now
2. canucks actually have Kesler on LITR giving them $6.5m extra cap.
3. they need roughly $22-25 to sign important players and supplement the roster next off season, this roster has over $22m next off season.</div></div>
1) Doesn't seem like the Canucks should be going all in this season. Next 2 seasons seems like the more appropriate time to make big moves and make a run for the Cup. Canucks still need more high-end prospects to continue building the team sustainably. If the Canucks are a playoff team, then it would make sense to give up picks to acquire missing pieces.
2) Didn't realize the cap space result didn't already include LTIR.
3) Next season, the Canucks' cap space is less than 24 million, and they'll be 7-10 vacant spots to fill in the roster (2.4 to 3.4 million per vacant spot). EP/QH/TD will all be included in that group of players too.

Yeah, there's a lot of big contracts (would be the same for Team Ontario too). It wouldn't matter in a national tournament though. Basically think of it like the NHL World Cup, but within Canada.

Low key approach
1) The trade seems one-sided. I can't imagine the Senators sending away a 2nd and 3rd round pick for rather expensive bottom 6 forwards.
2) And that 3rd line looks very inexperienced and prone to making mistakes.

Tampa hates Benning
Honestly, this scenario doesn't look good for the Canucks.
1) The Canucks are losing their first 3 draft picks, forcing them to draft outside of the first 2 rounds of the draft for the second year in a row.
2) The Canucks are going into the season over the cap space by more than $6.5 million.
3) An additional $11 million dollars is being committed to the cap for the next 5 season until 2024-25. Salary cap is not going to go up by much.

NEW Season
OEL will be making 8.25 million for 7 more seasons until he's 35+ years old. If salary retention was involved it'd be better, but then again Coyotes' will ask for more in return. I think Canucks is better off prioritizing resigning core players like Pettersson, Hughes, and Demko next season.
