Zibanejad would have to go as part of a deal IMO based on Friedman saying that</div></div>
I'm not even sure (age, contract, point production that I would even trade Mika straight up for Malkin. Might sound crazy but Mika is an elite player with an elite skillset that was really displayed this season

Winnipeg might move Ehlers this offseason so he would likely be his replacement. Also, Friedman said that Malkin likely would waive for Florida and NYR. So its very possible

There were two specific teams mentioned, NYR and Florida. FWIW

Shattenkirk is a very good player
Staal is a very bad player.
The difference in salary is less than the league minimum.
Staal will probably take a trade anywhere if it means playing vs. not or to be on a contender.</div></div>
comparing Shattenkirk to Marner is stupid. He's very clearly a shell of his former self. No team would take on Staal in all likelihood.

Smith has Limited NTC & doubtful OTT is on it.
Not enough dollars for Karlsson or Panarin.
Karlsson will get at least Doughty's AAV of 11 so say 7 @ 11million per.
Panarin will get 11 per at 7 from FLA , so NYR may have to outbid them (FLA has NO state tax & NY & NYC have state & local taxes) So say 5 or even 7 @ 12.375 per.
Fox might be had for NYR 2nd rd pick (from TB #58 if they get bounced by COLUMBUS, maybe they take a 3rd & Sean Day as a project) ) He'll sign his ELC with the NYR (or dare i say NYI)if they get his rights.</div></div>
Exact dollar amounts and term is pretty much impossible to predict until it happens. I can see Shatty potentially rejecting, but not Smith. He would be a top 4 guy there.

I believe it's likely that teams will be granted an amnesty buyout at the 2020 Lockout negotiations. In that case, if he continues to go downhill, NYR could use it on him. Similar to what they did after signing Brad Richards to that giant contract in 2012

Edmonton has a surplus of bottom pair RHD in Russell and Petrovic. This move would improve them greatly, plus JP's trade value is probably as low as it ever will be, but fair enough

Ottawa moves up an entire round and takes on a bad (not awful) contract in Smith to stay above the cap floor. Edmonton clearly needs to move on from JP, plus they'll get a top 4 dman at slightly less than $5M cap hit on a defensive desperate team. Adam Fox has stated he's not signing in Carolina and NYR are penciled in to get him already, this just speeds up the process and they get a solid top 9 guy in return.
So no, they wouldn't slam the phone down

Panarin big dman trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rja</b></div><div>Smith has a M-NTC, where he can pick 10 teams he can be traded to. Granted, if he wants to play a full season at defense and try to play for another contract at the NHL level, he may waive to go to more than 10 teams. However, I have a hard time seeing him waive to be shipped to OTT. If you want to move Smith, you have to find a team that has some potential to compete (at the very least on paper), and needs to fill spots on defense. I would think of teams such as Anaheim, Carolina (if they move of their defensemen for assets), maybe Minnesota (if Spurgeon is moved), and possibly St. Louis. I think it's also more likely he's traded for another veteran who needs new scenery. I am thinking Smith for Eaves; NYR save 1.2 this coming season, Eaves comes off the books then, and Anaheim is given another veteran on the blue line, and gives space for their youth to come up. Point is, the Smith to Ottawa proposal should stop being offered.</div></div>
Solid point but the Smith thing was hypothetical. I do still think he holds some value for a team desperate on D. I could potentially see him waiving for Ottawa, if they're even on his list. He would be a top 4 dman there, so you never know
