I don't know a lot of people who would leave $20M on the table unless there is a reason. Tavares passed on more to come home. Matthews plays in hockey mecha. The spotlight doesn't seem to bug him. Not sure why he would pass unless LA makes a better offer.

Maybe the team that was caught ignoring sexual misconduct and sanctioned for it doesn't take a risk on a player implicated in another sexual assault...

Edmonton went to the 3rd round riding an injured 40 year old Mike Smith. This is most certainly an upgrade. That combined with the fact the their comp (COL mainly) has downgraded in several key areas over the summer means that there's no reason to doubt Edmonton's ability to go all the way.</div></div>
Definitely an upgrade and if healthy - will be a great help. But he gets hurt a lot. He is lights out for 40 games - but 50+ playoffs might be too much based on his track record. Toronto is weaker after losing him for sure unless Murray / Samsonov suddenly improve.

Campbell is great until he is overplayed. If Skinner falters, that's a big risk. Campbell was a top 5 goalie in the first few months of 21-22. He was very good against Montreal and Tampa. He just wasn't good enough against 2 of the best goalies in the league. Like Toronto - it's good enough to get 2-3 rounds in, but likely not enough to win.

I wouldn't recommend an untested backup and Campbell as your goalies. Campbell is good but isn't likely to play 60+ games. You would need Skinner to play 30+ to ensure he doesn't get hurt a lot - see TO last year.

Fair comment - but Zaitsev is a $4.5M per year with $2M bonus already paid. He is $7 M over 2 years for a team reaching for the bottom is the cap floor. First is fair - Monahan, Marleau were both $6M+ for a 1st. But Mrazek ($3.8 M over 2 years) was swapped to downgrade from a late first to a high second.
Somewhere between perhaps

Fletcher fired Flyers blow it up at deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>No it really wouldn't. If Gardiner plays well this season (because Carolina can afford him and will likely put him on the second powerplay unit) he will more than certainly gain value. His issue is that he was injured. When he's been on the ice, he's been worth his contract. This is what I don't get. When he's healthy he's fine. It's like Pacioretty. When Pacioretty is healthy, he's incredible. When he isn't he's an expensive decoration.</div></div>
I like Gardiner and hoped he'd hit it in Toronto. But it never quite worked out. Good - sometimes. IMO (uninformed as it is compared to real scouts, pros) - lack of consistency kills. 3 hat tricks a year is great, but not if you score 12-15 goals a season (3-6 goals over 79 games). Gardiner is still a lot of 'what if'. If this season is another What If - he is a cap dump

If anything, it would cost less to dump him then with most of his salary already paid and him not having any term.</div></div>
My point was most GMs would ask for a pick to take that contract. Then you need Necas + for Konecny.

1st, Thomson = two firsts (but better because you know what you are getting roughly with a near ready prospect)
1st, Jarventie = same.
Debrincat went for a top 10 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Not exactly the same, but with Chabot and Sanderson - not sure they will sell the farm. Eichel went for two former first round picked prospects, a conditional first and a second. Hard to argue Chychrun worth more.

Thought this is well done but maybe overly conservative.
Calgary has a crowded Blueline already. Not sure they need another D.
At TDL, I think this is selling low on JVR. If Rakell can pull 2nd, decent prospect and players feel like JVR could be more like 2nd, 3rd and a decent prospect (Savoie maybe - former 4th). Perhaps take a player back as needed.
If taking Gardiner (I assume cap dump) then probably need a first or two picks coming back. Konecny probably can get Necas +. 2nd would be the price to take Gardiner.

Best comment on this I've seen is <a href="/users/csick" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@csick</a> who noted most teams don't have space for that cap - making it harder to get a second. But a consistent 50 pt, 20 goal, penalty killer with speed not worth a second?! Teams trading for him would likely be in the top 10 making it an advanced 3rd. At the TDL he'd be worth a 1st+.
Keefe likes having him because he can move up and down the lineup, do a lot of things. You have to have that kind of versatility to be a winner.
I get why he might be in play, but trading Holl seems more likely IMO

Sensed
I think adding another Dman is a mistake. Sens are going to make great strides this year and have 2 RHD who could make the leap in Thomson and JBD. If De Haan was only being signed as a backup option if both aren't ready I could understand that but not sure the message to young prospects should be "you aren't part of our future"

Couturier would be perfect
I Couturier a lot. He contract is great value for a bunch of years. But not sure he ie Eichel-level value. It's 3 firsts and former 1st (technically) in Monahan. This trade could end up being lopsided if Monahan regained any of his previous abilities after his hip issues. Philly would say no to less than 3 firsts (they have no reason to deal him). Put this down as imaginative and creative but unlikely?

Dubas FTW
I could see Anaheim going for Muzzin. Warren might be a price to high but an 18 yr old D man (big RD) is a gamble. Muzzin would give Anaheim an incredibly good D core. He could also be a great TDL player along with Klingberg to haul in a lot more. It all hinges on how healthy he is.
Possible - but maybe for less?

Brannstrom needs a new start. He came in with massive expectations and hasn't been a defensive or offensive upside player yet. Still young but a new team might give him a new outlook and opportunity. He doesn't seem to fit well with Smith (a Dman's damn in his days) as a left shot RD or an offensive Dman. I see it like a Tyson Barrie scenario.

Kerfoot is a fine player, though, and we would probably pay a third for him if we were interested in a rental.</div></div>
The Copp trade is probably a closer value for Kerfoot. Kerfoot has higher points per game, faster but smaller. Kerfoot is slightly younger and played fewer games.
NYR paid a former 1st end prospect, 1st, 2nd and a 5th.
Unless they had to trade him, I think any team would offer a lot more.

Kessel isn't coming back to Toronto - he hated the attention and media scrutiny. He certainly isn't coming back for league minimum. He had 50 points on the worst team in the league. Maybe TBL gets him for that, but not Toronto
