Well, what are they losing besides Clutterbuck? Varlamov has been the declared starter and the Sabres need a goalie. Bellows might be an ask, but a second rounder for him is fair...

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rhea</b></div><div>You don't think Buffalo gets a little screwed here?</div></div>
The issue is that there aren't many teams that can take on a combo of Eichel or Hall (Hall being a "rental") and at least one of Mittelstadt/Dahlin/C Miller without having to eat some o f the Eichel or Hall cap hit no matter how many picks are involved and that the Sabres don't go on the roster hit.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ToqueLamoriello</b></div><div>
Wait so Vancouver gives up the least and gets the most back? Sure.</div></div>
Like Buffalo, Vancouver needs a shake up. That team is way too talented for them to keep busting as they have - far more than that of Buffalo atm. To the Above point of shorting the Sabres, a lot of that is Pearson would be one of those "rentals" and anyone of the guys whose contract is up (with the likely exception of Hall) can go back to the team from which they were traded in the offseason.
Overall notation:
Tampa bay has more NMC and NTCs of their important players than BUF or VAN, that impacted heavily who got moved. Where the pieces from Tampa went was strictly cap based.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dzinger18</b></div><div>I think its gonna cost a lot more for Eichel.</div></div>
I don't disagree... I wouldn't have had the Sabres eat 35% of Eichel's contract but anything less and it would complicate Arizona's cap. I was originally going to include Mittelstadt and add a few more pieces from ARZ and NYI but I couldn't get the financials quite right... even if the Sabres ate 50% of eEichel
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>Good song. Horrible trade. Did you mix up the Aho’s?</div></div>
I would like to note that this is one single trade. There were a few players in all directions that were meant to be flipped . But in order for those to be true, there needed to be a catalyst trade. I also had to work with roster limit of 23 for BUF so I could give all the picks in the world and it still wouldn't eliminate cap problems for both ARZ and NYI. It took me 45 minute to get the financials in it's current alignment.

Seems a lot for a short-term fix, but with who all is able to walk at the end of the season moves need to be made. They don't need to be the 100% best move or fit, but things usually get worse before they get better in most situations and everyone knows it

I fell over at that Ducks deal. Ducks won't want to give up Getz for that specific grouping. Sabres wouldn't improve by getting Getz for what they're giving up.
I honestly don't think you even need Riikola in that PIT trade, maybe have each team swap (uneven) picks.

Girgorenko definitely the biggest stretch here. Looking at his KHL numbers as solid, not that they'll necessarily translate back to the NHL. The Mittelstadt thing is hard to maneuver because some say he is staying and others say going and because of that, his value will not be as finite as we'd like to perceive. Now that NJ has done a few things, Hall may be more inclined to stay at the Pru. With the Vegas thing, Many are on the fence if Thompson is a bust, especially considering how the initial trade with O'Reilly went down. And if Scandella is going to be one of the proposed salary dumps, then there might as well be more substance as opposed to buying him out while also Vegas didn't have the cap space to absorb any of it whereas the Sabres shouldn't retain any of it either.

I'd stay away from the Anaheim trade if it were me and I think Tampa should add a pick... i.e. change the 2019 3rd to a 2020 2nd or a 2021 1st... something far down the line is totally fine...</div></div>

I would agree with that - but the Sabres, if they dump Mittelstadt, probably won't give up less (or more) than a pick for him. Perhaps in the very best case, Columbus doesn't give up a pick.

I'm not sure if Trouba makes sense, and Scott Wilson could work in Buffalo. Even if you remove them both, it's a solid trade. However if there must be more moving parts than just Risto and the pick for Lowry, I'd probably say Morrisey from WPG for Hunwick. No reason to bring Vanek back in this case. I'm not sure that even if the Sabres were aggressive that Duchene is in WNY. Use that money to go after Erik Karlsson who wants to come back east (despite the high risk on him).

Ottawa is not a team I'm familiar with compared to 2-3 seasons ago and this is a live roster hence a work in progress. I chose Ottawa because they had the league's worst record and wanted to tinker. Was hoping to see what people's impressions were so as to learning about the team.

As for Tkachuk - I still believe in the need of enforcement line contrary to the supposed shift away from aggressive hockey. Haven't figured out what to do with Ryan yet but doesn't have a future - need at least modest return for him. Temporary defensive fixes - also want to see how preseason goes for young guys to know who makes roster.

