He's had a dozen concussions, I'm not saying it's likely just that if he really hates Ottawa/Providence that much, he'd pick that over retiring.

I'm pretty sure players making 1M affect the cap, with a 23 man roster (Backes included) they're closer to 9.5M in room and the cap crunch is gone but the Bruins just signed Lindholm and Ritchie so my guess is they prefer them to Backes. Backes to LTIR would solve the issues this year and next.

Fair enough but if you trim down to 23 players, you'll have closer to 9.5M in cap room which is plenty to sign Carlo/McAvoy

They already have 25 players on the roster so they'd get the full 1M in savings from sending him down as they wouldn't have to call anyone up. He's had multiple concussions and just had surgery, I'm saying if he really doesn't want Ottawa/Providence he would go to the Bruins like Callahan/Robidas, and they'd happily pay him so he doesn't have to retire.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jamiepo</b></div><div>That’s not how that works...</div></div>
They don't have to replace him with anyone because they already have too many players on the roster, so it won't be 1M minus 750k, it'll be the full 1M.

the. other. option. is. providence. I honestly think Ottawa is more likely than providence, if not I could see him retiring/going on LTIR but I think the hold up has been Sweeney not wanting to give up picks not Backes' NTC.

They have 25 players on the roster, they get the full 1M savings

Boston takes on a longer contract and gives up a first? Hard pass. A first is enough to dump Backes not take on Ryan's contract. The people talking up Ryan as a playoff performer must have missed Ottawa trying to use Stone/Karlsson to dump him. He's not that player anymore, his contract is a liability not an asset.

Yeah I mean I don't think Sweeney personally would do it, he loves Krug, but the Bruins should do it. Bruins are fine on the PP, need 5v5 players.

Boston isn't giving you that nevermind taking on Glendenning. Lose all the picks (both sides) except the second and it's close.

Eh this is more about Zucker. I think a second/low level prospect (eg Senyshyn) is fair value for a floor team (not MIN) to take on Backes but Frederic and Zboril isn't enough for Zucker.

Boston fans overrate local kids so much, Hanifin is a fine second pairing guy but not worth Heinen+.
Would need to retain 50% on Backes for MIN to even think about that.

Ryan Donato BOS and MIN fans come here
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MelonVK</b></div><div>They probably "gave up" on Blake Wheeler too early as well, but it also probably got em the cup. That's how these things go. Generally, clubs hold on to prospects, especially first round picks, way too long for my taste. Just because someone turns out to be a good player doesn't make it wrong to give them up at one point in time. Every 5th or 6th rounder has a chance of being the next Klingberg or Stone, so teams should never give up on those players if they followed your methodology. But you can't work like that, you have to think in terms of probabilities. Boston deemed it more probable to win a cup thanks to Coyle's contribution in the next two years than with Donato for however long they can keep him, and I agree with that decision</div></div>
Wheeler was also a much better/more established player when he was traded. We think Donato ends up there but Wheeler was almost doubling Donato's production when he was traded.

I think MIN fans are also overrating the guy based on a few good games right after he got traded. He had six primary points in 22 games (with another two on the PP), he has a good shot but is a third liner (with second line ceiling). Boston is in win now mode and got a good 2/3C with term.

For a UFA? No chance, look at what Stone got (top prospect and a second) and that was with an extension.
