Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 6 - Nearly Playoffs
Hockey is a very random sport, so anything can happen, but boy do I have no faith in this team for the playoffs.
Special teams are ass, D-core is brutal, defensive support from forwards is questionable, goaltending looking shaky

How many rookies you want in the lineup next year?</div></div>
Not so much "rookies" per say, just young players who deserve more ice time. Holmberg deserves a much bigger opportunity (he seems like the logical fit next to AM34 and Marner IMO), Robertson needs to be given a real look (assuming we dont trade him🤞) , and Steeves could easily step into the lineup next season. Rifai looked NHL ready in his few opportunities, and Dewar has looked great. All of those guys are super cheap and are only in need for a bigger role.
Allocate our funds to the blue line and let the young guys get their chances.

They didn't secure him though. It's still a risk he goes to FA and as <a href="/users/MatthewsFan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@MatthewsFan</a> said it sounds like it may be an AHL deal.
At the end of the day, I don't imagine this works out poorly. But I've been pretty skeptical of Brad's pick management so far, and seeing what we've been able to do in rounds 5-7 the last few years (Holmberg, Grebenkin, Voit, Tverberg, Chadwick already got an ELC...) I'm not really in the same boat as everybody who just seems to have the "meh who cares" attitude about draft picks. Would just hate to see another one out the door for nothing.

He blocked 100 shots in just 28 games this season which is absolutely insane. He skates super well, and is 6'6 which helps. No harm in trading a future late pick for a guy like that. Probably wasn't going to have a shot at the NHL if he stuck with the Canes given their amount of defensive depth</div></div>
If they know he's gonna sign, sure, but if you just traded away any pick at all for negotiating rights with a long-shot NHLer and then don't even sign him...

Out with the SOO and in with the new era for 2024</div></div>
He used the cap space right by bringing in players who don’t fit the system of the head coach HE DECIDED TO KEEP??? Holy f*ck your logic is mind numbing.
Klingberg, Reaves, Kampf, Domi, Bertuzzi. $16.4 million.

Without knowing what deals are out there for hockey trades, I prefer shooting for picks. It’s the universal currency and the cap space opens up opportunity in the summer. Just gotta hope Brad actually uses it right this time.
Can use the picks to help work out trades in the offseason or to supplement what is hopefully a much improved team come next deadline.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>The moment they resigned Willy selling went out the window as if your plan was to sell why not trade him for a haul lul. All the pending UFA's trade values are bland at best.
They are committed to these guys and you cannot waste a potential 70 goal Matthews season. They got games in hand on TBL and DET and show they need a Dman or two as they dont have issues scoring but keeping pucks out of their net.
Be smart and buy guys with term or RFA's. Who cares for picks and prospects wont be using them in the window anyways as your just gonna trade them anyway might as well do it earlier
As would rather go get Hanifin and extend him then wait 3 years for some kid to come and whose impact wont be set in stone.</div></div>
- Nylander resigning is irrelevant to what the proper direction for the team is at the present moment
-Matthews regular season goal pace doesn’t really matter here at all. They can’t do enough to make this team legit between now and the deadline regardless. This season is a write off as far as a Cup goes
-They are WAY more than a Dman or two away
- Just because you acquired futures, doesn’t mean you have use them in that manner. Flipping them is what I would suggest

I’ve already said it, been on it for a long time now, but I really, REALLY think the Leafs should sell this year. I think this team is a lot farther away than people realize and being in a position to capitalize on some pending UFAs to recoup assets shouldn’t be taken for granted.

Honestly would not surprise me if Keefe be a factor as to why Bertuzzi and Domi aint be doing well as we have seen it before
I got a feeling if Leafs traded Bertuzzi we would see the guy who was in Boston being a menace scoring, and being a pain. Guess he is another victim in the Toronto trap
If our goal was to get Celibrini that would be the roster for that only Matthews would probs ruin that lul</div></div>
There are exactly zero defensemen you could add right now that would significantly improve our defense group. Take a page out of St. Louis' book and sell at the TDL. Selling does not equal tanking. We are simply cutting our losses and recouping some assets that can be used to trade for a player in the offseason or to add a good defensive prospect. This years draft is so perfect for addressing the Leafs needs.
I already know we aren't going to sell (look at what Tre did with Calgary last year), but we 10000% should.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>I don't think this would be a downgrade tho...
Barzal would be a 35 goal scorer, 100 point player with Matthews... Marner would become a 80-85 point player in NYI...
You're right, this would be Treliving redeeming himself for the Tkachuk trade...
And need I mention that Barzal's signed until he's 33-34 years old? Whereas Marner, if he were to sign an 8 year deal, would be 36-37 by the end of his deal... For 3-6 mill more</div></div>
I said a few pages back that this roster is flawed and part of the flaw is the amount of $$$ allocated to forwards. A potential Barzal deal would not fix that even if he's 3 million cheaper because it's really not addressing the D at all with such a trade.
Ideally, trading Marner allows for acquiring/signing a top notch RD because that is a position that has been a sore point for this roster in this core's history.

The focus this summer needs to be fixing the Defense and with 4 guys eating a lot of the salary gonna need to focus there for now</div></div>
I wonder what Domi is thinking long-term. It’s one thing for us to assume he’d want long term security and would sign a lower aav to stay in Toronto. But he’s averaging about 5min less a game in ice time and, if it’s me, I wouldn’t be re-signing

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MatthewsFan</b></div><div>I’m curious, how are our Brad Trelivers doing?
Worried yet?</div></div>
I mean I'm not really giving up hope yet. Atleast we aren't buying into a team that we know is garbage. These are the growing pains of retooling a roster to fit a different mindset, like the 2019-20 Leafs. I have no doubt they'll figure it out, and I am a fan of Treliving's roster construction philosophies (that Calgary blueline was a work of art). I can't say that the results this season have really been surprising, and atleast the core is locked up so we don't have to worry about them
I'm not giving up yet. Whether that belief is blissful ignorance or not is yet to be seen, but I think the Leafs will be fine. Keefe will finish this season as head coach, the Leafs will make no major moves at the TDL (maybe a Robertson / Timmins prospect swap of sorts?), and we will get bounced in the first round of the playoffs. It'll be the same old story as always.
I personally like to think that the lack of success recently has fallen largely on our goaltending. This team will be fine when Woll is back. I also believe that this kind of forward group is EXACTLY what Treliving wants, but the blueline is still a long ways off. That'll be the priority this summer. For now, I want to see some strategic long term additions. Give me Alex Texier, give me Brandon Duhaime, give me Mario Ferraro (unless he costs more than like a 2nd round pick combined). Just be smart with our assets, that's all I want

I wasn't expecting the Leafs to go out and add a ton at the TDL regardless, but if for no reason other than the fact that it will cost a fortune to address the Leafs areas of need, I fully agree on the Leafs standing pat.
So many teams need a goalie, while few have Goalies to expend. So many teams need defensemen, and yet so few have defensemen to spare. There are no clear sellers to this point, and the TDL this season is going to be extremely competitive. It's just not worth the cost. Address the gaps in free agency with all the money we have and call it a day
