I mean it was pretty clearly a joke but yeah I don't think having to pay full value for McAvoy in three years is a good idea when you had the availability to get something done this off season.

Depth Dmen are a valueable commodity. we were using steven kampfer in games. so yeah thats valuable. And to move backes would have been a significant pick this year or a lesser pick and a prospect. those are assets. Toronto moved a 1st this year to dump marleau. Thats significant.</div></div>
Holding onto your 9th defenseman because you lost game 7 instead of signing the young #1D is not perfect cap management, it's sacrificing the long term for the short term. I'm not advocating giving up an asset to move Backes but if they're going all in and signing bridge deals it would make more sense.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>hanson493</b></div><div>While i agree that i wish they guys were locked up for more term. Its bad business to trade assets for cap room. Take the shorter cap hit now and deal with the larger cap hit down the line. Im sure there were future contracts already discussed when both players signed these deals. next year alone when they move backes and a 5th to ottawa (similar to lightning) that gives the bruins money to give guys. the cap is also supposed to increase significantly with a new tv deal in the next few years. This is perfect cap management.</div></div>
What assets would you have to give up though? Miller? I realize they’ll have room after this deal is up my point is that McAvoy will get paid like a top tier defenseman at that point.

A Miller trade gives them 7.9. Everyone keeps talking about how this deal is fine because he loves it here and he’ll sign a team friendly deal in 3 years, so if that’s not the case they’re really screwed.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Propeller09</b></div><div>Well, They are part of the new core. This allows them 2-3 years before they really have to pay out again. Debrusk, Coyle and Krug are next in line and they have enough money next year to sign them all with about 25m (Debrusk 5 x 5.50 -- Coyle 4 x 4.75-- Krug 5 x 6.75).
After next year they free up almost 20m in three guys (Rask, Backes & krejci).
This puts them in a great position. Three years from now their payroll will look amazing
1. Bergeron 6.875m x1
2. Pastrnak 6.66m x 2
3. Marchand 6.12 x 4
4. McAvoy 4.9 x 1
Their cap is in a great situation.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kscoop</b></div><div>Sweeney has this set up perfectly! Lots of money cap wise in 2-3 years.</div></div>
I mean I know they have a lot of room in a few years my point was that they’ll have to pay a lot more for McAvoy after his deal rather than lock him up now.
And I’d be surprised if Coyle/Krug sign those deals, think they’ll want more term for that AAV

For sure, it’s just if he was willing to take 2.85 you had the room to offer Chuck 7.5-8 and whiffed. But who knows maybe they both wanted bridge deals, I just didn’t get that sense from them.

I don't think Miller would be a cap dump, I think they'll get a decent (3rd? 4th?) pick for him. Backes half retained and a pick would help Boston out a little, taking on 75-100% of Backes should get you a high pick/prospect.

Actually he's a 10.2c free agent; I get he has no arbitration rights, can't be offer sheeted but McAvoy can just sit and wait until Bruins make cap space/offer him a better deal. That's not what we want. Stop giving incredibly low $ just because he has no " leverage "; his leverage is freakin <strong>time</strong></div></div>
Is he going to sit out the year? If he thinks he's worth 3x6 on his first deal, he's going to pass on 3x5?

He's a group 1 RFA and this is a bridge deal? What do you think he'd get on a 7/8 year deal?

I don't think they'll go less than 5M on a 3 year deal. If they really need to save money they'll trade Miller or go 2x3.5 with McAvoy.

Backes a P-Bruin
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Habhater</b></div><div>As it presently exists there is cap space of $2,903,334 with Nordstrom and Miller traded and Moore on LTIR. If you demote Cehlarik then the cap space rises to $3,603,334. Adding Nordstrom's AAV of $1,000,000 reduces the cap space to $2,603,334 which is less than the AAV of Moore when he comes off LTIR. Someone on the roster would have to be moved to make room.</div></div>
So the plan is to have no cap space for call ups/trades?
