The Avs are lowballing Rantanen and it looks bad
This news is actually not bad from my perspective. I thought they were offering something like 10.5 and he was turning it down. I was, and still am, totally fine with a contract in the 9.75 range and from what we are hearing, they are offering contracts much lower than that, which means that a reasonable contract is probably what he ends up signing. 8.5 for a guy that has put up 84 and 87 point seasons is a totally fair contract, I don't care how much Toronto decided to overpay Marner, but I am also fine with something closer to 10 if it means locking him down for 7 years.

Well I think at this point you are planning on giving mackinnon something close to 15 mil, assuming the cap keeps increasing. He’s a top 2 or 3 player in the league. Landy is gonna get 7/8 mil a year and we’ll have to see about Grubauer, he’s still a wildcard. None of those guys are going to be making what mikko is going to make, except for mackinnon obviously.

I don’t see the avs signing him to a 2 year deal. That summer would then consist of mikko, gabe and makar. That would be a crazy expensive summer, and you would be in the same position with Mikko as you are now. Idk how this is going to get settled, but I hope they get at least 6 years out of him. And it’s not like making 10 million more over the span of your career is that big of a deal when you are going to make over 100 million regardless if you sign long or short term now.

20192020 Standings Predictions
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Capitalfail67</b></div><div>Bc those team that win 2-3 years ago still have their core. Oh yeah that core consists of some on the nhl best players. Washington got better since last season....Pittsburgh has Crosby and malkin still making them a contender njd just drafted an elite player and added pk. Taylor hall is also healthy going in. Ranger also added an elite player and trouba. And the bread man. Carolina is deeper than last year. Please tell me how this division isn’t the most deep from 1-8? I’ll wait. Atlantic bc they have 3 good teams and 5 awful teams? Come on buddy. The metro is so good that you said you could see the penguins being the odd team out.
Tampa got worse since last year. Toronto is slightly better and Boston is the same.
Every metro team minus the blue jackets got better or stayed about the same.....</div></div>
Pens traded away their 2nd leading scorer, Malkin's not getting any younger and they had no notable signing this offseason. I see them in the playoffs just because Crosby can carry them in, but no longer see them as a threat to do anything when they get there. NJD drafted an elite prospect, not player. You can ask around and most people are gonna say Hughes needs at least a year to reach his potential. And I don't think there is a more overrated move this offseason than the Subban trade. He's good, but he's had issues playing a full season 3 of the last 4 years, and I don't see how he makes a mediocre Devils team a playoff contender. And they're goaltending situation is a mess. Again, the Rangers added an elite prospect, although I think he will make a bigger impact than Hughes this year. I also like the two signings for them, even though I think it will lead to cap issues down the road. They also have an aging goaltender whose coming off his worst save % in his career and depth that I don't completely trust. I like Carolina, although their goaltending scares me, that's why I have them finishing second. And the Atlantic has 1 fantastic team, 2 great teams, 2 really good teams, 1 meh team, and 2 bad teams. Don't know how you can think Florida and Montreal are awful. The Pens could be the odd team out because this isn't the same team that won back to back cups a couple of years ago and I think they could really start to drop starting this year, although Crosby is always lurking.
Tampa got worse coming off a 128 point season, but they still have the most talented roster in the league. So they are now what? A 115 point team? Boston is the same, and they just went to the finals, so I think they'll be fine with the roster they have.

No to mention the just got the #1 and -#2 overall pick. Just added Subban. I think the metro is absolutely the strongest division when you talk about the penguins not making the playoffs. Also Tampa bay got swept by the worse metro team last year. Just saying the metro has more better teams where the other have 3 good teams and 3 terrible teams.</div></div>
What does winning the cup 2/3/4 seasons ago have to do with how strong a division is this year? Every division has their superstar players and those draft picks are not likely to be making any drastic differences for at least a year. Columbus also loaded up at the deadline last year and lost their top goalie, skater, and then Duchene and Dzingel.

