Understand, I would think if Poile was wanting to move him, he would want either a 1st rounder or promising prospect. Thanks for feedback!

22.5 million is not less than 6.1
He took that money to make sure MTL wouldn't match, not because he's a greedy kid. 4.5 is a fair contract for him.

I dont think that deal gets you Miller, let alone Miller and the retention.
And its a quantity over quality to CAR for Pesce. (Not to say that Kerfoot or Dermott don;t have value, but CAR is taking too much salary back and Ritchie and Mikheyev add a large negative factor) For a certainly playoff bound CAR, no way do they move Pesce unless they're wow'ed. The picks are good, but I think they'd need a Pesce replacement (Holl) and instead of those 4 players: a quality prospect.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Drakin1978</b></div><div>pretty sure Caulfield will be a rfa group 1, 10.2c not offer sheet able when his contract expires. Please correct me if I'm wrong he has not played 3 pro seasons as this will count as his first I believe, he only played 10 regular season games and is considered a rookie this year</div></div>
I looked at the current CBA for the NHL very carefully before making this post.
http://www.nhl.com/nhl/en/v3/ext/CBA2012/NHL_NHLPA_2013_CBA.pdf
This is what I saw on page 30 that was key:
"For the purposes of this Section 10.2(a), a Player aged 18 or 19 earns a
year of professional experience by playing ten (10) or more NHL Games
in a given NHL Season, and a Player aged 20 or older (or who turns 20
between September 16 and December 31 of the year in which he signs his
first SPC) earns a year of professional experience by playing ten (10) or
more Professional Games under an SPC in a given League Year."
My conclusions:
1. Cole Caufield was 20 years old when he signed his SPC on March 27th.
2. Cole Caufield earned a year of professional experience when he suited up for and participated in his 10th game of the 2020-2021 season (May 12th against the Edmonton Oilers).
3. Cole Caufield needs to play 10 games in each of the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 seasons to earn the three years of professional experience needed to be given an offer-sheet.
Barring some unforeseen circumstances, Cole Caufield will be eligible for an offer-sheet from the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2023 off-season.

He's not leaving money on the table if literally no one is giving him $6.1m going forward. The Canes gave him that to get him over and then they'll sign him to a longer term deal at a reasonable cap hit.

Technically they don't - that cost is only relative if they want to keep his RFA rights. They can sign him to a different kind of contract during the 2021-22 season if they like, and KK is willing naturally.

1. I apologize for calling it your crap offer when it was someone elses crap offer that you chose to foolishly defend
2. "4 1sts" is really vague, he is still very likely worth that and probably returns value close to that.
3. Is it worth some retention? I mean like Buffalo's not going to retain so thats moot.
4. So my post count on a public forum coralates to my mental stability? Ok then? No idea why you decided to start being toxic to begin with but sure man, whatever

Top 6 winger
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Tom Dundon has come out publicly and said he dislikes rentals. That is a fact.
They've targetted one player who was a "rental" and that was in the VERY unusual circumstances when both Pesce and Dougie were hurt. They have publicly said they do not like the idea, it's bad asset management</div></div>
The description literally says that Forsberg comes with an extension.. read first before you comment ignorant things next time.
& if Forsberg does come with an extension, it costs a hell of a lot more than this. Carolina has held onto top picks for awhile, but if they wanna get over that hump and be a serious contender, moving 1 within 10 years is a very small price to pay. They have the prospects in the system that make their 1st round pick for the next 2 years expendable. If you ever wanna beat the teams like Tampa, the Islanders, etc. then they need to add more scoring. A pick won't help you win while a team is in their most competitive window, an all-star like Forsberg will. So if holding onto 1 top pick is your deal breaker, have fun never winning a cup and watching free agents leave even more because the team doesn't show them that they're willing to do what it takes to win.

I don't see any chance of Stepan being better than Staal. Carolina is a better team, he is the captain there, and he would be the 3C on both teams, so he wouldn't get a bigger role in Pittsburgh.

How Trades work
How trades work - usually you need to understand the other team's perspective to make sure the trade makes sense for them..
Kerfoot is a fine player and the value here isn't bad. The problem is, Canes just re-signed Marty and while he's very replaceable on the ice, they brought him back for his locker room and off-ice contributions as a leader. This is especially important with the TDA signing and some of the other pieces that have left in the offseason (Dougie, McGinn, Foegele). Additionally, Kerfoot doesn't really plug a hole that the Canes have. They're looking for a top 6 winger.
As such - Canes don't do this trade.
