Leafs in 2020-2021 Veteran Presence
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>tampa has a surplus of defenseman they can sign for cheap (Rutta, Cernak, Shattenkirk, if they decide to keep bogosian throw him in there) so foote is probably staying with syracuse unless they decide to trade him. While foote is an all around defenseman liligren is more offensively gifted being okay in the defensive zone but not perfect. malgin is just a throw in as tampa can sign him for cheap and he can be a filler or flipped to another team for low picks. Tampa already traded 2 of their firsts and is probably regretting it. Getting one back for that price is a small price to pay but they would do it cause if this season is not coming back tampa would pissed.</div></div>
It defies all logic that Tampa who has serious cap issues, probably the worse in the league would ever trade Foote who on a ELC if he NHL ready.

Leafs in 2020-2021 Veteran Presence
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>Weegar has become a great top 4 defenseman with them especially on his off side with ekblad. Dermott is good but putting him on his off side and having liligren will make Toronto's right side sketchy. Foote has made bigger strides than liligren in a shorter span of time so trading for him is good. Plus with cap space if he does not work they will sign bogosisn to mentor sanding like he did with dahlin</div></div>
Both Foote and Liljegeren were drafted in the same year. If Foote really NHL ready you can be sure Tampa who have much bigger cap issues than the Leafs will keep him, instead a 1st rounder which may never help and 4th liner Malgin.

Leafs in 2020-2021 Veteran Presence
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>Dermott can play on the right but is he good there not really. Liligren is not ready for the big time yet. These trades help fix the dcore for next year cause lets face it a dcore being (Rielly-Dermott, Muzzin-Holl, Sandin-Liligren would be a disaster). Cause lets face it with a dcore like that freddie would be left for the wolves and have his lowest stats ever.</div></div>
????? What' special about Weegar to justify his contract and two give two Dmen just to acquire him. Again the silly notion that other teams RHD are stars and so much better than the Leafs players. Panthers spent 30m on their 7 Dmen, and the Leafs 20m....and where has got the Panthers. Why is Cal Foote ready for top 6 minutes but Liljegren isn't?

Absolute Worst Case Scenario for Leafs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mk458</b></div><div>I'm not saying it would actually be bad. Obviously them performing well would be the best case scenario! Was purely talking from a cap perspective</div></div>
What everyone seems to miss though is that having a core group of stars making big money isn't a problem. It's the blueprint in this era of hockey. TO will have a core locked up for the next 7 years. They also have the best player development department in the league, or at least the best funded. If their secondary players play too well and want too much money, they get traded and replaced by a Marlie for cheap. And the assets returned in the trade can be used to continually reinforce the depth on the club.
Paying depth players too much is what kills the cap. Not spending money on stars. Spend it on depth and you can't afford stars, if you can't afford stars you are Minnesota, okay but never great and you don't have the cap space to do anything about it because everyone on your team makes 4 million

A trade that might make sense
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>A Pesce/Nylander trade has logic. I would even say the Canes would keep Ferland and the pick. But to make the proposed trade "real" you have to show the salary that the Canes and Nylander would agree to. I'm sure the Canes don't want to overpay Nylander and then they have the Aho and Teravanen RFA contracts coming.</div></div>
I don't know man, Nylander for pesce sounds alot like hall for Larson to me... I think that if anyone is taking Nylander, they need to overpay for him by a decent margin.

It is an overpayment by detroit. I still wouldnt do it. Waited far too long for a franchise center. And thats no disrespect to the red wings players, all of whom are/will probably will be all stars.

Trading Eichel
They are building and I believe Zadina will be a true scoring star. Larkin is no Eichel but when you add Mantha and then Zadina you are really overpaying. Wings will not do it because they see Larkin as the next captain and Zadina as the next star. Mantha if he becomes the stud that he was projected he could be a 30 to 40 goal scorer. Not very plausible for Wings

Marner might want a little more, that is a super tight cap space but i guess it works. If leivo were to make the team this year I could see this contract happening. Overall not bad.

Think you're right about TDL trade. Tanev trade value will be highest if he's healthy and playing well.

I doubt Dubas will be shopping a first rounder unless it is for a number one RHD that has no injury problems that could keep him out of the lineup

Marleau uprooted his family last year to come to Toronto and they gave him a full NMC. I don't think he's waiving it before his deal is up.

Take out the fluff pieces. If you want Brown and Leivo, the Leafs would probably expect back Jankowski if they are taking on Stone's contract as well, even if some of it is retained.
