Calling him a cap dump and an old shell of a player is just hyperbolic toxic masculinity from a dude from Man Jose, you don’t need to defend Subban or his play to guys like that.
I thought the Sharks would make a small add of a veteran D to try to make a playoff push, clearly their fans would rather they wallow in self pity.

Sharks are only 7 points out of a playoff spot but you seem determined they’re not buyers. Ok, I don’t really care, but a future 3rd and a 6th isn’t really a “huge waste” of resources.

I appreciate you looking out but the Devils can easily afford to offer:
Hughes- 8
Zacha- 5
Bratt- 5
Wood- 3.5
Boqvist- 2.5
That’s under 26 million and represents a jump in value for all of those players. When you factor in two entry level contracts of Holtz and Mercer replacing one of the RFAs and Johnsson in the lineup, there is considerable flexibility to add yet another player, or save for the Smith extension.

Offseason Re-Shape
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Devil1122</b></div><div>I think Tampa rather keep onto Foote</div></div>
My thought process:
Kucherov Stamkos Point Cirelli Palat Gourde Coleman (extended) Hedman McDonagh Sergachev Vasilevskiy is the Lightning Protection list.
That means they're guaranteed to lose one of Cernak Foote Killorn Goodrow (if extended) or Joseph to Seattle.
This deal ensures they get value full value for Foote who seems most likely to be selected by getting out of the Johnson contract.
Tampa can then ensure they don't lose too much D by trading with Seattle to not take Cernak.
Cap savings are used to bring in D help and pay for extensions.

Laine Little for Palmieri Butcher Retained
Wow Jets fans are going to be very disappointed with their return if this thread is in an indication.
I don’t think the Devils pursue Laine unless the majority of the value comes from taking on the 5/26 left on Littles contract. To take on that kind of contract with the injury risk associated to a 31 yr old who already won’t play in 2020 is massive. The price for it in this covid market is incalculable.
Plus $2.3 for Palms who scored more than Laine the last two seasons while Laine “learned to be a more complete player” (like Palms is already) and $2 for Butcher is great value.
Maybe there’s still a team willing to take on $7 AAV AND send a giant return. With 98% of the cap used already, I doubt it. Good luck Jets, sorry he doesn’t want to stay, Devils fans know what that’s like.

Agreed with above about giving a 30 year old a 7/8 year deal. No thanks.
I love the optimism here! We need more of this.</div></div>
I think it’s less of a stretch than you think. Stevens is inarguably a higher pedigree player when the Devils acquired him than Pietrangelo currently is. But both were top 5 picks, produced roughly 450 points in their first 10 seasons. Stevens point production was more impressive as those were his age 18-28 seasons versus 20-30 for AP. Coincidentally they’d both be coming from STL albeit only a year there for SS, and in my scenario above the Devils were taking an odd route to acquire him, just like SS.
It’s because I was a fan of the 95 team and saw great blue liners perform well into their thirties for this team that I think a deal like this for the best available at his position is worth it.

I’ve seen you and zyyyp say this on every Devils thread that dares to make moves to help the team now. Do you really think the Devils are that terrible? Did you think they were awful entering the season after Subban Hughes and Gusev? Are they all busts after disappointing seasons?
Sick and tired of it. Yes the team fell flat on its face to start the season and stuck with an awful system that consistently left their D overmatched. But this is the NHL, there is really great parity. Look at all the teams who have traded future firsts and crashed.
I get you’re probably upset that the season sucked and they will likely lose the lotto tomorrow, but if you’re going to act as an authority on what the Devils might do this offseason, and comment on every post, at least give them a chance.

I think your description of the Devils package is fair (which is rare, this board often gets snarky).
Your description of Gaudreau is also fair (although only two years of control for someone you’re sure is leaving dampens it).
But calling Lucic a bad contract is an understatement when looking at likely a couple years of a flat cap in the covid era. The price to take on that 15 million commitment is at least another mid-late first. So it really hurts a team that should be in its championship window with talent up and down the lineup like Calgary.

VAN ARI Pick Scenario and Cap Dumps
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RebelCoach</b></div><div>I'm interested in that VAN cap situation. As a Devil fan, I would love to make that deal, I feel like DET does it for slightly cheaper or gives up a bit to get that 1st round pick.
Whether VAN gives up the 1st in 2020 or 2021, it doesn't matter.
Goligoski has more value than it would be seen as a toxic deal from ARI. Some team would pay for him. Likely would have to take on Grabner as a toxic deal to bring the cost down to something ARI is giving away.</div></div>
If I'm the Vancouver GM and we just lost the qualifying round and had to lose our 21 unprotected first, I would probably make whatever deal necessary to re-sign Markstrom to avoid an unlucky or disastrous year. Even a young talented team like theirs could collapse if Demko doesn't succeed right away. The Devils just saw their season go down the tubes in a month with shoddy goaltending.
I like the idea of having a veteran LHD on a short term deal to pair with Severson on the first pair, maybe bringing back Andy Greene. That is why I took a shot at Goligoski. If the Devils are willing to move on from Will Butcher for decent value (late second) they could fit in a return with Grabner. (He may not want to waive his NTC to come, but generally they waive it these days.)

I’ll hold off on projecting the ceilings of teenagers. My opinion is that the Devils absolutely cannot have enough players with Lundell’s two-way skill set. I think he’s a top 5 player in other year’s drafts for many of the same reason the Devils liked Nico for 1 overall.
The Ryan O’Reilly type players don’t fall to 33 like they used to. And I think they’re as valuable as ever in today’s nhl.

So you’re saying there’s a chance.
Unless you’re Marty McFly I’d back off the declarative statements about events in the future.
Reasoning on Hoffman contract is that this free agent market may not be flush with cash or long-term deals. No use pretending the last 3 months didn’t happen, I think everyone sees less in contracts (even Hall Petey Krug) but the super talented young RFAs like Barzal, Cirelli, Sergachev etc. So if the term isn’t there for a premium scorer like Hoffman, looking for Jeff Skinner money, then he might take a one year deal and try again next offseason with a presumably rising cap and league stability.

If PK rebounds a little next year and he wants to move on, I'm sure they can make that happen for just some money.</div></div>
The cost to move the entirety of PK Subban’s contract was only to TRADE BACK 15 selections from Vancouver’s mid-20s pick to Montreal’s 40th pick. The Devils would not give up a first to move a contract as you keep repeating.
In this deal they trade an expensive but still useful player and 15 spots in the first round for a lesser cap dump, a third, and 2 years 5.5 million of cap space.
