If Eichel Requested Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dommait</b></div><div>Blues dont do it .Dont have the cap and Thomas will be a 70-80 point scorer.</div></div>
I think if this is the package St Louis has to make the trade and sort their cap out later, notably moving Steen and maybe Faulk for example. I know this trade is purely hypothetical, but passing on Eichel on the assumption that Thomas will emerge as a consistent 70 point player would be a colossal mistake for the Blues. Eichel is on pace for 40+ goals, 90-100 point, top-10 scorer in the league as a 23 year old big-bodied top line centre on a bad team with no offensive support. But on the other hand the Blues are the defending champs so its not like they can,t win on their own so there is that ...

Perfect summer IMO
This makes sense more or less. With all that cap space they could add a few more bigger bodies though, its only a 22-man roster as is. Maybe a 1 year for Kovalchuk, just don't know what his motivation is right now and what he would cost. Or if not Kovalchuk, at least one more bigger FA winger for the 4th line to push Weal into the press box.

Tough call, they have missed the playoffs for so many years, but are finally positioned to make it and with McDavid anything can happen. Not really their year to hold back for some undetermined point in the future to 'compete'

Totally agree, especially with salary retained on the extra year. Petry makes his gaffes but he logs huge minutes in all situations and is super durable. He's proven he can play #1D minutes effectively if those in front of him fall to injury, which has happened often enough in Montreal. That alone has huge value for playoff bound teams where injuries can pile up unexpectedly.

Kovalchuk to PIT
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>gregb569</b></div><div>Be as that it may, I still don't like the value. IDK how many teams would be interested in him come TDL time (I'm assuming quite a few) and IDK if I'd want to give up much more than a 4th straight up seeing as he was a UFA and we could've signed him, just seems like bad asset management.
With that being said, I'd be open to trading a lower level prospect + a 4th and just see how it goes lol</div></div>
I think a 4th is a reasonable starting with perhaps some performance-based conditions. Given that Kovalchuk on the Habs has been playing inspired hockey, scoring on a point per game pace and even backchecking and playing good defence, he's shown that he can play still play elite hockey if he puts his mind to it. Its this last part that is the question. His time with the habs has been impressive but its a small sample size compared to how he performed in LA. So a 4th, if the Pens make advance at least 2 rounds with Kovalchuk playing XX number of games/scoring XX number of points its a 3rd, if they make the finals and Kovalchuk plays a big role its a 2nd, if Pens win the Cup and Kovalchuk is the MVP, its a first :p

The trades were made based exclusively on point production this season, not whether one player is actually better all around.

Habs Trade Kovalchuk to Boston
I'm surprised and delighted by how well he is playing, he looks 27 not 37 out there. I guess he's motivated to make sure his career doesn't end with a whimper as it seemed it would in LA - its clear that he is one of those enigmatic talents where his success is as much in his head as what his body will allow him. If he sustains his point per game pace in the next few weeks he might, considering his tiny cap hit, fetch more than this from a contender. Won't get a first though, too risky for the other team if he goes to a new environment, decides he doesn't like the coach or the system for whatever reason even if that team is higher in the standings, and regresses.

Steve Mason was already bought out and its automatic that he appears there. I think he's trying to show the lines he would use if them team is healthy. But even if all the injured players returned and did play on these lines, would it be enough?

Should Canadiens Fire Bergevin
He's amassed some interesting prospects, lots of draft picks in a deep draft, and large amounts of cap space to go into the summer BUT this HAS to be his last shot at rebuilding on the fly for a few years. If the team isn't obviously better by next season I think he should be done.

If CHI showed up with the 15th OA and offered us Nick Beaudin
anything less may be fair but isnt worth giving up Domi as there's more value in establishing him then selling him before he goes UFA down the line</div></div>
Thats a reasonable return from Chicago. Right now the only thing the Habs have going for them is they are not really burdened for cap space this year or next even considering Price and Weber (maybe in 2021 but remains to be seen) so there should be no urgency to unload younger players like Domi unless the return is incredible.

(BUF/MTL) - Scandella for 2020 4th round pick (SJS)
Scandella is definitely better than Reilly, even if only marginally, and they clear a contract space for next season, plus get a home town player and they pick up a minors player for their injury-depleted AHL squad. Good asset management by Montreal so we can call it a win but this will barely have any real impact in their overall season however since they are all depth players and late round picks moving

Another attempt at Lafreniere
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Detroit, Los Angeles, New Jersey, San Jose/Ottawa, Ottawa, and Chicago are almost certain to finish below you, and then there's Anaheim, Buffalo and Columbus, so it's hard to believe you'll fall much below 10.</div></div>
Except that here I have traded many useful players for scrubs and cap dumps, and buried promising prospects that doN't need waivers in the minors. With perhaps the exception of Detroit, all of these teams would become instantly better than the configuration of the Habs proposed here. Of course these are completely unlikely deals but its what it would take to get Lafreniere, a serious and deliberate implosion of the roster for the entire 2nd half of the season.

You won't be able to trade for a pick to get Lafrenière, remember in 2015, Bruins wanted to move their 3 1sts to Buffalo for 2nd overall, the gap between those picks is too big to make a move.</div></div>
You are probably right, but I am counting on, in this scenario, the Habs spiral down the standings and having a top-5 or even top 3 pick and another in the top 10 with the Rangers, so a little more possible even if they don't win first overall. But maybe they just get Byfield.

Maaaaybe Lehkonen. That might make sense, Armia is playing super well right now but more than that brings rare size that Montreal really lacks and would not be helped with the addition of Gourde.

Vlasic's contract is basically unmovable for meaningful assets because of its ridiculous length. His decline might be overstated but he is declining all the same and moreover his contract will have him being paid for 7 more full seasons, handcuffing whatever team acquires him for multiple seasons.

Take out Suzuki, Fleury, the 2nd and the Sharks retain a couple million and the Habs might consider it.
