Only way they move Jarry is if Markstrom or Saros are moved in a different trade. But then we are really pushing the limits there.

And if he does start in the AHL I don't think Poulin is the guy that gets slotted to play 3C, so I agree with you that he has the inside track on Poulin. I'd like to see them go out (either UFA or Trade) and get a proper 3rd line center to push Eller down, I'm not sure we have a young player in our system that can play 3C and be super successful. Maybe that is Ponomarev but who knows</div></div>
Eller would be a perfect 4C. I don't want to say just hand the 3C role to Ponomarev either, but with an older team, you have to start placing the youth in roles at some point, right? I'd rather not see them hand out big money and term to Monahan, Stephenson, Domi, Roslovic or Wennberg. Lindholm is the only C I would feel comfortable dishing out money and term to, but that's only if the Malkin to winger idea actually happens.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Penz87</b></div><div>I don't think Mikheyev would be a good addition. He has put up worse numbers than Smith for a little less money and still has two more years on the contract. I'd rather keep Smith at that point. I also think Ponomarev will probably start the year in the AHL. Other than that, I don't mind this line up.</div></div>
- I'm on the fence about Mikheyev. However, if he returns to some confidence and pots 15-20 goals on the third line, it would be a good upgrade to the bottom-six.
- Maybe because of that late season injury, Ponomarev could start in the AHL. I'm not sure what the plans are for 3C, but I think Ponomarev has the inside track on Poulin. It seems like he was close to getting into Carolina's lineup as a regular before an injury occurred there.

My guess is probably not. POJ would be at best their 4th LHD - Idk much about their farm system so he might even be lower, so he probably carries little value. And given Smiths cap hit I imagine he holds little value as well - they'd probably just rather spend that money in free agency. The only thing that could possibly make the Devils do that is because the UFA market for goalies is just absolutely horrendous - but I still think they'd probably go another route. If they're willing to part with 10OA for a goalie, maybe they go after Swayman/Ullmark or Saros? Idk. Stranger things have happened, but I'd be surprised if NJD take that offer

Jarry
#44
Smith / POJ
...for #10?
This is a terrible deal for the Devils.
100% better off just picking Catton, Eiserman or whomever else they like at #10.

Yeah most likely. Maybe like a 2nd and an NHL ready skater or something like that - I can see the Pens wanting someone who can help now in the return. The goalie market is horrendous so that does benefit the Pens - but as you touched on I think Jarry is just a tier below returning the 10th overall.

I'm probably one of the bigger Jarry defenders on here, but I think this is too much. Goalies historically don't have great value - and Jarry is neither elite at his position nor does he have an extremely team friendly contract.

Add in DeBrusk set to make $4M+ again, and the Bruins only have $8M (at best) to shore up any holes along with getting a top-6 center. That's not enough.
Ullmark is going to be traded. It makes too much sense.</div></div>
Swayman is not making $1M.
The reality of the situation is Boston can keep both goaltenders or they can trade to free up room to sign a player on a one year contract.
Trusting Brandon Bussi to be the backup vs trusting Lysell or Merkulov to be a top 9 player isn’t that big of a difference to me, While I’m sure Sweeney would trade Ullmark for the right price, I believe the “he must do it” is basically wishful thinking.
There is a deal between these two teams. It shouldn’t involve the 2024 first, but I’m not sure the 2025 first gets it done.

For FC I could see Chicago accepting. I think his value equals the cap relief they're providing Pit. And if Bedard can help pad Smith's stats, he could be a nice trade chip at next year's TDL.

They could trade one of the goalies, so they don't "lose" them in free agency.</div></div>
They have $20M, but they need to retain or replace DeBrusk, find a top 6 center and sign Jeremy Swayman to
a contract. The $20M is gonna disappear very quickly.

Retool Without Trading Smith
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Penz87</b></div><div>Personally, I’d want to stay away from Kahkonen but it could be a similar situation like we had with Ned. Where he surprises us a bit. As far as, Samsonov, I don’t mind that at all. But I feel like he wants to go somewhere to be the starter. While I think Jarry is the better goalie, I also think him and Jarry are very similar goalies when it comes to some of the inconsistent stretches. However, if we could get Samsonov on a relatively cheap deal 2-3 million for one year maybe? I would not be opposed to that at all.</div></div>
I definitely think you're right about Sammy probably wanting the opportunity to be the starter. Even if he went to Pittsburgh and won the job, it could be another Blues Husso vs. Binnington situation, where Husso was better but the Blues couldn't keep him with Binnington's contract. But I definitely think bringing in Sammy would be a good bet. With Dubas being the GM and how habit of always looking for the same guys (Bunting, Acciari, a couple prospects he acquired), it wouldn't shock me if he went out for Sammy.

You're right on Jones, but I think Blomqvist COULD be that guy. He's really good, he just has to make the jump to the NHL. Although, he might need another year down in the AHL.</div></div>
I'll probably get some hate for this take, but Ilya Samsonov could be a decent fit. He has shown all the skills to be a pretty good goalie, and even was last year when he registered one of the best slot save percentages. I think if he was able to get a bit of the pressure taken off of him by being the 2nd guy, he could rebound to being pretty good. I can't even begin to guess what his contract is gonna look like considering that the first and last half of this last season was polar opposite. He is arguably the most promising free agent goalie.
There is also Kaapo Kahkonen. Seems like there is still some potential there, and his stats looked really in NJ and San Jose (considering how bad the sharks were).

I've always been a big believer in Jarry, but it's impossible to say that without acknowledging his major consistency issues. I feel like it would be very risky to have Jarry be The Guy without an established and proven backup, or maybe even tandem capable, goalie there as well. It is unlikely either Blomqvist or Jones could be that in Pittsburgh.

I fully expect the Pens and Smith to part ways though. He clearly showed he didn't want to be here.

Yeah I feel like those are the best names to help the PP. I think Reinhart would do well on Crosby’s line so I don’t mind paying in that 11-12 million range for him. And he’s young enough. But you could probably get both Toffoli and Teravainen for around the same as you could get Reinhart so I wouldn’t mind going that way either cause you get more depth out of it.

Just an assumption though. Either way, you guys get another player to flip at the deadline for a decent price, ideally.</div></div>
Yeah. That's a possibility. I just assume if PIT wants to do something this summer they might want to clear the cap space sooner. But the TDL could also be an option.

I don't mind betting on Chris Dreidger, Martin Jones, or Ivan Prosvetov, around that price range but neither of those guys are guaranteed to beat Blomqvist for the backup spot IMO. Any other options probably would be signed at a large AAV that sending them to the AHL doesn't bury 100% of their contract.

Yeah. Something like that would probably be reasonable. I think it comes down to what is the cap space worth to the team moving the player, in these types of deals. Because a team like CHI can find value in them, but they also wouldn't target them otherwise. BUT maybe KD likes Smith and likes some of those things I mentioned earlier, like the experience, knowing what it takes to win, etc. So it is entirely possible that CHI could be willing to be the one paying the pick, but I tend to believe the great value in that trade goes to PIT getting the cap relief. I wouldn't mind Smith as another stop gap, though, and if there ends up being more to it and they want to keep him around or they can retain and flip him, even better. We'll see, though.

He's a leftie for starters. Beyond that the Ducks have plenty of middle six veteran depth already in Killorn, Vatrano and Strome. They need to keep the roster spot open for younger players from San Diego to make a bid at a roster spot. Or they need to go after a legit top 6 forward instead.
Taking Smith is more or less "running it back" from the past couple of seasons with Silfverberg. It wouldn't improve the roster in any way from that.