Perhaps because I'm not a Sabres fan who couldn't care less about what my fake Sabres team is copmared to the current one, who hasn't been in the playoffs for almost a decade which is three times as long as before this current playoff drought.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabres1108</b></div><div> You are making Cody eakin out to be this great playoff performer...Dallas never got anywhere when he was on the team and Vegas just got eliminated in the first round this year...sure vegas had a nice run last year but hardly due in part from him- Eakin had 4 points in 20 playoff games last year?
Cody eakin just set a career high in points this year with 41.....
Eakin’s “invaluable playoff experience” does us no good if team is so terrible that it doesn’t even make the playoffs!!
again, Vegas just got eliminated in the 1st round with Cody eakin as their 3rd line Center....So now you want him as our 2nd line Center and somehow thats going to lead to postseason success? omg</div></div>
Actually I'm not... I never said he was a playoff performer, just that he's got it. Experience is experience, for better or worse. It is also in Eakin's case supposed to be a reason for him to push harder to get better. So would him being a vet on a young team.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabres1108</b></div><div>Reinhart had 42 his rookie year lol

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabres1108</b></div><div>this is the stupidest argument ive ever seen on capfriendly. i cant believe u r seriously defending this trade...if your going to get someone with playoff experience you can just sign a guy like Jonas Donskoi who has just as much playoff experience without having give up anything. Nonetheless trade away a young, top 3 forward on the team for a pending UFA 3rd line center.</div></div>
I'm not defending the trade (though it may appear so) given that this is a _fictional_ scenario. This may be an armchair gm thing, but don't treat it anymore than that. This is purely experimental. None of us in this forum are at any time going to actually get paid to do it. Also, how many times have we criticized moves initially that seem to suck and then everyone backtracks when it works. Okay the same happens in the reverse to. But at least I will own up to it when it happens. In this case it never will so I wouldn't get bent out of shape for a (probably unrealistic) hypothetical.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabres1108</b></div><div>and McDavid a one dimensional goalscorer/shooter? like dude wtf are you delusional? hes 2nd in the entire NHL in assists over the past 3 seasons.... assists also include rebounds to the eventual goalscorrer.</div></div>
I don't include those as assists as they weren't necessarily intentional. But also being multi dimentional is more than assists, and if assists are considered points then is it really another aspect of the game? I'm not saying he can't do other things or improve on them - everyone can even the greatest and the greats will admit to that. Matter of fact, his game has been evolving to the point where I think that he could break some of Gretzky's Oiler records.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabres1108</b></div><div>Nylander is not a 4th line player

You lost McCabe for nothing?
Ristolainen is not a good top pair D man
Dahlin on the 3rd pair is absolutely ridiculous
Sobotka shouldn’t even be in the NHL</div></div>
Call me old fashoined, but third line is a physical line.
I agree, but I'm working with the cap until both him and Hutton are can get moved.
Olofsson is maybe starting the first month in Rochester, performing well enough when called up to stay up permanently and get a handsome contract.
Some reports suggest Ullmark is on the way out to let Luukkonen be the guy and that he's perhaps better than Ullmark. I'm playing with that narrative for now.
Rodriguez hasn't performed consistently enough, but he is still rostered (no clue where).
McCabe is Still on the team but isn't showing up... he was supposed to be on the top line where Risto is and Risto on second pairing. That is why Dahlin is on third pair also; didn't think him with Bogosoin would last long term since Nelson isn't yet a second line defender.
EDIT: They are listed as their rights as RFAs are still on roster but for whatever reason not on here. I gave McCabe a new contract. I didn't originally grab a new goalie since there were no good and under thirty goalies. So I just now decided to be more aggressive in the goalie search and pick up Bobrovski (who has done far better than the next name in Varlamov).

If they traded Cody Eakin for Samson Reinhart Jason botterill would be ran out of town immediately...</div></div> But this is not suggesting that Botterill should or will do. Reinhart had the purported potential that we are only just seeing from this past season. I reiterate that Eakin's playoff experience is quite valuable to this organization given the circumstances worth a shorter term deal or extension. Even if Reinhart is the price of it.
I'd dump Eichel, but I'm not that stupid enough to walk away on his natural skill set and vision. I'd sooner dump McDavid given that he's merely a straight up shooter/goalscorer whereas Eichel is more of an all around player. But my problem with Eichel is that often he has too much patience as a playmaker. One might rather take those stupid ineffective shots from the point the Sabres were taking in myriads four five seasons ago though one Wayne Gretzky might suggest they have nothing to lose taking shots like that. I don't mind that Eichel is scanning the offensive zone like a QB does in football but when you're holding the puck for a minute or more waiting for a play to develop you'll need to do something with it.
