My Ideal, Maybe Realistic, Team
I like this team too, I wouldn't give up much more for Tanev, though some other team might.
Johnson has really broken out this year in the AHL, he might be the logical choice at wing next season with Grundstrom getting AHL experience next year.

I like the team a lot. Close to what I would aim for. To me the pair Dermott-Carrick is very promising and I feel they're more than ready to pilot the 3rd unit next year, but the addition of Tanev is a safe choice. I always said he's a great fit for the team, so I wouldn't back up now. I'd resign Carrick for depth.
This lineup would be much improved defensively.
I still feel that we are not very strong at pure shooting. The numbers are misleading since the Leafs had a few high-scoring games at the beginning of this season. But aside from Matthews, we have lots of good skaters and playmakers, and few players with a lethal shot from the slot. We don't have many players who can take one-timers on the power play. I hope Kapanen or Johnsson could develop in that role. If trading with Vancouver, I'll seek to include prospect Reid Boucher in the deal, who, while still uncertain for the NHL, seems to be of the "sniper" type.

Random Jersey Speculation (read description)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Matthews34</b></div><div>Dermott has already played this year as #3. He isn't really an emergency call up. They haven't played a game since he was send down.
But Dermott used to wear #3. They moved him to #23 today.</div></div>
Thanks Matthews. Now I"m really confused. If Phanuef returns as a Leaf, the suicide hotline in Toronto will be busy.

Not only that, take some of their best players and flip them for low picks. Dudes a troll

3 way block buster
Why would Toronto make this deal? Anderson isn’t far off from price and is half the cap hit. And is less injury prone. Marner is just as good, if not better than patches and still on an entry level contract. This would be stupid to do with Matthews needing a contract extension in a year and a half.

Jel779. We don't HAVE to trade Matthews.
And it's the 19-20 year so the cap will be even higher. But Matthews will get 12+, but other 2 of big 3 is right.

Matthews to CBJ
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jel779</b></div><div>They won't let those guys walk either so they might have to start making some trades this year or next to avoid that problem. I'd rather get something for those guys than letting them walk.</div></div>
Bozak, Leo, probably Gardiner will be gone within the next 2 years. JVR is only staying if he takes a cut. That's 15 mill right there gone. Leafs have the depth at forward and LHD to let those players walk. The Hawks lost how many players for nothing after they won their cups? Winning teams go through yearly retools. As for RHD, they don't need a short term one cause they have Hainsey, Zaitsev and Polak (UGH) playing right side, then very near future after Polak is gone they'll have Lilegren playing and Dermott can also play the right side. Leafs are okay... not good but they'll be fine.
As for the trade itself... trade look good... if it was for Nylander or Marner.

Proposed Trades before Vegas ruined it all

They were actually going to accept it</div></div>
Anyone within the Bruins structure wouldn't be foolish enough to use that handle and spill secrets, so I highly doubt you are a "FutureBruinsGM". I'd never say it's 100% that you're wrong, but I'm honestly like 95% taking it in that your full of you know what and have no sources. Both those trades are brutal for the opposing teams and I'm a Bruins fan. I'd take either of the trades no questions asked because we snag the best player in either deal.
Moving forward I don't think you should take it too hard that these trades didn't work out. Perhaps we'll get lucky enough to get a better player by pairing Grzelcyk + Spooner together. Sticking them together with a pick would probably earn a better asset than Theodore or Henrique. I have a lot of faith in Sweeney at this point. I seriously wouldn't even mind if all Sweeney did was use Spooner or Grzelcyk to pair with Beleskey and get back a bag of pucks. Removing that contract would be pretty awesome in itself.

vancouver can get such a better deal for tanev, he's like a top 5 defensive defenseman in the league with a good contract and you wanna trade an unsigned 23 year old 36 point scorer

Neither team would do this. Why do Toronto need prime d-men? Simply cannot afford Tanev without losing Bozak and JVR to free agency, and Gardiner in 2 years to free agency, not worth IMO.
Reminder, they built this team we have now around drafting and developing, the previous 10 years we tried to shortcut it with moves like this.

Good Idea but I think the Canucks are looking to use Tanev if anything to make a bigger splash. If it doesnt include a top Line guy then im not sure Benning makes the deal.

Actually, I would totally approve that trade from the Leafs' perspective. It's not clear if the Canucks would do it, but they are definitely weak on the wings, so they obtain a promising player who'd be a very good fit for them. Great suggestion.