Adding Kreider would be a great move IMO. I also prefer Ferland to Donskoi, (tier 2 UFA vs tier 3 in my books). It's partly opinion and preference though. Poor is probably too strong but they could've done a lot better.</div></div>
Top 6 winger was never something they were going to target heavily (outside of Panarin, but that was never going to happen anyway). They needed a 2C and they got exactly that by trading away someone who wasn't going to resign with them anyway (Barrie). Sorderberg is the same situation as Barrie, coming off a career year and he wasn't coming back after this year either. Bura is definitely someone they are relying on to have more production than he had with the Caps, but he is also going to be given the chance to do that in a top 6 role and PP time (didn't get either in Washington). Donskoi is also a strong possession player who will see PP2 time and has a good chance to get 40 points. And they also drafted Byram and Newhook. Not saying they had the best offseason ever, but saying they had a poor one just doesn't make sense. And adding Krieder, with 1 year left on his deal especially at this price point, makes zero sense with all of the other contracts they have coming up in the next 4 years. They added top 6 wingers for cheap hoping the advanced stats show up in a bigger role.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TJTwolf</b></div><div>I apologise, I probably should have broken that up more.
4+ for Zads, who as I say, I don't think will be on the bottom pairing, (so we'll have to agree to disagree there and on the necessity of the physical aspects of the game) would be fine by me. I'd take 4+ happily if his game (and the cap) continues going upwards. If it plateaus then maybe not, and yes if he's on the bottom pairing then 4+ is probably too much, but as I said I don't think he will be. The trouble is, he'll likely have already been paid that on longer term.
I'd see the Avs breaking it up more if this were going to be something close to the line up. Zads & Cale, Girard & EJ (or whoever as I hope they'll have managed to move EJ by then), Byram & Timmins, Graves & maybe Meloche (a righty even though he's played a lot on the left) as the 7th & 8th.
I doubt Rosen is still there unless he blasts out of the blocks, he's a 'Nemeth' to me. Meloche could be with Sam by then I guess, and another D in the 8th spot.
All hypothetical (as everything is here) and yes the possibility of Zads having been taken by Seattle is also there as you rightly say. Good to debate it with you!</div></div>
Yeah if he is a long term top 4 D in your mind and he does grow as a player, there is absolutely an argument to be made there about paying him 4M+. I just like to think of the possibilities with a top 4 of Girard/Makar/Timmins/Byram. I also hope that EJ gets moved out (or waives the NMC) before that contract is up or even before the ED so they can protect someone like Z if there is growth in his game.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TJTwolf</b></div><div>So Adam Foote wouldn't have been worth keeping by your definition (and I'm not comparing the two directly as Foote was great at what he did, Zads could get to that level as he's still comparatively young and has really only just put it together but the similarities are there), though I appreciate he wasn't in much of the salary cap era. To my mind the Avs dumped the wrong D when they lost him, and it showed (we also lost Blake shortly after if I remember correctly, when it was basically the choice between keeping Foote or Blake, and I reckon Foote was also the one who was more loyal and less mercenary, and almost certainly cost less than Blake. The Avs were scrambling to get under the cap before it hit). Interestingly Foote won a gold in both the Olympics and Worlds. Seems big physical Dmen can't be world class and worth the money right? Foote made his international debut at 24, Zadorov at 23. A much less talented Russian team (by comparison to the Canadian teams that won golds) won bronze. You're telling me a good, physical D isn't worth keeping? Foote was also actually decent going forward too (though he didn't do it very often, but see his OHL stats and watch the few times he did it in the NHL), but played the role he was asked to because he was good at it and the Avs needed it. Foote stayed at home to allow Blake to roam (and though Blake was much bigger and more physical than Barrie or Makar, they play a similar game in going forward and roaming if not more so, but you don't need a solid, physical D to cover that of course) Sound familiar yet? You want to move to a comparatively soft veteran (34) who is your biggest at 6'4 221, and has durability issues, a 'chippy', 'nasty', D at 6'3 205 (who'll be 25 if he's got into the NHL), and a bunch of smaller, skilled Dmen who are going to get knocked from pillar to post then be my guest, and the only reason Boston would want Zads is because they've been missing big Z. Where else is your grit and sandpaper coming from in this line up? Meloche who's a maybe and is only two years younger than Zadorov and still hasn't cracked the line up, Landeskog, and maaaybe Kadri & Compher (J.T. is more of a pest).</div></div>
I had a hard time following this but to answer the broader question of whether or Z is worth it or not, I don't think he is. I think the physical aspect of the game is overrated (again personal opinion) and you don't pay guys like that a lot of money. He will be a bottom pairing Dman if he stays on this team for a couple more years and if he wants 4M+, there is no chance they pay him that to fill that role. If somehow the point production gets a boost, which is definitely possible then maybe he becomes worth it, but then I think Seattle takes him. I'm taking skill over size every day of the week and there are guys to be had for real cheap who can play that physical game on your bottom pair.

