playoff ready
I’m a habs fan. You are overpaying for that package.
We don’t need Robertson, the 4th or 5th.
Cowan, Timmins and a late 1st for 2 yrs of Savard at 1.75M$ and 2yrs of Evans… I’m good with that.

Playoff Bound
I’m no Armia fan, but I think we can get a little something in return for him. Not much. Just a little something. I think someone is going to bite on him because of the really good playoff he had with Staal & Perry and will hope to catch some lightning in a bottle.
I think he gets us a 3rd or a 4th without retaining salary. If we retain, it likely gets us a little more.

At that price, I’d do it, but I’m not using a salary retention spot for that return

What we have and what needs to go
Reinbacher’s play once over here from Kloten will show us if he’s ready or not. Guehle and Xhekaj came straight to the NHL without getting seasoning for a year in Laval.
I think the chemistry Xhekaj and Mailloux developed in Laval for a month could entice management to give that pairing a try as a third pairing. They’re big enough to handle the physicality of other teams 3rd/4th liners, and skilled enough to take advantage of them and get points.

Walker and Savard
I like the Savard trade, and I think it’s a fair trade for both teams. Everyone knows Savard isn’t worth a 1st rd pick, but with salary retention and the inclusion of a 2nd rd pick, a late 1st rd pick is fair value.
I’d even be willing to accept an expiring contract to help make it happen.

Harris to TBL
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tobydad</b></div><div>Harris is worth more than a late 2nd round. We add the Avalanche 2nd for 2024 and a depth player at Laval and get their 2026 1st round pick.</div></div>
Harris is a decent young dman who doesn’t necessarily have an “x” factor. He is good at a lot of things but not dominant in any of them. He would slide in well on a team like TBL as a guy who could likely be a 3LD on a regular basis, but handle a few more minutes while Sergachev is out.
3LDs don’t get much more than a late 2nd. His value is his youth and his cap hit.

I wouldn’t pay that much for Knies. I would keep Savard. I can picture him playing 3rd pairing/pk specialist minutes (12-15 min/g) one day while being a veteran presence on this young team. We can’t trade all those vets. When these kids come up, they’ll need guidance and leadership from someone.

Trying to find a Zegras trade that de-risks the trade for Anaheim
That trade makes sense, but I wouldn’t do it until the draft. By then, we’ll know where we stand with the rank of our selection and which players would be available. I think if players like Demidov or Lindstrom are still available when we pick, then we keep the pick. If the elite offensive talent is gone, then I’d consider this dral.

Deadline habs
I think Zegras is way overrated by some fans on this forum.
I would only trade huge packages for players that are more than one dimensional.
Crosby, Lindros, Francis, etc… players that are multi-dimensional have a lot to offer. Example, if Crosby doesn’t score one night, he can kill a penalty, start a fight, throw a hit, win faceoffs, etc.
Zegras doesn’t strike me as a multi-dimensional player. He scores (and not at elite levels either). He’s a slightly above average scorer.
My offer would be one of our LHD not named Guhle or Hutson, and a 1st that is top10 protected.
That’s it.

A first round pick for Savard?
He’s a valuable commodity, but a first? I don’t think so.
By the way, I wouldn’t trade him. You can’t unload ALL the vets. You need to keep some of them around to chaperone the youngsters and support the young captain. Savard would stay unless wowed by an offer.

When’s the last time an ECHL player was included in a trade?
Personally, I’d re-sign him, but I could see Edmonton doing this type of deal with a better minor leaguer

You’re overvaluing Barron. He’s a 5-6-7 dman. He’s an NHLer, I’ve got no problem admitting that, but he’s more of a depth guy than a go-to guy.

I would take that Allen trade. Dumping his salary without retaining any is a ton of value right there let alone getting a 4th.

Deep in 2nd & 3rd pairing RHDmen… I don’t think they have “the guy” yet to play on a top pairing with Guehle.
I could picture….
Guehle - ?????
Matheson - Reinbacher
Hutson - Barron
Other LHD: Xhekaj, Struble, Harris, Engstrom
Other RHD: Savard (likely traded soon), Kovacevic, Mailloux
That #1 RHD that can go 25+ minutes/game… we don’t have that guy yet.

Habs decline. The Habs are deep on the left side of their defence corps… Guehle, Matheson, Xhekaj, Hutson, Struble… Broberg’s just not what they need.

I’d do Monahan with retained salary for Minten. But I don’t blame the Leafs for not doing this.
McMann is a decent player, but I feel undrafted college UFAs don’t have a ton of value unless they start producing immediately in the NHL… and if they did start producing, then they wouldn’t be available.
As far as I’m concerned, dealing Xhekaj would have to involve a package that is too good to refuse.

Call me crazy, but I’d give Monahan a 5 yr extension. People forget that he’s only 28. He’d only be 33 at the end of that deal. He can C or W, faceoff machine, offensive ability, défensive acumen… sign me up for more of that.

Arber Xhekaj is a very important piece to any team in the league, regardless if you’re a young rebuilding team looking for asset protection… or an established team looking to protect its star players…
Having said that…
A first round pick for Xhekaj? Seems like a very steep price to pay, especially when you consider that it’s likely going to be a top10 pick
