Easily. almost by default playing top 4 minutes.</div></div>
I think he could wind up being a lot like parayko as well

I don't think he would get much more than 7.5? He is a tough one for me... He was surprisingly great defensively this post season, kind of changed my opinion about him. Carlson makes 8m and he is not as good as him. I think most would agree he is not a true top pairing guy, but his offense is elite and d is now top 4 worthy.
Right now there are only a handful of guys making more than than 6.75m (Doughty, OEL, Burns, Karlsson, PK, Letang, suter, weber, Ekblad & Carlson). The only ones he could really be in the conversation with are Ekblad and Letang & the major difference being FLA and Pitt needed that Dman and they were their best. Right now Krug is behind McAVoy, Carlo and maybe Chara (situational).

I think it’s really, really dumb to say that about a 22 year old d man. Most d men his age haven’t even played an NHL game yet. He started jumping up in the play a lot towards the end of last year, I think you should maybe stay away from the absolutes and terms like never for players you don’t watch much. Might make you look foolish one day.

The problem is McAvoy's only leverage is to sit out. Personally I give him a 3-4 year deal $6.5 range. By the time it expires he's still an RFA, but the big contract are off the books and the new TV deal will have kicked in (which hopefully means a big cap increase)

Leafs did not take cap space back. Backes costs less to buyout then Marleau with less cap hit. You want to use Marleau as the guide then 1st and Backes for 7th. Otherwise the return goes down as cap space coming back goes up.
Honestly, neither team does this one.
Lot better shot at Backes 2nd mid level prospect for Nash.

TORONTO HAD TO MOVE MARLEAU TO SIGN OTHER PLAYERS. Marleau was owed his full amount. Backes is owed less actual money. If we get to next year he will have 1m salary and a 6m cap hit. you will not need to move him for a first and a 40 point player. Wennberg had one really good year where he shot 11.9% He is a below average faceoff guy, cant really shoot the puck (career average 8.2%) Wennberg isnt worth what is being given up for him. Not at this point in his career. Riley nash would be a better return for the bruins.

It’s kind of amazing how incorrect this post is. Burying him would save 1.1ish million. Yes, the bruins have about 6 players that are better than backes that get paid less than that. Healthy guys don’t just go on ltir, but no player in the nhl has more concussion issues than backes.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Gofnut999</b></div><div>That’s just it. They can pay 22.5m over 3 years to Ryan for mediocre production on a mediocre team. Or the so something like this retain 3m on Ryan, buyout Backes and it saves 11m out of pocket, plus they add a couple of decent assets. The retention and buyout cap hit help them stay above the cap floor the next couple of years while keeping payroll down and they can play the kids getting their feet wet for when it’s time for them to actually make some noise.</div></div>
This is exactly why I think this trade would work. Exactly something Melnyk would do/want!