(That's the sort of description I'd have applied to a former Avs forward in their heyday). Don't get me wrong I like the idea of Meloche coming in for a look. I just think Zads is heavily underrated and probably the perfect foil for Makar. They should also be keeping Graves in the mix if they're smart. He looks like he has the tools if he's given a chance.</div></div>
Yeah I'm not saying that Z is bad or anything, he is really good at what he does and I think he has a sneaky good shot (that he doesn't use enough), but there are just cheaper options that can fill the bottom pairing on this team. He will also hold some value if they decide to trade him that can bring back something of significance. Graves and Rosen are the two guys I'm looking at right now as guys who can fill in that bottom pairing this year while Cole is out and especially if Byram isn't on the team.

From what it sounds like Melcohe is supposed to be super nasty and physical. Obviously we won't know what he brings until he plays in the NHL but he should bring a physical presence for a lot cheaper. Pretty much what I said above applies here.

When you look at the Avs defense in a year or 2, where does Zadorov fit in? The top 4 looks like Makar, Byram, Timmins, and Girard. Zadorov is important and good at what he does, I'm not arguing that, but he is going to demand too much money for a guy on your bottom pairing. This is why you have guys like Meloche to come in and fill those roles on cheaper ELC contracts. I'm not bashing Z but points pay and he doesn't put enough of them up for the money he is going to want.

They're going to go into the season and see where Jost and Bura can take that second line and I'm sure we'll see one of Landy or Rantanen get moved down and have Bura play on the 1st line for a bit just to see if he can produce and keep up. The potential on that 2nd line (Jost-Kadri-Bura) is through the roof, we'll see if they can finally put it together.

Most expensive bottom defensive pairing in the league lol. While it would be funny to bring Barrie back after 1 year, there's a reason they traded him and it was so they didn't have to sign him to that exact kind of contract. They got value out of him and that's what they needed to do. Don't see him playing another game in an Avs uniform. I also think Krieder would demand more moeny than that? Not someone I pay a lot of attention to but I think that contract for him would be more expensive.

I mean he shot 11.1%, not like he shot 20% or something ridiculous like that. I think 20-30-50 is something you could count on from Tuch over the entire length of that contract and he's only 23 so there is still room for growth. And he had over a 53.5 Corsi For % so I would rely on him to drive play out of his own zone and keep it in the offensive zone (I don't know who he normally played with in Vegas so that might have something to do with that high number but I still really like him).

They were never going to resign him at year end. Would have cost too much and they have guys (Makar, Byram) coming in that are also going to demand a lot of money eventually who will fill what Barrie did for them. They either trade him now (which they did for what was their most pressing need) or lose him at year end for nothing. The two wildcards for me are Jost and Bura. If those two can play well and have 40+ point seasons, this team will score at will. Remains to be seen though.
