Offseason
The Hawks will be eating more then $5m a season for 4 more years with this OEL contract and proposed retention, for the Hawks to do that Vancouver will need to give up a lot more and get nothing more the future considerations in return.

Even with retention, it easily costs VAN's 2023 1st plus to dump OEL. Getting the TBL 1st back in that trade is not in the cards. I wouldn't even send the 2nd round pick back.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OilednGreasy</b></div><div>Actual 4-5 million $ UFA's do not just sign on the worst teams in the league. 1-3 million $ UFA's get overpaid by those teams.
Other ACGM's have nothing to do with anything real, and should not be used as actual information. Look at similar past trades, use stat sites, and read reporting on hockey to inform yourself.
Here are Raddysh and Yamamoto's last 3 seasons in the NHL at even strength points, <a href="https://www.naturalstattrick.com/playercompare.php?fromseason=20202021&thruseason=20222023&stype=2&sit=ev&score=all&stdoi=std&rate=n&p1=8479390&p2=8479977&loc=B&gpfilt=none&fd=&td=&tgp=410&lines=single" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Raddysh vs Yamamoto</a>, and remember Raddysh is a year older and Yamamoto was injured for most of last season.</div></div>
Good thing for the Hawks who are not good and will be in full tank that there are plenty of 3 million dollar UFA's they can overpay for a year or 2 (and they only "need" ONE OR a cap dump). So we are doing a 3 year comparison with one of the players that has played only a couple NHL seasons (one of which was as a 4th liner on a Cup contender}...how convenient for you. We wouldn't want to compare the players situations of one being in an organization that was deep and winning back to back Cups while the other was in a top heavy organization looking for anyone with a pulse to fill depth roles. Or that one has gotten every opportunity to play with the likes of McDavid and Drai and the other has been on putrid Hawks teams. The fact that Yama was hurt is not an excuse, it is actually the POINT. He is injured multiple times every year and that is not likely to change for a midget playing a man's game. Sorry , but AGM's are a pretty good gauge of value if you throw out the extreme's on both ends of the spectrum and look to what the consensus is between rival fanbases.

Well who can argue with that? If Yamo was better than Raddysh, Oilers would be fielding offers for him, not trying to dump his cap hit.

Hawks obviously decline. OEL, even w/ the retention, costs #11 just to move out.

No one is taking on 4 years of OEL at 8.25M for 10-15 spots in the draft.

Jones is probably in CHI for the long haul. I doubt CHI is going to punt on him after all the assets Bowman gave up unless they can get a more significant return. This is not even close.

I love how CHI is throwing in a 2nd round pick for the honor of taking Carter's and McGinn's embarrassing contracts off your hands. Very realistic! Why not make it a 1st.

How it ended up was a bit underwhelming, but CHI definitely got more than what you proposed. They just pushed it out further. Niemela and Kerfoot are not worth what you think they are. Also, Domi probably has more trade value than Lafferty.

No, you can't. JP is at a point where he's not worth much of anything.
Lafferty is cheap, signed beyond this season, and playing really well; JP is the opposite of all those things.

If it was just next season of retention on EK, CHI probably says yes. But, with 4 years left on his contract AFTER THIS SEASON, it'll cost at least one more significant piece, if not more.

We knew McCabe, I wonder if it's both. This creates a logjam at RD of Jones/Murphy/Zaitsev.

Hawks decline. They aren't trading away any 2023 picks - definitely not a 2nd and 3rd. Bryson has no value to the Hawks. And Portillo is a good prospect, but Hawks have a full pipeline of young goalies (Soderblom, Stauber, Commesso, Bassie). Can't see how Portillo fits in or why he'd sign in Chicago.

You're right! But he doesn't get to dictate if Hawks trade McCabe in any deal. So the Hawks can yank McCabe and rework the deal from there.

He is a dump to any rebuilding (non playoff) team. If he has value in the Leafs opinion and they want to move him, the only landing spot to get value for him is a playoff team. There's no "he has value because the Hawks can flip him" either as that's not how trades work. Teams don't help out other team's cap problems for free.

In real dollars it ends up being under 9 million</div></div>
Still, a single 1st isn't worth the opportunity cost, that's a retention slot gone for 4 years for what could be a very late 1st in a future draft.

Hawks would get more for that much retention for 5 years. Laffery for a 2nd so factor that in also
