Vancouver Canucks signed Brock Boeser (3 Years / $5,875,000 AAV)
I think this is a reverse "prove it deal". The player wants to see that the club will put a quality team on the ice more than a club wanting to see what the player can do.

Toronto Maple Leafs signed Mitchell Marner (6 Years / $10,903,000 AAV)
As a Wild fan at least the Leafs are overpaying for young, top players. Worried aboot (Canadien spelling) your cap? We'll do Parise for Marner straight up. You should get a cup out of this squad before you suffer the down years. We'll get a consistent playoff early exit and still suffer the same fate.

Minnesota Wild signed Jared Spurgeon (7 Years / $7,575,000 AAV)
So in 5 years the Wild will have about $30 million into 4 players 35 and over. Given we are probably due for a recession in the next couple of years the cap won't rise enough to hide it and fans won't support the bubble playoff team that's been put on the ice consistently for years much longer with all the quality hockey to see in this state . Guerin has a tough road ahead (I do like his selection as GM). I have been wondering for over a year if it's not the GM, but the owner causing the issues. I love the let's win now attitude and the willingness to spend, but that just doesn't work in the salary cap era without building a solid young core or filling in around superstars with value players - Wild have neither. I love Spurgeon and would have given that easily at 5 years. If Mr. Hockey were still alive they'd probably throw at least a 5 year deal at him.

Minnesota Wild signed Kevin Fiala (2 Years / $3,000,000 AAV)
As a Wild fan I don't like it. Nashville was not a team overloded with offense last year, maybe they traded a future star for the Cup run but I doubt it. Fiala is a turnover machine. Plus/minus is a subjective stat but way too high last year if you are creating goals. He gave the opposing team too many quality chances. I think Fenton traded Granlund for a player that hopefully becomes Granlund. Being a former Nashville employee he overvalue Fiala based on when they first scouted him. Hope I'm wrong, but at least we got Rask to carry the team. . I think Fenton will pay for this.....oh wait he's unemployed and still making more than almost all us Wild fans, guess the joke on us. Anyone hiring a new GM, I'll send a resume.

Next Years 1st Rnd Exit
I just don't see getting a push over the top this year. Not enough cap room to add the scoring needed or a true #1 center that is younger. They have tried the last couple of years to add the right pieces but it has strpped them with the cap and stolen prospects/picks.. Losing Tuch and Haula also hurt.
Let Ennis' contract expire. Deal Staal at the deadline (his performance will probably demand a higher contract with his resurgence so I don't see him being resigned on a just make the playoffs team). Deal Nino to a contender at the deadline who is going to make a cup run and is willing to take the risk (if he puts up a 50 pt season pace). See what you have in these 25 year old AHLers and make some big moves next off season. They may be able to trade a top 4 D for a #1 younger center in a deal by then. And you still have room for a buyout option then if needed. Maybe deal Dubnyk at the deadline if the Wild doesn't look to be a cup contender for a year or two.
I see Suter's contract being okay by the end of his career barring injury. Parise I see as needing to retire for health reasons before it plays out, but it was a mistake contract and I really like him as a player.
