Habs will do everything possible to keep Beck. I doubt they go for that.
That Dubois trade is overly complicated for no reason. PLD for a salary (Dvorak/Hoffman/Armia), a first, and a prospect not named Hutson/Beck/Mailloux/Roy is how I see it. More than that, and I take my chances once PLD goes UFA.

If there would be no retention on the Dvorak deal, I’d do the deal just for the cap flexibility.

He’s not a better RHD option than the guys you’ve listed (minus Letang)?
He was really solid for the Habs for a while. While I’ve never considered him a 1RHD, I’ve always thought his proper seat was as a 2RHD.

Prob impossible to make all these moves but Im pretty happy with this roster
I’m convinced there’s going to be someone moved from the left side of the habs d-corps, it’s just hard to predict who.
Matheson: had a season worthy of 1st pairing recognition. Is that a career year for him, or his new norm?
Guehle: highly touted as a future 1st pairing shutdown option with moderate offensive contribution
Xhekaj: a dominating physical presence that’s been lacking in this organization for decades. His play doesn’t get enough recognition.
Harris: has personal connections to Hughes, and does nothing elite, but everything well
Edmundson: physical presence and top notch leadership but on the wrong side of 30. Nobody wants his contact or medical issues
There’s only room for 3or4… and lets not forget that Lane Hutson, Jayden Struble, and Adam Engstrom are just around the corner too.
I’m really curious to see how this off-season plays out for the Habs.

I don’t understand why either team would do the PIT/MTL trade you’re proposing.
Care to explain the logic?
All I see is DeSmith being of very similar value as Monty. If you agree with that, then that means PIT is giving up 4 other assets for Kovacevic.
This doesn’t add up to me, or I’m missing something in this proposal.

The Habs will be going with an extreme youth movement in the near future, when you consider the UFA contracts expiring (Drouin, Byron, Monahan… Edmundson & Hoffman the summer after).
Having said that, they also understand that a veteran presence is still needed for a variety of reasons and I think the Habs brass views views his presence around this youth movement as part of the rebuild

Realistic Retool
I seriously doubt that Josh Anderson is available. MTL would be more than happy to wait for the summer of ‘24 to get PLD for nothing before giving up Anderson.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s fair value. I just think the Habs have wanted a big player with speed and physicality for so long that they won’t give him up easily.

I’m good with that Dvorak/Myers trade as well. We’re short on RHD. We shorten our commitment (Dvorak has 2 yrs left, Myers 1). We can make a decision during the season about either extending him, or moving him at the deadline for more assets.

They don’t have long term plans that involve Hoffman.
He’s an asset to flip and get return. Especially when the acquiring team gets him at a hair over 1M.

I’m all for PLD coming to MTL, but I think WIN can do better than that deal. Plus, MTL would want to expedite a salary to fit PLD under the cap AND sign a few RFAs.
I’m thinking something like
Hoffman (50% retained, 2.25M)
1st rd pick (the FLA pick)
Sean Farrell or Riley Kidney
WIN gets Hoffman some good ice time to put up numbers, allowing them to flip Hoffmanat the ‘24 deadline. If they retain 50% on Hoffman, someone can pick up a goal scoring threat at 1.125M for a playoff run. That’ll be worth something.

How Winnipeg should respond if Montreal decides to offersheet PLD
Nothing happens with PLD unless MTL re-acquires it’s 2nd rounder from ARZ.
PLD isn’t taking a pay cut. And PLD has ALL the leverage right now. He can talk to MTL when free agency starts. If he says he wants to be a hab, Kent Hughes calls ARZ and reacquires his 2nd rd pick.
WIN only needs to worry once that happens.
If WIN was smart, they could put this all to bed by themselves acquiring MTL’s 2nd rd pick of ‘24.

A little money has to go the other way in order for the finances to work out. Having said that, WIN can pick which one they want, but the must pick one of Dvorak or Armia.
The FLA 1st must also be part of the deal.
Their also has to be a good prospect going the other way. I think the only “untouchable” prospect would be Hutson. If you go with the addage that you have to give something to get something, Owen Beck makes sense here.
I think where most people argue is to decide if more needs to be added, and if so, how much more.
Dvorak, Beck, and a 1st is a big haul if you factor in that the only team that really wants him is MTL.

I agree with which players are going out, I just don’t think Hughes can work that much magic in one offseason alone. And if we aren’t making the playoffs next season, we might as well hold on to Armia and pray for a comeback season in ordef for his value to climb some.

Go get that 2nd for Hoffman and then come back. Good luck with that.
I think all teams would welcome another Montreal joke sheet. It will give us something to laugh at all summer.
Why would PLD sign an offer sheet for less thanhe can get in arbitration? Zero chance he signs a lowball offer sheet. That's not well thought out at all.
Montreal won't have a shot at PLD as a UFA as he likely doesn't get there and if he does Montreal won't be able to compete with the American teams.</div></div>
Why wouldn’t MTL be able to compete with other teams. Lots of money coming off the books soon, owner with deep pockets, one of the best barns to play in…

I’d do Edmundson & Dvorak for Mittelstadt.
BUF gets a faceoff guy for deeper in the lineup and solid leadership and defensive/physical play from Edmunson.
Montreal can’t take Mittelstadt and keep Dvorak.

1.125M cap hit for a pro rated 20 goal scorer isn’t worth a 2nd rd pick?
Of course the Habs can’t get a 2nd for him because whoever acquires him is getting a 2.25M cap hit, not the 1.125M you could offer.
But the next team acquiring him gets him for 1.125M$. That’s where Hoffman is valuable.
But hey, if you think you’ll get more than that for PLD, you can hold on to him, and we will be more than happy to scoop him up in the summer of ’24 without losing any prospects or draft picks.
I’d even offer sheet him with a 1yr deal at 7M$ if I’m the Habs. If WIN doesn’t match, it’s a 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd. If they do, then PLD is UFA in the following summer. Good for the Habs either way.

Trading off summer time
Hoffman (50% retained)
Mysak
Norlinder
1st rd ‘23
4th rd ‘23
For PLD
If I’m WIN, this is a place to start, but it needs to be improved. Taking Mysak & Norlinder out of the deal and replacing it with a better prospect, and I think WIN could be tempted, but only if they think they’ll be selling next year.
What if it was
Hoffman (50% retained)
Beck
1st rd ‘23
And before WIN fans say Hoffman isn’t worth anything, he’s a 4.5M cap hit. With 50% retained, he’ll be a 2.25M cap hit to the Jets. If they are sellers at next year’s deadline, dealing Hoffman with another 50% retained means whoever acquires Hoffman will get a pro-rated 20 goal scorer for a 1.125M cap hit for a playoff run. That gets you a 2nd rd pick, maybe more with a little luck.
To recap: WIN could end up with
Beck,
a 1st rd in ‘23,
and likely a future 2nd rd pick, or better.
All that for a guy they know they will lose eventually.
I’m not sure you’ll get two prime assets and another good asset, for a guy that you know won’t be back.
Again. And I reiterate, IF THE JETS ARE SELLERS NEXT SPRING…

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>habs_need_Scoring</b></div><div>Agree with most of this. Armia should be bought out so we can move on, for now gonna have to live with gallagher's contract, it sucks but we dont need the cap space in the next year or two. I would probably try and get Gurianov on a two year deal, we have a few wingers that should be moving up in the next couple seasons, mainly Farrel, Roy, Gurianov may become expendable in that second year and could be a decent TDL depending how he is producing.</div></div>
I can get on board with holding on to Gally a little.
The reason I gave Gurianov one year instead of two is to make him valuable at next year’s TDL.
