The rumored trade during season was Holtz for Markstrom with some retention. Unlikely price would be this much in off-season, especially since he blocked a trade to LAK, but agreed to trade to NJD.</div></div>
I hope we don’t give up much as I’m not a big Markstrom guy but I feel Fitz is gonna feel pressure. I’d rather not give up Holtz, I’d like to see him under a different coach before we give up on him. Think Marky will get a 1st, anything beyond that will probably depend on the market and how many teams are bidding for him.

Honestly I wouldn’t do it myself, not super high on giving up assets like that on goalies in general, and also scared off by Markstrom’s age/inconsistency. That said, I think Fitz is going to feel pressure to add a goalie and Markstrom seems like the most likely fit.

Yeah not as worried about Tarasenko could live with or without him. But wonder if OTT would ever consider a Chychrun move, NJ could certainly use him.

How to handle the goalie situation
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Tjm220</b></div><div>Comrie has played like the second coming of Carter Hutton, who may as well have been legally blind for the last two years of his Sabres contract. He’s played one decent game this season where he got a win. The rest of the time he has been a liability. I doubt he’s the answer for New Jersey anymore than he was in Buffalo.</div></div>
LMAO. Second coming of Carter Hutton made me legit lol.
Havent gotten a chance to see Comrie this year but I was impressed with his time in WPG and (briefly) NJ. Seems like Sabres are making all their goalies look bad this year. Not that any of them have played great, but structurally definitely not helping. For how bad Vitek has been in NJ, I’d give Comrie a shot, and if he sucks just waive him again.

Honestly, hard to disagree with you here. I feel like Bahl and Marino don’t gel great together so I wouldnt mind breaking them up but unless Luke and Miller start looking less good together it would be hard to split them up.

I kind of look at it as we have three second pairs. Play whoevers going that night and what we need given the situation. Those two could definitely have more icetime than the other pairs on certain nights but I dont think they have been good enough this year to be considered a true solid top pair.

Bump Holtz Up
Yup. Id love to see him get a chance with Bratt, theyve shown flashes of chemistry. And McLeod should be able to muck it up and battle for pucks while Holtz can focus on getting open to shoot. If it doesnt work you can always go back, but Id like to see them try with how Holtz has played these last few.

2024
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tupty</b></div><div>This would be a bad deal for the Bruins. If you don't follow them closely, the Bruins view Swayman as being on a trajectory similar to Oettenger, even though he admittedly is not the same player yet.
The 1st rounder is a great start, but not enough. The prospect does not fit the Bruins biggest position of need (C) and is not trending to be a top 6 NHL winger at this point (according to Dobber), so there is not much value there. Vanicek coming back the other way for next season would be a cap burden with Bussi likely ready to be a low cost backup/1B next year if one of Ullmark/Swayman leave, and so including Vanicek would likely increase the cost to NJ. The Bruins aren't giving up their most valuable goalie and around 2.5m in cap space just for a late 1st rounder.
NJ should give Schmid another year and see if he can become the 1A. Vanicek is a fine 1B. And if Schmid isn't quite ready, Ullmark for a year might make more sense given his much lower trade cost and similar current level of play. If Schmid falls apart, then I'm sure Swayman can be had, but I think the price is going to be much higher than what you proposed, and sending a goalie back to the Bruins probably won't work unless the deal is sweetened even further.</div></div>
Very fair take here. I do wonder if the relationship soured at all with the arbitration but Id imagine Bruins hope to lock Swayman down long term regardless.
I do think how the B’s look this year will be a big factor in the future. Obviously there will be some dropoff after last year but the question is how much. If they are still good/decent there is no reason to move Swayman. Even if they are mediocre and around the wild card hunt I dont see them moving him.
The real question is what do they do if they are bad. Like way out of playoffs bad. Part of being good for so long like they have is the fact that the prospect pool isnt very deep. Swayman would be one of the biggest trade chips they have available and if they can get a huge return it will have to at least be considered. Rebuilding sucks (trust us in NJ) but ripping off the bandaid and trading good players in their prime for big multi-piece returns can help expedite it.
Building off the first, it might be tricky for NJ to find the right pieces in a Swayman deal. While the Devils have great center depth at the NHL level there is really nothing in the prospect pool at that position which the Bruins certainly need.

