If your Detroit by now you know what the teams are going to look like at the start of the season at the time that Johnson went on Waivers last time no one knew how TB was gonna get out of the cap crater they were in. They managed with Kuch going on LTIR and Ott trade. If your Detroit and have nothing but cash and aren't going to be competing for a while why wouldn't you claim Johnson and flip him for a high pick after you retain half his salary..

2018-19 maybe a somewhat realistic expectation
The point of the Lucic and Sekera deals was to get capspace. What is Nurse going to want? Maroon was a great Oiler and he has shown he can score 20-30 goals over the past 2 years. If you could sign him for relatively cheap he is worth it. Maybe how much I retained is too much but having 10M is worth something if you can make a deal at the deadline if your in the hunt for the playoffs.
