It is usually safe to assume that whoever has trade protection has Winnipeg on their "no" list. Kampf declines.

I doubt it. Caps and Jets don't look like good trade partners in terms of assets.

Schmidt and Pionk are almost untradeable (unless you pay to offload) because their contracts are so inefficient. Two guys getting close to $6m each and they both should play no higher than the third pairing.

Just bury most of Reaves' cap hit in the minors or pay Anaheim to take him off your hands.

Just curious, have the blue jackets hired a replacement GM yet? I haven't followed them.

Always tough to talk like this about people and peoples lives, but here we are. Not exactly sure what would be in the return, but always partial to rhd dman and centers with team control, maybe severson/sillinger blockbuster could be kind of interesting. Probably take some wheeling and dealing, but that is what summer is for.</div></div>
That would be a wild move and would require a significant sales job by CBJ, as I suspect Ehlers would have them on his 10-team no list just given their recent record.

Tomorrow is the day for exit interviews / final media availability, so it will be interesting to hear Ehlers' thoughts on an extension (I assume the question will be asked) and what Perfetti says. Anything other than the typical talking points would make that day fun for the rumour mill.

Our blueline is too small or our big guys aren’t mobile enough or have zero hands. Our forwards are something similar, and it all leads to decent regular seasons and early playoff exits. Not complaining, but just tough, when you’re not sure your team has the potential to ever win the last possible game of the year.</div></div>
I think this will be an offseason of Ehlers extension/trade speculation and Perfetti offer sheet rumblings.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jazzykiwi</b></div><div>So does that return seem fair for Perfetti? Any roster players on the caps that may be of interest?</div></div>
The value is probably there in my opinion but the composition might not be, as the Jets will probably want a young roster player or young almost NHL ready player. I haven't followed the caps enough to know their roster very well but the Jets will need RD, as the only NHL ones they have under contract next season are Pionk and Schmidt (plus some prospects) :grimace
It promises to be an interesting offseason for the Jets. Bowness (team option or retirement); Ehlers (eligible for extension); DeMelo, Dillon, Monahan, Brossoit (UFAs to be replaced/re-signed); plus some RFAs to re-sign.

Offseason
Bowness doesn't seem to trust Perfetti and his 19G and 19A. Once Perfetti went on his 10-week cold streak starting in early- to mid-January my guess is that Bowness felt that Perfetti could no longer outscore his defensive issues. I don't know if Perfetti wants out, but he doesn't have much leverage.

I could see Ehlers moved if he doesn't want to re-sign. I guess the first chance of clarity will be the garbage bag day interviews. If Ehlers emphatically signals he wants to stay, then the ball is in Cheveldayoff court. If his comments are neutral or negative, then I can see a summer full of speculation like last offseason with Scheifele and Hellebuyck.
Edit: The Jets will have to give up someone they don't want to give up to get a top 4 RD.

Better to use a forward to trade for a better defenseman than TvR, Ehlers and Perfetti I can see in rumours this offseason.
Tanev isn't going to sign in Winnipeg and Hartman isn't going to waive. Dillon and Brossoit are likely gone. Also, with Lowry as the 2C, the team isn't making the playoffs.
My guess is that Bowness retires, he has plenty of legitimate off-ice reasons to do so.

Trading a 32yr old defenseman at $6m x 1yr for a 32 yr old defenseman $3m x 2yr contract doesn't really sound that appealing.

Provorov isn't a good fit for Winnipeg, as they need right side defenseman. Next year, they currently have Pionk and Schmidt as NHL RD under contract (plus some prospects).

I agree with Monahan and Toffoli not coming back, as they are probably priced out of the Jets budget. That said, Monahan has done his job well in his time here.
I think Dillon is gone, with the Jets moving Samberg up to 2LD and either Heinola/Stanley to 3LD.
This offseason they're going to have to either re-sign or move Ehlers, as he is too big of a piece to enter his last season with his long term future in doubt.
Edit: They will also have to decide whether or not to pick up the team option on Bowness (unless he decides to retire).
