By February maybe
I was just saying the same thing to a friend of mine, i genuinely think going after Fleury wouldnt be a bad idea because it is a double bonus, his $ allows us to hit the cap floor which we need to do but also gives a great mentor for Hogberg and on top of that by putting the money there it allows Management to do what they keep saying which is play the young kids, because otherwise the only other thing i could see us doing is Overpaying C. Brown, Duclair and Tierney to hit the floor because if we go into Free Agency to spend money that takes spots away from the young guys which again they keep saying they dont want to do. So Fleury is logical OR Matt Murray but my concern there is term... Fleury is 2 years and he's gone Matt Murray can get you the $ to hit the floor but do you want to sign him to 4+ years?

Cap space galore
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>csick</b></div><div>too much for Melker. And the reason they bought out Ryan was to open up cap space for guys like Chlapik, Abramov, Balcers, etc. They wont sign veterans</div></div>
As much as i want to believe that it still doesn't really add up because they had 18million in cap space BEFORE buying out Ryan, with the cap adjustments thats going to put us at 22million just to hit the floor. I mean if we assume the C. Brown, Duclair and Tierney fetch 10-12mil total between the 3 of them, I feel like Chlapik, Abramov, Balcers and even Paul for that matter aren't going to total 6+ Million i just don't see it and even if it did NOW we still need another 4mil just to hit the floor which then means we do need to either trade picks for players or sign veterans and potentially over pay some people to come here for 1year.
I think it's a weird move personally.

Return to play - Question about the Ottawa Senators
A co-worker and I got discussing the Return to play and how it will play out as the draft lottery looms it got us thinking we know the bottom 7 teams for sure but with the return to play you have 8 additional teams who will fall out of contention for the playoffs and be re-slotted (If i understand it correctly). This means that the NYI pick (Currently 21st i believe) under a worst case scenario should they be swept by Florida could this potentially give Ottawa with a 3rd Top 10 pick or would they just fall back to their original spot once eliminated? I know the NYI is lottery protected so it cant be in the top 3 but if they did get eliminated right away how does this play out.
We weren't sure and there is a lot of conflicting information that I've found.

Byfield and Stutzle
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Zbaddest</b></div><div>Dorion said the Sens will be taking the best players, regardless of their position, with those two picks. And the Sens already have good D-prospects, so I don't see them going for Drysdale, though if they do, I'm not complaining. Ottawa has Jacob Bernard-Docker and Lassi Thomson, hopefully they'll be in the top 4, and they can draft other d-men later in the draft. If Byfield and Stützle are as good as scouts are saying they are, I don't see how Ottawa can miss their chance. Drysdale is really good but I don't think it's smart for Ottawa to draft a d-man so high in their draft when the forwards are too good to miss.
If anything, Ottawa might draft Rossi because he plays with the 67's and because he's more consistent. But I don't think Drysdale.</div></div>
I agree with this, the one thing lacking in Ottawa right now is top end Forward talent. We have solid D and now that they have officially signed Zub going for a D man that early just doesn't seem logical, pick two forwards in the top 5 (Wherever we land) and then if we really want a D man use the NYI pick for that. Although i could see us packaging that pick with a 2nd to move up if there is someone still on the board we like. There is no way we draft all 13 picks we have.

Trades Draft Two Years Projection
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Claesson4Norris</b></div><div>As much as I love Quinn, i think you have to try for an RD with the NY 1st.</div></div>
I mean technically you have JBD, Thompson who are both RD + Brannstrom prefers playing the right side + Zaitsev and Jaros play RD so picking up 1 D in the first round sure but not 2 as we still need more high level talent for a Top 6 because thats our weakness depth wise.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SammyT_51</b></div><div>He is a pure winger. NHL.com has many wingers listed as centers for some weird reason.</div></div>
NHL.com is fake news... but regardless RW or C i still couldn't see them taking 3 forwards in the 1st round as much as we want to improve our Top 6 the two at the top of the draft should be able to help do that + what we already have so a good quality defenceman later in round 1 makes more sense.

