Sorry aadoyle, we well-seasoned Leaf fans know this type of trading only leaves the Trophy Shelf as empty as the Barn.

Ok, I don't claim to know Steve Simmons nor do I claim I could write for the Toronto Sun so I'm not sure what to say to this. I'm just expressing my view about the team I have been watching for 45 years now.

Is it possible that Leafs can outscore their defensive liabilities to win a 2022 cup?
We all know it, even if we won’t admit it aloud... the way this team is built has too many problems and no space to fix them. So why practice poor asset management when you know you are defeated. Being an original 6 team can be a curse. It took bravery for Shannan to “scorched-earth,” recalling he said, “we will have patience and do it the right way”. Well, it’s becoming more apparent that the right way now is a mini-retreat. I don’t like it, and I would never have agreed to it then, but if we fail to read the signs, we will watch all that promise we felt early in the rebuild continue to fade away until nothing is left but an empty barn. Another sad truth we must all face is the Tavares signing disrupted the PLAN and is now the cap-clamp that is ailing this team. Our scorched-earth-pain earned us Matthews, Marner, and Nylander; they are our true core we must face it before it is too late.
Johnny must go now, not in the offseason. I fear the cost otherwise!

Giordano
Why Blackwell?
I haven't seen Giordano (38-years-old-LHD) play this year, however, his game has been on a decline for half a decade now and I fail to see how -21 plus/minus is going to help the Leafs address their defensive woes.
The days of throwing away futures for legendary names with heavy legs need to be buried forever.

Approved Fix For Leafs Number One
For the Leaf's this would be a bandaid on top of a bandaid. Not interested in Braun, Crouse, or Konecny in any way.
Crouse's style of hockey is so 90s and officiated against in today's NHL
Konecny is comparable to a grossly overpaid Bunting. (Bad Contract Value)
Justin Braun (35-year-old-RHD) seriously, are you suggesting getting rid of 22-year-old RHD (projected as a top-four) and a 25-year-old LHD #6 in fair value?
FYI, Sanheim (6'3", 181lbs. LHD) is no defenseman he is basically a winger playing defence. Simply put, he has poor defensive numbers and this guy is going to fix what ails the Leaf's
I think not PeteKyte

Too much futures from Leaf’s for a Gamble, and Kessel nope, no way, been there got the T-shirt. In Fact I believe we are still paying for him to leave. Well worth the price if you ask me.

But at least a conversation could begin, but no guarantees. I admit Nylander typically rides the roller coaster production-wise. But his value is well suited to his contract. Trading him would be a mistake.
Chychrun is a LDH and I truly believe Sandin will rise in a reliable top 4 LHD making Muzzin expandable if not already.
As for Schmaltz I'm not interested much, to be honest! so meh!

Interesting, I would never have thought someone could undervalue Mrázek like this. Let's be clear, it is not like either is a bonafide starter anymore. So it comes down to the contracts and more specifically Toronto's narrowed cap space. So on that basis, this could work. Clever proposal! But I would pass at this time.

Monahan is or was a quality player. Not sure that is the case anymore. Nonetheless, I don't see how adding him helps fix any of Toronto's areas of concern.
Plus, why would the Habs ever help the Buds by taking on useless salary for only a couple of 4th round coin flips? Just bad business for the original 6 rivals.
Now, I can see why as a flames fan you'd cross your fingers, but I let me say it to you straight... not a chance!

I don't see why Nylander is in this trade.
Chicago announced they are committing to rebuild, so... wouldn't that make Nylander's age problematic? If a rebuild takes five years to regain contention status, Nylander will be 30 by then, with a career of disappointment and loss behind him. Not a recipe for success.
Also, not sure how De Haan fits.
He'd likely be 3rd on the Left Side, which only supplants Sandin's and Dermott's development path. Sorry, we need a stay-at-home top pairing right-handed defender... De Haan is not that.
Gabriel, Kurtis. is a 28-year-old minor league player. Curious!
Kubalik, Dominik. He is 6'+ but only 178lbs. he had a great start to his NHL career but has cooled significantly of late. He seems to be a defensive liability.
I can't like this deal either. I'm not a Holl fan, but I feel 2 million/per is the correct value for him. The problem is the coach keeps throwing Holl's 2million worth into a position that requires a 5 million player of value.

I did notice Preds' LHD was strong today. I hear your point but I was thinking more ahead say in a few years. Hypothetically, Dermott would play 6 spots behind those quality two 31-year-old players learning defence in a system of defence. Therefore, he will be positioned to move up when those legs start to slow (it's inevitable sadly).
I never figured this was a slam dunk. As a Leaf fan, I feel for Dermott because Sandin has much more to offer and Reilly likely isn't going anywhere.
Dermott can be much more in the right space.

I am not trying to argue with you but I respectfully disagree.
It's hard to believe anyone thinks so poorly of Tavares. He will finish his NHL career (6 years from now) as a point-a-game player. How can anyone overlook that? The problem isn't his contract because all teams can have 1 maybe 2 10+ million contracts but three is too much.
Next, didn't, Roberston just snipe top shelf on Demko, and you call that unproven. Last I checked Demko is a great goalie.
