Yes, please. I spoke to a "mid-level" media relations friend of mine who works for the Caps (just yesterday). Someone who attends every PR and GM meeting and who helps draft the exact statements that come from the mouths of the GM, AGM, and others...we IM'd and voice called while the Caps slept thru the Boston game yesterday...his exact words...from GMBM's exact words.
"We are looking forward with any moves we are making. Clearing salary cap to retain our core. Bolstering draft positions. Protecting for upcoming expansion. Hockey trades player for player or using the talent pool to solidify weak areas."
- First off, this means using trade chips: Bura, all the LHD depth down the charts, maybe Riley Barber?
- Secondly, re-signing Copley ensures Samsonov stay in development mode in the AHL for next year and gives the Caps a year to make the decision on re-signing struggling and aging Holtby, or making a move of their franchise netminder to promote Samsonov if ready, and have an NHL caliber #2 in Copley. Also having Coley under contract protects the franchise netminder in the Expansion draft. It is a smart move getting him ~$1M/yr.
- Third, draft pick bolstering: GMBM thinks they've done a great job creating defensive and goaltending prospects...he thinks the forwards are thin. This could be a forward deep draft, I think he wants to deal off some people he does not see in the future of the org for some chances to reap younger assets.
- Fourth, lastly I don't think anyone in the front office has designs on loading up for a back to back Cup run. I see and hear them saying "the future" A LOT. nothing says we have to be buyers and make a run this year. They are enjoying having won it last year and seem to be moving on if this year turns out to be a "blah, blah, back to the old Caps..."

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DoctorBreakfast</b></div><div>I'm guessing the three year deals are due to the Seattle expansion draft. The third year allows them to be exposed.</div></div>
You nailed it. Contrary to what some others are saying, this actually supports the idea that the Caps are going with Samsonov long-term as they’re ensuring they have a different goalie that satisfies the exposure requirements.

I'm guessing the three year deals are due to the Seattle expansion draft. The third year allows them to be exposed.

I'd value Jarnkrok more than Simmonds actually. Plays all over the line up and on a great contract.

Edmonton Oilers signed Mikko Koskinen (3 Years / $4,500,000 AAV)
I would have given him a 1 year deal. There is not nearly enough of a sample size in the NHL for me to feel comfortable with a three year deal at that AAV.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pross</b></div><div><a href="/users/CrustyPieMan" target="_blank">@CrustyPieMan</a> I totally agree! The same unit can't keep up with the rest of the league's improvements and no team is underestimating Vegas anymore, so its likely the Golden Knights will struggle this year. The money going around Vegas right now seems a little off. Every player their paying this season is from one good year's worth of effort.</div></div>
McPhee is contradicting himself w/ these overly lucrative deals. He wouldn't offer Karlsson a long term big money deal, but he gives away the store to Tuch, Theodore, Pacioretty, Stasny, Fleury, and Schmidt. I don't get it. I understand why he had to pay the UFA's (Stasny and Pacioretty) big money, but he had a lot more leverage w/ the RFA's, and Fleury most certainly would have taken less. He rewarded these guys for last season's miraculous run, but we've all seen this backfire so many times in the past. You need to pay players for what they'll do in the future, not what they've done in the past. Look at the huge mess in DET as one example.
