Who I would have scouted in todays game between the Bruins and the Kings

We also have $5 million in dead cap coming off the books (Murray/Ryan/White/Del Zotto), Kubalik expiring, and the cap going up by $4 million.

DeBrincat for Karlsson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Brian_O_Blivion</b></div><div>Problem lies in Debrincat. He won’t want to sign here and the whole purpose of trading Timo was $$. Debrincat is going to get a similar contract to Timo amd frankly Timo has more value as a power forward. So it makes the ideology behind the Timo trade totally moot.
The value is fine.</div></div>
This scenario is a three way trade where Ottawa gets Karlsson, Detroit gets DeBrincat, and San Jose gets picks and prospects though.

DeBrincat for Karlsson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Brian_O_Blivion</b></div><div>How about no.</div></div>
Funnily enough this return for Karlsson is actually more than what the Sharks gave up at the time. 3rd liner (Tierney/Joseph), young depth forward with upside (Norris/Zadina), young defenseman struggling to find consistent ice time (JBD/DeMelo), similar picks (nobody expected that Sharks 1st to be 3oa).
I doubt the return for Karlsson will even be this much unless the Sharks retain $4 mil+, which they're reportedly not interested in doing.

This is a playoff team
The more I think about it and the more I compare this team with others the more optimistic I get. Obviously we're in a tough division but let's look at our division rivals this season:
- Florida: In a move to get a little younger and maybe to add a bit more grit, they traded away a superstar forward in Huberdeau and a top pairing defenseman in Weegar for Matthew Tkachuk. Huberdeau for Tkachuk is a lateral move at best, and I think people underestimate how much of an effect losing Weegar will have on the Panthers.
- Toronto: They still have one of the best forward groups in the league and are rock solid on defense, but Murray and Samsonov in nets is a huge question mark. On one hand Murray could have a fantastic season and/or Samsonov could finally be the goalie he showed flashes of in Washington, but on the other hand Murray could spend the majority of the season injured again and Samsonov could show that he's still making the same mistakes that he still hasn't learned from.
- Tampa Bay: Not much to say here, they're coming off their third Stanley Cup finals appearance in a row and aren't really losing much.
- Boston: This is definitely an ageing team up front, and with how many pending UFAs they have coming up I wouldn't be surprised if they see that the writing's on the wall for this team, that their cup window is all but closed and they start shipping out players to go into a rebuild. I certainly wouldn't blame them either, with how tight the Atlantic is looking for the next few seasons it seems like the perfect time to take a back seat, collect some young studs, and rebuild while the top six or so teams fight it out.
- Buffalo, Detroit, and Montreal: All three got better this offseason, but none added like Ottawa did and none are ready to take that next step this season.
Teams collapse randomly or unexpectedly every season in this league, just look at the Islanders and Knights last season. In my books any one of Florida, Toronto, or Boston could slip out the playoffs next season due to the reasons I mentioned above, not to mention the division being tighter and them not being able to score as many wins from the bottom four teams, leaving a spot open for Ottawa. Hell, two of them could miss and Detroit or even Buffalo could have an opportunity to get in too.
All of this isn't to say that Ottawa doesn't have some problems too, that defense is bad and the goaltending is a bit of a question mark, but I like our chances for this season and I can't wait to see how it goes.

Zaitsev isn't injured but this seems like a fair amount to pay regardless, maybe swap one of the 2nds for a 3rd.

I'm with y'all, what we really need is a defensive RHD like Tanev or DeMelo (sad), but with how much the D market has dried up I'd rather have to take a guy like Lundkvist than ice Zaitsev, Brannstrom, or even Thomson. Realistically Lundkvist, JBD, and Hamonic would all be fighting for that last 2nd pairing spot.

You say that's way too much and then put even more value lmao
I know we traded Stone for him, but Brannstrom isn't worth much more than a 3rd at this point to a team looking for a reclamation project. He'll be 23 when the season starts and is still struggling to be a consistent NHLer.

Now that Connor Brown is gone the only roster player we have who's really disposable is Erik Brannstrom if you guys are interested in him, unless for some reason you guys want Zaitsev. I'd guess it'd be Brann + Thomson (who looks nearly NHL ready) and a 2nd.

Boucher's trade value is at an all-time low, might as well hold on to him for now and see if he can turn it around. Shouldn't take much more than 7oa and a B-level prospect like JBD or Thomson to get Fiala anyways.

Ottawa isn't struggling to hit the cap floor, also Ennis is 5'9 so I don't know about adding him for size. He's a good offensive presence in the bottom 6, would love for Ottawa to keep him around another year or two but won't be upset if we don't.

Toronto and Winnipeg don't do those. Brannstrom is worth more than a 4th and if he isn't then there's no reason not to keep him around for another season to see if he can put it together. As far as I can tell Formenton hasn't been involved in any controversy unless I'm mistaken.

I actually don't hate it. Wouldn't give up 7 just to get rid of two years of Murray and Zaitsev but Schmaltz is a great, young top 6 forward with term on a cheap contract.

Maybe not what you're looking for but Brassard has made the playoffs 9/10 seasons since he left Columbus (Missed in 2021 with the Coyotes and from 2008-2012 with the Blue Jackets) and was known as a playoff machine from 2013-2017.

For Fiala I figured 7oa + Brannstrom, and Dumba would be Brown + 3rd, but Tampa's 2nd might be closer instead of the 3rd. For Norris the only thing that concerns me is that he's shooting at over 20% this past season which is almost definitely bound to lower. If he would sign for under $8 million for 8 years though I think we should do that instead though.

Realistically I could see two 2nds, only way we move a 1st is probably for Fiala, or maybe we retain like $1.5-2 mil and make it one 2nd and a late pick.
