Now before you crucify me for not understanding taxes, their are many different things to factor in. Your overall income tax in Ontario is about 53%. In North Carolina it is approximately 44% on an $8M income. Sales taxes are far higher in Canada, property taxes in Toronto are higher than, say, Tampa. Food costs far more, gas is more expensive, housing is more expensive, and the price of living in general inflated Canada’s numbers. It’s not blown way out of proportion, but it plays a big factor in how much a player makes.

Actually I’m wrong. The income tax in NC is a flat 5.499% with no advanced tax bracket system. In Canada the income tax is 33.333% on all income over $200,000. Florida has no personal income tax, which is why you saw Kucherov take 9.5 and why Point will take 7-9. Matthews and McDavid, while being called greedy, are actually making an average of 7.75 (Matthews) and 8.33 (McDavid). McDavid is getting paid the same as Stamkos and Matthews is making the same as Ekblad. Taxes play a huge role which is why players get bigger contracts in Canada. On the flip side, Canadian players tend to get a lot of endorsements from off ice entities because of the hockey culture. I’m actually from the US and I now live in Canada, and believe me, the tax difference is unreal! If I was a hockey player, there’s no way that I’d live in Canada unless it’s where I was from.

He’s easily been the best all around forward on the team so there’s no way that he goes anywhere. Also I doubt that Aho makes 400k more than Matthews. Factoring the 7% income tax on Aho and the 33% on Matthews, I feel like Aho sign for 7.5-8 million.

Johnson will be exposed in Seattle expansion where NTC clauses dont apply.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BOLTLOVER1</b></div><div>And if you look at face off % .. Miller is very solid and always has been and over 50% .... Gourde takes 4 faceoffs a game and Miller takes 6-7. I agree that Miller is excellent and it would hurt to lose him. Johnson is the one that I want gone. He’s a shooter, but doesn’t score enough goals to make him valuable. Also, he’s taking away playing time from Cirelli who has quietly been one of the best players on the team. Miller vs Gourde is just a matter of opinion. My problem with Miller is that he is a creator who doesn’t create goals. He creates offence that turns into shots and OZ time. I wish that TJ didn’t have the clause that he has. It would solve issues. Thankfully when him, Killorn, and Miller/Gourde are gone in 2020 Raddysh, Volkov, Stevens, and Barre-Boulet will be able to more than replace them.

Why no love for Killorn or Miller
Killorn’s contract is more than what he is worth, so he’s going to be an obvious trade once Vasilevskiy needs a new contract. Miller is one of two players that carries a cap hit and has a limited NTC, Gourde being the other. One of them will have to be traded. They are both very underrated and exceptional players, but the cap restricts super teams. Miller has less offence in him, doesn’t kill penalties, and isn’t as good in the faceoff circle, so personally I’d trade him. He’s excellent at creating offence, but Tampa has a ton of guys like that. He’s more replaceable than Gourde.

Question
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>exo2769</b></div><div>Why does Callahan waive his NMC? He wants to win and that's the best place to do it. TBL certainly does have a wealth of prospects, but there's ZERO chance an offer sheet happens. GM's aren't that stupid now that Garth Snow and Chia are gone... They see the tight situation TBL's in. MAYBE you can move other players...with large cap hits...that don't have a NMC, but this TBL team next year can barely fit under a $90M cap let alone an $83M cap. TBL will be in the same position as TOR was with Nylander, BUT the difference is that TBL doesn't have the cap space. That's why NO other team will offer sheet. TBL's in a position were they're FORCED to sell something. Whenever you're forced to do something...(Stan Bowman...Bickell/Tuevo for scraps...Sharp/Stephen John for Daley) You get FAR FAR less in return.</div></div>
I agree. Though Callahan’s NMC is a 16 team list. It could turn into a deal where Tampa deals him to a team in exchange that the other team buys him out and Callahan sign a low 1 million or so deal with the Lightning. A Steve Mason type trade. Or maybe just send him to a team on his trade list. The Lightning will be tight, and teams will want Tampa to pay for moving Callahan, but with Gourde/Miller.... those guys have value. They’re solid top six players and trust me, if one of them goes, Tampa will get a slightly below fair/fair price. Teams don’t bail at the opportunity to grab a young top six forward with term on his contract. They’re rarely available except for a king’s ransom. Schenn was going to cost a 1st, a solid prospect, and another pick/roster player. Imagine what Miller or Gourde are worth with far more term. They won’t get a killing, but it certainly won’t be scraps. Especially when teams like Buffalo, Carolina, etc. are looking for scoring boosts. Offer sheets don’t happen to elite players. I agree with you there. You’ll pay less in a trade than in an offer sheet. But I think that Tampa is set for next year. They’ll take a few losses, but they’re deep in young players and they’ll be a President’s trophy candidate again next year.