If Season Cancels
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Smithcd995</b></div><div>The season is being cancelled per a few inside sources of mine, but you didn't hear that here. Regardless you don't think the other teams would complain if they take away the lottery and just give it to the worst team? That makes no sense to me tbh.</div></div>
Now that it's official and its only suspended at this time it's safe to say everything once it gets back to business will be status quo. However a fair discussion would be the removal of the lottery and how people would complain. In the end everyone would complain. Because lets say they keep the lottery and we take any bubble team right now. They are in the playoffs today so not eligible for lottery but what if they fell out of the playoffs in those last 9-11 games then they would be eligible for the draft lottery. so If we keep the lottery Bubble teams will find it unfair because of the what ifs, so do you increase the size of the lottery to include said bubble teams? or do you just say screw it and have all 31 teams in the lottery? but then now you have 15 Teams mad because 16 Teams who were eligible now are. So thats where the thought process of simply old school format is the simplest and "fairest" and i put that in quotation because realistically no option will ever be fair to any set of teams.
BUT since the current statement is simply postponed meaning they will resume it's safe to say it's status quo and none of this matters.

Big moves
I dont mind this strengthens the D core and allows the young forwards to develop further in the NHL (batherson, Norris and Paul) although id likely swap the 2nd and 3rd lines. Not sure how interested FLA would be as they're more in a Win Now mode and although Logan Brown im sure cracks the lineup Lassi Thompson and the 1st are more likely 2-3 years down the road.

I would hardly call it "Hopeful" we are basically guaranteed two top 6 picks possibly even 2 in the top 3. It's simply being realistic about what COULD happen. We simply dont know until the NHL says this is their plan. If things get worse they could 100% cancel the rest of the season and playoffs especially if we start seeing players contracting the Virus like the NBA is starting to see. I would hardly call this scenario "hopeful" but one of likely only 2-4 possibilities if we are being realistic.

If Season Cancels
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Smithcd995</b></div><div>What exactly is the reasoning to not use a lottery with the current standings...….?</div></div>
With the possibility of 10+ games per team being cancelled this would result in some GMs/Owners likely complaining about the fact that they could have better or worse odds had the remaining games been played ON TOP of the fact that there are some teams who could move into a playoff spot or fall out resulting in them having or not having a chance to compete for said lottery.

Im inclined to agree the question becomes how does Ottawa make the cap floor (whatever it is) and what does the NHL do with the rest of this season/draft which we dont know.

No way Tierney gets that much $$ and that much Term, With Norris, Brown and likely a Center from the upcoming draft + you already have White i doubt they sign him longer than 2-3 years and for around 3-3.5

I would expect longer term and less money for Boro. Management has already said theyd like him to be here long term but i couldnt see them giving him more than 5yrs x MAX 2 mil and even 2 is probably high. I wouldnt be surprised if Connor Brown, Nick Paul and Duclair get a bit more than youve signed them for an they try and pick up the hossa contract for the yotes to hit the floor.

Ottawa 2021 - With Lottery Luck
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ThatGuy</b></div><div>You'd trade away L. Brown to move up 20ish spots in the draft??</div></div>
As previously mentioned by Csick realistically you'd probably have to trade up to 9-12 to get Quinn but i was using the ranks on tankathon and as such it would be 20ish spots but could be upwards of 30+ spots. As it stands Logan Brown has only proven to be able to play in the AHL and seems lost in the NHL. I hope he gets another chance before the end of the year to prove us wrong but he's had ample opportunity and hasn't been able to deliver and if we pick up a Stutzle or even a Rossi/Perfetti/Byfield etc. they quite possibly all end up slotting above him and Logan brown i dont see in a bottom 6 Role and we are light on Top 6 wingers. We could move him to the wing maybe but even this seems unlikely. As said this is a less is more and moving up into a deep first round could be worth the gamble and I dont see any other players valuable enough to move up with.

Yeah I just went purely off the Tankathon results. Of course the orders could change but just thinking of a Draft result like this Not only did we get Quantity we got some serious Quality and I may actually believe Melnyks comments finally.