Camp lines day 1
If Holtz can keep up in a top 6 role damn it makes us deep. Lots of talk about the Devils’ top 6 but if they can roll out Palat, Haula, Mercer as a third line, that has to be the best top 9 in the league.
Insulating him with Hischier and Meier makes sense. They can do most of the puck carrying and defensive work, theoretically should allow Holtz to focus on what he does best. He really hasn’t shown anything at the NHL level yet though so we will see.

McLeod definitely better than Stepan. But seems like it is more likely than not at this point he ends up suspended. Unfortunately not many options available at 4C, dont love Stepan.
Bratt can play LW and will probably have to if they want to keep the top 6 consisting of 96,13,73,63,86,91. Meier can play RW if needed I guess but I think Bratt is a better LWer than Meier is a RWer. If Holtz outplays Mercer or Toffoli and gets in the top 6 they can probably flip Bratt and Holtz on the wings.

All-time NJD Lineup
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>What’s the criteria? Got guys like Broten, Shanahan, Verbeek, who like Muller, started here and moved on. Guys like Mogilny, Fetisov, Gilmour, Jagr that were part timers. Are we counting KC and Colorado legacy guys like Lanny MacDonald, Wilf Paiement?
Some names to consider for bench
1) Petr Sykora
2) Taylor Hall
3) Dougie Hamilton
4) Coaches Lamaire and Robinson
5) Travis Zajac
6) Sean Burke (if he hadn’t been such a weenie)
7) Bill Guerin
8) Tom Kurvers
9) Jesper Bratt</div></div>
Ha sorry probably should have included a little description with what I was thinking.
Im basing off their time in NJ. So for example a guy like Jagr wouldnt be on it because his only season here was 43yo (even though he actually was pretty decent).
From there, tried to build an actual lineup as if I were making a team to compete for the Stanley Cup. So a guy like Hall is left off because I value him lower than Kovy, Elias, and Parise as a LW and I don’t think he fits a 4th line.
Couldn’t hammer down a proper 4LW, dont love Muller there.
Put some thought into combinations, went with the EGG line but A-Line could work as well. Just feel that Gomez and Gionta were more talented and had better Devils tenures than Arnott, Sykora, though it isnt a massive gap.
Felt bad leaving my man Travis off the list. He had a great Devils tenure. Just a lot of really good 4C types that might play that role better than he would.
Id go Lemaire for coach, his (almost complete) turnaround of that dreadful 10-11 team cements him for me. Love Larry too though.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheHowler</b></div><div>Not sure why the Devils would trade Dougie for a Tarvares rental. Pretty terrible deal for the Devils.</div></div>
I get it. I look at it as by 2024-25 I dont think we want/need Dougies 9M on the books with Marino, Nemec, Casey perfectly capable on the right side. I think all 3 will be better than Dougie at that point, and even if one isn’t ready it won’t be hard to plug a depth dman in to the 3rd pair.
Tavares won’t hurt us the next two years and then suddenly we have a lot of cap to work with to re-up L.Hughes, Mercer, Schmid, Nemec, Holtz, etc to their long term deals.

Lol Vanecek was 33-11-4 with 2.45 GAA and .911 last year. And Schmid is a promising young goalie who was, in my opinion, better than VV. Not saying Hellebuyck wouldnt be a fun upgrade but the “NJ is desperate for a goalie” thing is simply incorrect.

We arent in grow mode at this point. If we were, then you don’t trade for Toffoli and Miller. You let Holtz and Nemec play in those spots.
Right or wrong , we are building a roster with the goal of winning a Cup. It is far from guarenteed that Holtz and Foote are both ready to be strong players on a Cup lineup. This is just competition for them and insurance so that we arent one injury or poor performance away from Lazar, Foote, and Holtz in the lineup every game.
If they outplay Zach then by all means sit his ass. At one year 800k there really is no allegiance to him. But if he plays well he could be a great 4th liner. Really zero risk.