Question
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>exo2769</b></div><div>Let me answer the questions a different way. He won't be a Bolt...so 8 years $9.5M</div></div>
Why? Like Tampa won’t match a 9.5 million offersheet. They easily can do it. They’re honestly not as tied in the cap market as some people think. Ship out Miller/Gourde and Callahan and they’ll have a ton of space. Cernak can replace Stralman, Sergachev can play on the opposite site too if necessary. Foote will be ready, and they have a wealth of prospects to replace Miller or Gourde. I’m saying this to prove that Point will stay because A, Tampa is the best team on the planet by a mile, B, they have the cap space to match almost any offersheet, and C, honestly if it gets too high, take the 4 first rounders and shoot for Panarin. My prediction — 6/7x9-9.5

Screw You Islanders Fans
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiantBoots</b></div><div>I care. Actually, I'm kinda wondering how this affects the players in the future. Are free agents going to want to play for that crowd? Will players be more open about their thoughts as they approach free agency, or less open? I'll be keeping an eye out for some kind of Tavares effect.</div></div>
Yes but no. That kind of a crowd is one that would fun to be on the good side of. Also, Tavares is a much different case then most UFAs. He was their franchise center and 1st overall pick who said that he wanted to sign with them so he wasn’t traded, then signed with a conference rival for about the same as was offered him by the Isles and and left his former team with nothing. That’s rough. A big name UFA isn’t and will never be in that position. Could you imagine if Matthews at the end of his contract told the Leafs that he wanted to resign, then jumped ship in free agency to sign with the Rangers or Capitals? Ouch. The Leafs fans would hate him for it, but that wouldn’t stop anyone from signing with them. Plus, the Isles are a top 2 division team with a team built for the future and a ton of money to spend. I doubt this affects them at all. Good grief, Toronto and the Rangers have been known to boo their own players but it hasn’t stopped them from signing free agents.

Would be nice if it was an offer sheet from a lottery team as those Islander picks would be late firsts for the next 4 years.</div></div>
Except that you get 10 million in cap space, so Panarin would seriously consider an offer. Think of it this way, four 1sts and 10 million worth of free agents. If that ends up being Panarin and four 1sts for Point..... Tampa doesn’t match an offer and laughs as they go straight to the top again with a ton of picks.

Why not
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hackadart</b></div><div>1. Offer sheets don’t happen, love how SN an TSN just talk about it cause it’s the leafs, WIN and TBL will be in the same position this season but no one talks about them getting offer sheeted
2. Leafs can go over the cap in the summer so they can match an offer sheet and then if it happened they can trade Zaitsev or someone after to make it fit before the next season starts</div></div>
The issue is that Point would cost a team 9-10 million in cap space minimum and 4 first round picks. Connor is at risk, going he’d have to agree to leaveLaine is not. He will be the same as Point - 9-10 million and 4 first round picks. Johnsson and Kapanen can be offered 4 million each with better term if desired and it costs a team one second. That’s not bad at all. I doubt either will sign an offer sheet, but the Leafs are more susceptible that way. 40-50 point players are the most likely candidates of offer sheets.

Hughes or Kakko
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Best player right now is Kakko. He's putting up better numbers in a mens league then Hughes is in a kids league</div></div>
82 game projection: USHL-Liiga
Matthews: 164 - 76 Granlund
Eichel: 154 - 74 Barkov
Hughes: 134 - 59 Kakko
Connor: 117 - 59 Laine
Tkachuk: 113 - 42 Kotkaniemi
Guentzel: 100 - 41 Rantanen
Boeser: 98 - 37 Teravainen
Gaudreau: 98 - 36 Aho
Larkin: 82 - 24 Kapanen
Personally I think Hughes is better, but it’s just interesting to see that Hughes has put up points similar to franchise centers. I didn’t include busts, but there aren’t very many from the US and Finland. Those systems have done remarkably well with developing prospects.

Cool. I really like the explanation, but I feel like in two years we’ll be in the playoffs and not looking to shop rentals. We’re a couple points out now and have yet to see Hughes and Demko make an impact. Not to mention Juolevi’s arrival the following year. I don’t want him to have a full NTC either. I’d rather give him a 20 team NTC and make him submit the list next year. Then the options would be open if Juolevi progresses faster than expected. As for the contract itself, 5.5 with a full NTC, 6 with a NTC becoming a M-NTC, 6.5 with a M-NTC, 7 with a NTC-nothing, 7.5 with M-NTC to nothing, and 8 with no clause are my projections. I’d bet on the 6 million option. A NMC is interchangeable with a NTC in that chart.

Or the Sens could do something cool like dealing for Trouba and taking Kulikov and Perreault, and paying Trouba 15 million to get to UFA next year. They could take on Callahan too. That’s 4 players worth 30 million on short term deals. It’s better than getting tied down long term with anchors like Backes and Lucic. Trouba is in a rough spot and has to either sit out the year or play, and with Winnipeg in control of where he goes, I bet if the deal went through with the Sens that he’d play for the one year if they could give him the sun and moon and have a NMC attached so he could pick where to go at the TDL.

Winnipeg Wanted Stone - At what cost
I feel like either Vesalainen or Roslovic were required by Ottawa and Winnipeg wanted to keep them. Also, I wonder if Winnipeg wanted to pay less and keep Stone as a rental and Ottawa wanted him to extend so they could get more. The no. 2 LHD prospect (arguably) in the league is a really high but fair price for Stone. I’m guessing Ottawa said Roslovic, Vesalainen/1st and another pick and Winnipeg balked. They got a pretty good deal for Hayes.
