its a bridge deal and he can get paid big bucks once its over. He's not getting more than 8 on a bridge deal

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if you're right. But even if Gardiner is gone, Hyman might still ask for too much money because he'll be 29 and UFA, his last chance to cash in.

Because his results in those 37 games show that he's that capable. Do yourself a favour and educate yourself by actually looking at stats/reading articles instead of speaking from your backside. Subscribe to The Athletic and maybe you'll get what I'm saying

Yeah I agree Hartman was a completely different situation: hes younger and he was a former first round pick so he has that draft pedigree. Also, he was still gonna be an RFA this year (Nashville re signed him now), but still a bad trade for Nashville.

IMO gardiner is more valuable to this team than Hyman. Hes arguably a top-pairing dman and whether the "eye test" believes it or not, the stats back it up.

"Third line grinder" scored 40 points last year, and yes ik that was on Matthews wing, but he's gonna be glued to Matthews or Tavares for the next two years and I think 45-50 points is easily a possibility. A first rounder may be unlikely; I think a second rounder is more realistic, but my point was that I think they should trade him before he hits UFA and wants a ton of money

Thats funny. Dermott is arguably already a top-4 dman, and Gardiner is a lowend top pair dman. I understand that you're a habs fan and so it may be hard to recognize talent.

ahhh didnt realize palat had a NTC. I think Miller could be put in that deal instead of Palat, and it wouldn't make a big difference.

You do realize Stamkos was incredibly close to signing with Toronto, but he actually had a sick team in Tampa. Tavares has a pretty shitty team in the Islanders and a legit chance to win a cup with the Leafs. Check my part 2, all of Karlsson, Doughty, and Seguin are UFAs but none of them signed with the Leafs. I think Tavares is the only realistic option

Calgary has lots of cap space to work with when JVR and Bozie become UFAs so it shouldn't be a problem to re-sign them

Shattenkirk
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div><i>I guess why can witness the fabulous Blues defence tonight as they play the Leafs. Folks get really got up in stats. Talking to some my Blues friends, some think Shattenkirk is the third best Dman on the Blues. And the Blues are just a middling team like the Leafs. Hardly worth top money as a NHLer maybe not even justified in the top 20 NHL paid NHLer Dmen.
Elite shot suppressor and goal suppressor? Check this stat, Shattenkilrk has the worse plus/minus of any Blues Dman. To me the means he isn't a goal suppressor. He does get most of his points from the PP....18 of 34 points.
Even if Shattenkirk came to the Leafs with the ridiculous 2 year contract, do you think it really jump the Leafs much high in the standings (like he's done with the Blues)? Underpaid Zaitsev, Brown, Hyman. Having Corrado on the team isn't an improvement.</i></div></div>
If you're seriously gonna use plus/minus as a stat then I'm not gonna argue. But shot suppression and generation is proven to be more predictive than plus/minus. He's elite in those categories. Zaitsev is by no ways being underpaid. Examples of players around his age around that salary: Muzzin, Martinez, Micheal Stone. Browns and Hymans contracts are supposed to be bridge contracts, you don't give middle-six forwards long term contracts outta of their rookie years. Lastly, Corrado is so clearly the 7th dman...smh

Show me proof that shattenkirk is not a 2-way dman. Go look on corsica or look at some hero charts. He is an elite shot suppressor and goal suppressor. Just because a d-man does not look like he is good defensively does no mean anything. Look at weber. 6'4 should be great defensively but is proable the worst defender in the league in his own end</i></div></div>

I beg to differ. The point of the high salary is that Toronto has lots of cap space for the next 2 years before Matthews and Marner need their contracts. It's also an incentive to sign a shorter 2-year deal rather than a long-term deal worth around 50 million. Lastly, there's two ways to win, by being much better defensively or by having incredible offensive scoring depth, which is what Shattenkirk would give us. Look at the Penguins from last year as an example.

Let the Rangers or Bruins blow their brains out with Shattenkirk. There will be plenty of deals out there next year to upgrade the defence.</i></div></div>
Look at his advanced numbers on corsica.com. He's a two-way beast.

I Like this Defense (probably a little tilted in Leafs favor)
I believe that's a bit of an overpayment for Stone in the trade and the signing. and an underpayment for Zaitsev. Bozak should not be exposed in the expansion draft imo because he has great chemistry with Marner and Jvr and provides center depth. I dont think signing Stone fixes our problem on D, we need a top-2 right hand d-man not another top-4 one. So, trying to sign Shattenkirk would be smart imo. As for Calvin De haan, we don't really need him on our third pair. We have Marincin, Valiev, Loov, Neilsen who can all fill that spot.

Last year SJ became desperate though. This year they have a young cheap backup that they like.
Greening has disgusting value so I doubt they are willing to even touch him.</i></div></div>
Greening provides good secondary scoring, and if the Sharks want to go deep in the playoffs again they'll need that. They also get a more stable backup in Enroth, in case Jones goes down with an injury. On top of that, they get two second rounders for a first and third.

Leivo socred 5 goals in 9 games last year, he has a lazer shot. And, Griffith is a small skilled player who has and can play in the NHL. On top of that, Tampa won't have much cap space when they have to re-sign Drouin, Johnson, and Palat, and they'll have to trade him for below market value
