<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Capitalfail67</b></div><div>Bc those team that win 2-3 years ago still have their core. Oh yeah that core consists of some on the nhl best players. Washington got better since last season....Pittsburgh has Crosby and malkin still making them a contender njd just drafted an elite player and added pk. Taylor hall is also healthy going in. Ranger also added an elite player and trouba. And the bread man. Carolina is deeper than last year. Please tell me how this division isn’t the most deep from 1-8? I’ll wait. Atlantic bc they have 3 good teams and 5 awful teams? Come on buddy. The metro is so good that you said you could see the penguins being the odd team out.

Tampa got worse since last year. Toronto is slightly better and Boston is the same.

Every metro team minus the blue jackets got better or stayed about the same.....</div></div>

Pens traded away their 2nd leading scorer, Malkin's not getting any younger and they had no notable signing this offseason. I see them in the playoffs just because Crosby can carry them in, but no longer see them as a threat to do anything when they get there. NJD drafted an elite prospect, not player. You can ask around and most people are gonna say Hughes needs at least a year to reach his potential. And I don't think there is a more overrated move this offseason than the Subban trade. He's good, but he's had issues playing a full season 3 of the last 4 years, and I don't see how he makes a mediocre Devils team a playoff contender. And they're goaltending situation is a mess. Again, the Rangers added an elite prospect, although I think he will make a bigger impact than Hughes this year. I also like the two signings for them, even though I think it will lead to cap issues down the road. They also have an aging goaltender whose coming off his worst save % in his career and depth that I don't completely trust. I like Carolina, although their goaltending scares me, that's why I have them finishing second. And the Atlantic has 1 fantastic team, 2 great teams, 2 really good teams, 1 meh team, and 2 bad teams. Don't know how you can think Florida and Montreal are awful. The Pens could be the odd team out because this isn't the same team that won back to back cups a couple of years ago and I think they could really start to drop starting this year, although Crosby is always lurking.

Tampa got worse coming off a 128 point season, but they still have the most talented roster in the league. So they are now what? A 115 point team? Boston is the same, and they just went to the finals, so I think they'll be fine with the roster they have.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>capfriendlyaccount</b></div><div>No big top six winger addition, payed Donskoi instead who I feel is repetitive, lost value in Barrie trade and Burakovski trade while acquiring guys who will need to have bounceback years for the deal to be fair, traded Soderberg for a meh return, and got two waiver eligible depth dman as sweeteners.
Adding Kreider would be a great move IMO. I also prefer Ferland to Donskoi, (tier 2 UFA vs tier 3 in my books). It's partly opinion and preference though. Poor is probably too strong but they could've done a lot better.</div></div>

Top 6 winger was never something they were going to target heavily (outside of Panarin, but that was never going to happen anyway). They needed a 2C and they got exactly that by trading away someone who wasn't going to resign with them anyway (Barrie). Sorderberg is the same situation as Barrie, coming off a career year and he wasn't coming back after this year either. Bura is definitely someone they are relying on to have more production than he had with the Caps, but he is also going to be given the chance to do that in a top 6 role and PP time (didn't get either in Washington). Donskoi is also a strong possession player who will see PP2 time and has a good chance to get 40 points. And they also drafted Byram and Newhook. Not saying they had the best offseason ever, but saying they had a poor one just doesn't make sense. And adding Krieder, with 1 year left on his deal especially at this price point, makes zero sense with all of the other contracts they have coming up in the next 4 years. They added top 6 wingers for cheap hoping the advanced stats show up in a bigger role.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TJTwolf</b></div><div>I apologise, I probably should have broken that up more.

4+ for Zads, who as I say, I don't think will be on the bottom pairing, (so we'll have to agree to disagree there and on the necessity of the physical aspects of the game) would be fine by me. I'd take 4+ happily if his game (and the cap) continues going upwards. If it plateaus then maybe not, and yes if he's on the bottom pairing then 4+ is probably too much, but as I said I don't think he will be. The trouble is, he'll likely have already been paid that on longer term.

I'd see the Avs breaking it up more if this were going to be something close to the line up. Zads &amp; Cale, Girard &amp; EJ (or whoever as I hope they'll have managed to move EJ by then), Byram &amp; Timmins, Graves &amp; maybe Meloche (a righty even though he's played a lot on the left) as the 7th &amp; 8th.

I doubt Rosen is still there unless he blasts out of the blocks, he's a 'Nemeth' to me. Meloche could be with Sam by then I guess, and another D in the 8th spot.

All hypothetical (as everything is here) and yes the possibility of Zads having been taken by Seattle is also there as you rightly say. Good to debate it with you!</div></div>

Yeah if he is a long term top 4 D in your mind and he does grow as a player, there is absolutely an argument to be made there about paying him 4M+. I just like to think of the possibilities with a top 4 of Girard/Makar/Timmins/Byram. I also hope that EJ gets moved out (or waives the NMC) before that contract is up or even before the ED so they can protect someone like Z if there is growth in his game.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TJTwolf</b></div><div>So Adam Foote wouldn't have been worth keeping by your definition (and I'm not comparing the two directly as Foote was great at what he did, Zads could get to that level as he's still comparatively young and has really only just put it together but the similarities are there), though I appreciate he wasn't in much of the salary cap era. To my mind the Avs dumped the wrong D when they lost him, and it showed (we also lost Blake shortly after if I remember correctly, when it was basically the choice between keeping Foote or Blake, and I reckon Foote was also the one who was more loyal and less mercenary, and almost certainly cost less than Blake. The Avs were scrambling to get under the cap before it hit). Interestingly Foote won a gold in both the Olympics and Worlds. Seems big physical Dmen can't be world class and worth the money right? Foote made his international debut at 24, Zadorov at 23. A much less talented Russian team (by comparison to the Canadian teams that won golds) won bronze. You're telling me a good, physical D isn't worth keeping? Foote was also actually decent going forward too (though he didn't do it very often, but see his OHL stats and watch the few times he did it in the NHL), but played the role he was asked to because he was good at it and the Avs needed it. Foote stayed at home to allow Blake to roam (and though Blake was much bigger and more physical than Barrie or Makar, they play a similar game in going forward and roaming if not more so, but you don't need a solid, physical D to cover that of course) Sound familiar yet? You want to move to a comparatively soft veteran (34) who is your biggest at 6'4 221, and has durability issues, a 'chippy', 'nasty', D at 6'3 205 (who'll be 25 if he's got into the NHL), and a bunch of smaller, skilled Dmen who are going to get knocked from pillar to post then be my guest, and the only reason Boston would want Zads is because they've been missing big Z. Where else is your grit and sandpaper coming from in this line up? Meloche who's a maybe and is only two years younger than Zadorov and still hasn't cracked the line up, Landeskog, and maaaybe Kadri &amp; Compher (J.T. is more of a pest).</div></div>

I had a hard time following this but to answer the broader question of whether or Z is worth it or not, I don't think he is. I think the physical aspect of the game is overrated (again personal opinion) and you don't pay guys like that a lot of money. He will be a bottom pairing Dman if he stays on this team for a couple more years and if he wants 4M+, there is no chance they pay him that to fill that role. If somehow the point production gets a boost, which is definitely possible then maybe he becomes worth it, but then I think Seattle takes him. I'm taking skill over size every day of the week and there are guys to be had for real cheap who can play that physical game on your bottom pair.
